orc_orc
daMaestro: what function are you seeking?
daMaestro
orc_orc, i'm looking to run my own dictionary server
orc_orc
daMaestro: and you think centos provides it why?
daMaestro
orc_orc, because i made an incorrect assumption that because dictd is in fedora 'core' it would have been in centos
orc_orc
is this #fedora?
daMaestro
no, and thus i asked if centos has a dictd package
orc_orc
minute 12, http://www.veracast.com/webcasts/twp/tech07/08207234.cfm -- no rhel5 before mid March
17:06 daMaestro> where is dictd for centos?
the if is invisible, I guess
cemc
orc_orc: you _seem_ arrogant a little bit ;)
(Action) ducks
daMaestro
(Action) wanders off to find a rpm from a third party or to rebuild for centos; sorry for an off /topic question

orc_orc
I have been factuan and consistent with channel policy -- I do not suffer fools
catula
factual
cemc
true.
but not everybody is a 'techie', one should help them too, without getting them frustrated and sending them back to windows ;) (this is not #windows nor #centos-social, i know. no more offtopic, i promise)
orc_orc
cemc: tis is not linux intro, and has never billed itself as such -- plenty of venues for that
cemc
also true. maybe should mention that in topic ;)
orc_orc
cemc: http://www.centos.org/irc/ and google: site: centos.org irc floorshow
cemc
"oops i did it again"
(Action) shuts up now
Delemas: can i ask in private?
Delemas
I'm just about to leave but ok
cemc
Delemas: sent msg in private, you dont see it? :)
orc_orc
cemc: freenode does not forward /msg from non-registered 'nics
cemc

cemc: reiserfs has *never* been production in RH products that I'm aware of.
cemc
that's why i was wondering, is it not production material, or why. i never used it before, and i was gonna try it on centos, that's when i saw that it's not included
thx guys for the help. bye
ModocNet
centos cant see my SATA drive to install on - FC4 can't either - however XP Home can!!!! I am starting to get VERY upset and ready to use this brand new MB as a door stop...any ideas?
Jesse--
is it the banning hour?
sharpie
ModocNet, you need to drivers for your chipset
if there arent any sata drivers for linux from the board maker, then you now know how to shop for hardware
ModocNet
yeah - i was afraid of that - no floppy!!! damn...Gigabyte screwed the pooch on this MB
Gigabyte GA-M61VME-S2
sharpie
if you have the driver CD there may be a linux directory with a README or something
ModocNet
I'll try an IDE HD before I use it for rifle practice
yeah I am opening the CD now
i was spoiled with my MSI MBs Cent and the others say all the SATA drives with no problems
peerce
it depends on the CHIPSET far more than the motherboard maker.
that board is a nForce 400 ? try here -> http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.21.html
note they have binary drivers for -specific- kernel versions. careful you do NOT update the kernel from the base 4.4 (or whatever) release. CentOS 4.4 is based on and fully compatible with RHEL4 u4.
after installing 4.4, I'd put a Exclude=kernel into the yum.conf file
sharpie
yeah we have a raid card... cant update the kernel

