isnt there liek $1 to check if its a install or update, etc ...

wolfy
kaos01: that's what the script does for non-systemd
kj: since you are rebuilding the package anyway, preserve the output instead of redirecting to /dev/null

Jeff_S
carlgeorge: hi, I hear you may know about IUS? :) I'm curious why there are seemingly different repos for CentOS vs. RHEL
carlgeorge
come join us over in #iuscommunity
Jeff_S
carlgeorge: sure, but if it's a quick answer I think some others here may be interested (I brought it up in -social but you're not in there)
carlgeorge
yeah I can make it short i guess
Jeff_S
no pressure ;)

CentOS and RHEL are not always in sync library wise. The delay has been almost non-existent since the RH sponsership, but in the past things have lagged significantly at times.
RHEL 6 was the obvious one
another more subtle problem was libjpeg-turbo
Jeff_S
carlgeorge: ok, that's what TrevorH mentioned he thought was the case (timing of point releases)
carlgeorge: what's up with libjpeg-turbo?
carlgeorge
PHP needed it for a new version with CVE fixes, but at the time it was only in RHEL and not CentOS. IUS didn't want to delay CVE fixes for RHEL users just because the packages wouldn't install on CentOS.
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/6.4_Technical_Notes/RHEA-2013-0422.html
it was a new package in 6.4. libjpeg was provided by something else pre-6.4
Jeff_S
carlgeorge: thanks for the info
carlgeorge
I don't recall the exact details, I wasn't involved with the project at the time.
Jeff_S
with CentOS CR I wonder if it's still worthwhile to separate the two
carlgeorge
For now we are keeping the builds separate, but we may re-evaluate that in the future.
Jeff_S
but even with CR there's going to be some divergence of people w/o CR... you can't win

im setting up a new home sever with software raid to give me some random services. im wondering how i should lay out the partitions. since important stuff can be scattered around i was debating putting root into the software raid and having separate boot, swap and tmp partitions on a old drive
any comments?
DiscordianUK
martman : if that's what you want do it
swap shouldn't be on RAID
It degrades performance
janelleb
Hi all, I need to install tmux on CentOS 7, but I'm getting `No package tmux available.`
Evolution
janelleb: tmux is in the base centos repositories.
janelleb: you've likely got your repositories misconfigured or have something else going sideways on you
http://mirror.centos.org/centos-7/7/os/x86_64/Packages/tmux-1.8-4.el7.x86_64.rpm
it's right in the mirrors.
are you certain you're working with centos 7?
for 6 it's not in the base rpeos, but is in epel.
emk
Evolution: oh you're right I'm on 6.6 Santiago
janelleb
... er well I am on CentOS7
Evolution: how do I check for misconfigured repos?
Evolution
janelleb: pastebin your yum command and the output so we can see it

got a simple question. when I run ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/* I don't see sdb
but I do see it with fdisk -l
salamanderrake
I am having problems with my centos server, I am trying to open/add port 7777 and I get this, https://gist.github.com/salamanderrake/e042ae2dd92247231bc0
pj
janelleb: can you pastebin the contents of the file: /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo ?
salamanderrake
never mind, since selinux isn't even running.

OneM_Industries
Hey, what would I install to stress test a server?
pj
stress
OneM_Industries
Ah ha, thank you!
pj
yw
OneM_Industries
So, how would I stop it if the CPU started having issues?
This CPU is suspected to be on it's last legs.
pj
sorry, doesn't appear to be in el7, but yum search stress should give some clues
OneM_Industries
Found it.
I am actually running centos 6.6.
pj
oh, ok
OneM_Industries
Really, really old hardware.
pj
anyways, read the docs that come with it.
OneM_Industries
Uh oh.
Um..
stress -c 5
That look good?
And how do I stop it?
pj
tbh, I don't know, I would have to read the docs to tell you.
if it's running in the fg you can probably stop it with Ctrl-C like most programs.
OneM_Industries
Woah.
Up 5C almost instantly.
Whoo! Up to 61C!
How long do you recommend to keep this running?
pj
as long as you want. You're the one running it, you decide.
OneM_Industries
Ok, thank you.
I am going to go until a) Magic smoke b) 65C c) I deem it good enough to live.
pj
hehehe

Dance for the BOFH, dance! Just like Firefox and 2GB total of RAM with no swap!

Abhijit
I am connected to Internet I am on IRC. But KDE gives Network error 4 while attempting to download new mouse cursor and desktop themes.
how can I upgrade to latest "stable" kde?
on c7
FelixFire619
is centos made just to do hosting?
servers*
sartan
yes, only.
Abhijit
??
(Action) was just playing games on it doing office work and doing web dev work too
on c7
FelixFire619
hmmm
so you all would say centos is the best for hosting servers,
are there any cent os solutions for virtualization + www administration of said virtualization?
Abhijit
if you are looking for commercial solutions why not just go to RedHat?
FelixFire619
I'm not looking for commercial,
im working on a non-profit, Opensource project,
currently setting up the infastructor
Abhijit
ok
hifi
best means you can actually compare distributions somehow
