hi
joobie
Hi Guys.. I'm in the market for a Laser printer that can also be used as a scanner. It's for a small sized office, but I'm after a decent printer that is not too expensive but considered good in the industry as a standard. Can anyone suggest a model or two for me? Thanks
Pikshik
hi, ppl
Evolution
joobie: most things by hp
joobie
Evolution, got a decent model to recommend? there's so many to choose from.. but most of the HP stand-alone lasers are slow, 8ppm :/
.. unless you start paying 1000$ and up
Daemoen
hey guys, is there a way to slipstream all of the updates into my older centos4.3 dvd iso image?
as well as add the packages that i generally install to it as well :)
evil_steve
Daemoen: why not download 4.4 and use a kickstart file?
Daemoen
lets see... i have a 384k downstream
i already have all of the update files on the system, as well as the files that i add to the install so it would be much easier to just burn a new dvd with what i have
if i had a better isp i would probably dl the newer iso anyway, as i like trying to keep my set up to date, but for now, i dont have that option
Evolution
Daemoen: no, not into the dvd, however you could extract the 4.3 dvd image to a directory, and rsync in the updates

Daemoen
well, i knew i would have to extract the image, but how do you set all of the update info?
do we have any guides out there for doing that (i was unable to find any of the information for it)
Evolution
just rsync the current stuff ontop of the extracted directory.
then you could try to run the script in the build dir on the mirrors to create an updated dvd.
not sure that would work though
Daemoen
(Action) ponders
Evolution: any reliable sources for information on usage and administration of SEL policies?
(other than the SEL site.... )
Evolution: you still havent come up with a suggestion for a better forum than phpbb :-D
chmac
G'day. I'm trying to build Avahi for CentOS 4.4 and I'm getting the error "No package 'glib-2.0' found" but according to `rpm -qa` I have glib2 2.4.7-1 installed
ed_mann
chmac: do you have the glib devel package installed?
chmac
ed_mann: Excellent call, that's what I'm missing, DOH!
ed_mann
cool
chmac
Avahi and nss-mdns make a superb combination, you can literally call your machines by name.local and it works, genius
Daemoen
you can do that by setting information in the /etc/hosts file...
chmac
Daemoen: Yeah, but my IPs change, because I have multiple laptops and virtual machines which travel to different networks
So I plug them in, and then let avahi do the rest, it discovers all the machines, sets up all the host names
Daemoen
(Action) nods
(Action) sits and waits for z00dax to get to comp to pester him
z00dax: when you return, give me a nudge please, as I am having some issues with yum and validating dependencies.
chmac
Darn, I've installed glib2-devel and I have the same problem again
CentOS installs most things in /usr/ right? As opposed to /usr/local/
ed_mann
chmac: same error?
chmac
ed_mann: Exactly the same... :(
ed_mann: http://pastebin.ca/340844
ed_mann
hold on i am trying something.
ok some packages you may need to have installed.
i will paste the link.
chmac
Don't suppose anyone knows of an Avahi RPM for CentOS 4.4? I've tried rpmfind and so on, but no luck...
ed_mann
http://rafb.net/p/bbmm5j97.html
what version of avahi are you trying to install?
Chrismc
Hi, I just installed centos on an new hp box and I am getting ata1:command x timeout over and over again... Any suggestions?
Evolution
Daemoen: smf is better than phpbb I feel.
chmac
ed_mann: v 0.6.16

ed_mann
chmac: ok.
Evolution
chmac: why not just set up dynamic dns with bind?
chmac
Evolution: I can't always rely on having internet access, so I need some way of "discovering" other machines on the network
ed_mann: Where did you get that list? Think the problem is I'm missing dbus-glib-devel...
ed_mann
from a rpm file.
Evolution
chmac: right. I meant setting up a local zone which would not require intarweb access.
chmac
ed_mann: An RPM for Fedora?
Evolution
chmac: assuming you're talkign about a local 192.168 or 10. network
or a 172.16.. or... etc
ed_mann
ya i took the fedora srpm and put it on my machine. then tried to build it.
that is where i got the list.
chmac
Evolution: That might work, I could set up a local bind and enter a bunch of CNAME records, but that might not work...
Evolution
chmac: dynamic dns will set hostnames up for you. you just set the name of the machine
on the machine itself
chmac
Evolution: The IPs of the machines will 99.9% of the time be private (192.168 / 10. etc)
Evolution
using dhcpd and bind, the name the machine identifies itself with to the dhcp server is the name entered into dns.
chmac
ed_mann: I don't actually need glib for the Avahi daemon, I've used --disable-glib, should solve the problem...
Evolution
so as long as you have a hostname set in /etc/sysconfig/network your network will always update to match
your call though. I'm just offering up one solution
Daemoen
(Action) knows better than to pester Evolution with the dependency issue hes having :-D
chmac
Evolution: Ok, so I could set aliases to the machine's IP. How would I set aliases to another machine's IP, dev.local ?