ModocNet
its loading on a IDE w/o any problems...had a spare 80g laying around
thanks for the help though
adamhorden
hi all, on a server I manage I removed yum and wget by mistake and a few other packages. Any ideas how I can install them from rpm if I don't have wget to download the rpms?
range
rpm http://...
rpm -i even.
weird_guy
or scp the packages
adamhorden
to install yum again do I need the src rpm? http://mirror.inetc.co.uk/centos/4.4/os/SRPMS/yum-2.4.3-1.c4.src.rpm?
weird_guy
nope.. you need the binary rpm... go up one dir and go to the i386 directory
that is.. if your machine is i386
adamhorden
rpm -i just returns: error: skipping http://mirror.inetc.co.uk/centos/4.4/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/yum-2.4.3-1.c4.noarch.rpm - transfer failed - Unknown or unexpected error
weird_guy
ok.. then download the rpm to your machine and then send it ot the server using scp
adamhorden
never used scp?
weird_guy
if you are on linux, it's simple... go to the directory where you saved the rpm and: "scp yum-2.4.3-1.c4.noarch.rpm username@myserver.somedomain.com:~/ " will transfer the rpm to the home dir of the user in your server
if you are in windows, you need a client that supports it...
adamhorden
im on linux
i get connection refused
k-y
or you can leave off the ~/ and it will still hit the home dir
weird_guy
ok. can you ssh to the server?
adamhorden
yup
in a ssh session with the server at the moment
weird_guy
do you use other port besides 22 to connect to the server over ssh?
adamhorden
nope just the standard port
weird_guy
ok.. this is weird.. should had worked fine
adamhorden
no where it asks for a password?
the user i am using for ssh has a password assigned for it as we dont use keys
weird_guy
it's just like ssh on linux... it'll first try to negotiate the crypto then it will ask the password
adamhorden
well scp is not asking for a password?
weird_guy
if you got connection refused, it never even go to the part where ssh tries to negotiate the session
recheck the syntax of the command... and also try "sftp username@server_ip_or_hostname" ...
both work over ssh, so if you can reach it over ssh, both should work (provided the sftp subsystem is enabled, but in centos that is on by default)
adamhorden: something else came to me.. check if you have the command "curl"
adamhorden
I think when I removed openssl to upgrade it one of the dependencies it removed was ssh as apart from my current session I cannot connect at all.
not on the centos system
weird_guy
:\
adamhorden
looks like this might be a visit to the server location
weird_guy
no other machine on the network, so you could share a directory over nfs?
adamhorden
its a windows network so might be able to use samba if that was not removed as well
are the rpms cached anywhere on the system?
weird_guy
the ones downloaded to upgrade, could be on /var/cache/yum
joobie
Hey Guys.. Is it possible to use wget to get each file on a website that just shows a file-listing? There is no .html page, it's just doing a file-listing and iw ant to get all the files in the listing, recusively
weird_guy
joobie: check the man page for the -m and -np options of wget
adamhorden
i got webmin running so I got some way into the system
nope the firewall has that blocked
gah looks like a trip to the location
weird_guy
ouch.. guess you have somewhere to visit then
adamhorden
well not at this hour
ah i got access to the router remotely so I got webmin up. At least its some way into the system.
and that has an upload and download util
how can i check what dns servers my centos box is using?
daMaestro
cat /etc/resolv.conf
Evolution
adamhorden: cat /etc/resolv.conf
daMaestro: dammit... 1 second!
daMaestro
yessss
Evolution, i just made sure to ping -f Evolution
Evolution
(Action) admits defeat and wanders off
adamhorden
do I just add nameserver addy if I want to add a name server?
daMaestro
Evolution, mind a /msg?
Evolution
daMaestro: you're always welcome to /msg
adamhorden: yep, that's basically how it works
adamhorden
cheers
Evolution
but more than 2 doesn't usually gain you anything
adamhorden
how do I install ssh is it just yum install openssh?
Evolution
pretty much. it should be on your system already thought
s/thought/though/
adamhorden
was I removed it by accident earlier
Evolution
ah
adamhorden
sh*t happens I was not concentrating when updating a package
right well how do I enable it at boot / start it
Evolution
oh, that's a different package. you're wanting the server.
yum install openssh-server
then chkconfig sshd on
adamhorden
cheers? what is the openssh package?
sorry cheers without the ?
peerce
openssh is the client command
Rinnert1
hi
peerce ssh is the client command
sharpie
5Krunner
Evolution
Rinnert1: incorrect.
sharpie
sorry, wrong window
Rinnert1
wrong window
peerce
I meant, the openssh PACKAGE contains the ssh command line client
Evolution
and even at that, it's incorrect :-P
it's openssh-clients
I was incorrect as well the first time
peerce
ok, openssh has /etc/ssh/moduli, /usr/bin/ssh-keygen, /usr/libexec/openssh/ssh-keysign, and /usr/share/doc/openssh-*/* ... and man pages for keygen and keysing.
:-/
Evolution
yeah. I thought it would be in openssh too. I blame it squarely on mmcgrath
Rinnert1
hmn does exim work good on CentOS
adamhorden
cheers thanks for the info
Evolution
clearly he's moved on from splitting up nagios packages to splitting up openssh packages.
Rinnert1
Evolution what mailprogram do you use >?
Evolution
Rinnert1: yes.
Rinnert1: for what? MTA or MUA?
sharpie
MDA
Rinnert1
uuh mail transfer adapter ?
MUA or DAO ?
Evolution
postfix + dovecot at home...
exchange at work...
Rinnert1
oki
sharpie
Evolution, and sendmail for fun ?
Evolution
sharpie: no, I'm not into BDSM
sharpie
Evolution, it's not that bad once you get used to it
Rinnert1
Evolution is dovecot a tough thing to configure ? how many docs did you read ?
Evolution
wait, I was supposed to read the docs?
Rinnert1
aha ! hehahaha
Evolution sendmail is difficult, still dont know how it works