Evolution
(Action) beats Daemoen with java
Daemoen
(Action) snickers and ducks
hey, i found a bug, thats a good thing... because it gets fixed now :-D
Evolution
chmac: why would you need an alias?
chmac: I don't follow what you're looking to do.
chmac
Evolution: I have two laptops, one here.local and one dev.local, I want to host a bunch of sites on dev.local, so I need to alias www.somesite.com to dev.local somehow
I can't rely on having internet access, or knowing what the IP of the other laptop is, but through avahi (if I ever get it built) and nss-mdns I know it's at dev.local
Evolution
ah. I see what you're doing now.
buy a mac and set up zeroconf :-P
chmac
lol
Evolution
macos will just do it for you
Daemoen
(Action) ponders...
Evolution
while you're at it, buy me a shiny new macbook pro
chmac
Evolution: I don't think it'll allow aliases of the other machine though will it?
Daemoen
is there any machine that never changes?
chmac
Daemoen: Nope, there are more than just two, but they're all VMWare virtual machines on two laptops
and the vmware machines are bridged, onto the hosts's wireless / lan card...
Daemoen
ahh. so not even one single machine stays the same, that hurts
lol
chmac
lol
Daemoen
you dont like doing things the easy way, do you :p
chmac
It works ok with avahi and nss-mdns, I have it running between the two fedora laptops
Daemoen
have you searched the forums for avahi?
chmac
It's just the CentOS vm that I can't install avahi on, and then I need to alias dev.local somehow...
Daemoen: Yeah, not much there
Daemoen
nods
(Action) sits and waits for z00dax
he seems to be afk alot lately, lol
chmac
Stupid question, but why does | grep "--disable" not work, anyone know what the syntax is?
Aha, grep -e...
Chrismc
Does anyone know where to start troubleshooting ata1: command x timeout errors. I googled it and can't seem to find any answers.
Evolution
Chrismc: what ata devices are you using?
Chrismc
Do you mean brand?
Evolution
no, are you using 2 ide hard drives?
Chrismc
no only 1 ide hard drive.
Evolution
regular old ata, or an ide cdrom + hard drive on the same chain
Chrismc
let me crack the case and take a look... wait one...
Evolution
it would seem like you've either got a drive going bad, a poorly supported controller, or you've got 2 devices marked as master/slave on the same chain
or possibly a master device on the standard slave location (some drives are notoriously picky about that)
or your drive is jumpered to cable select, and is the only drive on the chain, but is cabled as slave.. etc.
(Action) hates ide and sings the sweet praises of sata
Chrismc
OK, the hd is on cable by itself. The cdrom is on a nother cable
Evolution
time to check the jumpering or cabling of the drive then
joobie
hi guys.. i just got a usb wifi device and need a hand with setup.. i can see it in /proc/bus/usb/devices but i dont think a driver is loaded.. can someone help me with this? i dont often use usb so not sure what to do next... it is a linksys wusb54g
ed_mann
chmac: what is your configure command look like?
Evolution
joobie: sell it and get a real card.
chmac
ed_mann: Latest is ./configure --disable-glib --disable-qt3 --disable-qt4 --disable-gtk --disable-python --disable-python-dbus --disable-mono --disable-pygtk --disable-monodoc --disable-dbus
Chrismc
How can I test my hd to see if it is going bad?
chmac
Which brings me back to the error I was at the other day "checking for XML_ParserCreate in -lexpat... no \n configure: error: *** libexpat not found ***"
joobie
Evolution, I just bought this one for the chipset :P It works well with aircrack
ed_mann
well i was able to do the configure.
Evolution
Chrismc: if it's a newer machine/drive it should be smart capable. you can use smartctl
chmac
joobie: Thanks for the reminder, I must install that! I'm doing a lot of travelling and finding lots of encrypted networks... :)
joobie: Off topic, but have you seen NSTX?
Chrismc
Sorry, what is smartctl?
joobie
chmac, no I haven't.. what is that?
Evolution
Chrismc: newer hard drives use 'SMART' to determine if they're going bad and report this to the operating system. smartctl is a commandline check you can run to manually test the drive
Chrismc: you should also check the cabling of the drive and see how it's jumpered.
chmac
It's a way of routing IP traffic via a DNS server, so if you have a paid for wifi point, but they allow DNS queries (as most of them seem to) then you can bypass the payment... :)
joobie
Chrismc, you can also read that diagnostic info from the drive with smartctl..
Evolution
(and verify one of the wires in the ide cable isn't bent/broken
(Action) wanders off
joobie
ie. if you want to know many hours that drive has been powered on for.. or how many powercycles it's been through, generally smart shows that
Chrismc
I checked the cable, it is plugged in to sata1 and the drive has no jumpers (segate)
joobie
I haven't chmac
but i will definitely look into it
chmac
http://thomer.com/howtos/nstx.html and http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/nstx/
joobie
ta
have u tried it chmac?
chmac
joobie: Not yet
joobie
it sounds like it would be slower
but still, doable
(without looking into the urls you posted)
i will read after i get this damn usb installed:P
chmac
At last, config ran eventually, after disabling enough options, now it's making... :)
Chrismc
Evolution: smartctl is replying: SATA disk access via libata are not currently supported...
blargman
anyone know how i might go about enabling or installing php zlib extension on centos 4.4
:s
chmac
blargman: Have you checked if it's available in yum? `yum list php*`
Evolution
Chrismc: remember the part where I asked you if it was sata or IDE?
Chrismc
Yes 9.9
Evolution
smart seems to think it's sata.
is it sata or is it ide?
