xp_prg
hi all, I try yum install ssh and it says: Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
not using ftp, http[s], or file for repos, skipping - Null is not a valid release or hasnt been released yet
Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: update
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: update
any idea how to fix that?
peerce
sounds like your /etc/yum* stuff is hosed
donavan
xp_prg: what is the output of uname -a on that box ?
Arrfab
(Action) was ready to ask the same thing ...
xp_prg
um... actually this is a vserver issue, yum works, just not doing it right
Evolution
xp_prg: you need to contact your VPS provider, as they've screwed with some of the core files
and you appear to be missing the centos-release package, which controls the value of 'Null' that you're getting
xp_prg
anyone know the package for which?
Evolution
which
xp_prg
ok sorry yup your right
anyone know the package for ncftpget?

Arrfab
(Action) points xp_prg to yum doc
xp_prg
I did a yum search ncftpget but nothing came up :(
donavan
see your providor
provider*
k-y
ncftpget is a part of the ncftp package
it's not standalone afaik
xp_prg
k-y yum install ncftp did not work for me
k-y
why use ftp at all
Evolution
ncftp is not part of centos.
k-y
why not scp
bish0p
lftp
Evolution
but it is in 3rd party repositories.
you should really use lftp as bish0p says
xp_prg
just getting everything cpan needs
peerce
I use wget most frequently, and scp for most anything else
Evolution
xp_prg: you REALLY don't want to use cpan
xp_prg
have to for perl jifty
Evolution
no, you don't.
xp_prg
what download it raw?
Evolution
no
use rpm repositories
like rpmforge and c.k.o
xp_prg
there is an rpm for jifty?
Evolution
xp_prg: there's much documentation and mailing list traffic on how cpan will horribly screw over your box
it does not work with package management at all.
xp_prg
ok good to know

Evolution
since you use an rpm based system, it is best that you work within rpm as much as possible
xp_prg
but if a package doesn't exist, cpan is the only way to go I think
Evolution
you think wrong
xp_prg
well how else would I do it then?
bish0p
well, see if there is a perl-PKGNAME rpm available
best to do it that way and then fall back to CPAN
(Action) has to use CPAN for some stuff
but mostly i try to stick w/ the stuff in base + rpmforge
Evolution
cpan-flute and cpan2rpm
bish0p
interesting, didn't know about cpan-flute
xp_prg: http://www.fozzilinymoo.org/Fozzolog/alone?id=119
smooge
cpan-flute I think is the oldest of the tools
I found that cpanspec was very good these days
cmang
Does anyone know if CentOS provides a kernel (rpm) that uses the Complete Fair Queuing i/o scheduler? (along with the tools to manage i/o scheduling, like ionice)
sounds like exactly what I need to un-suckify my responsiveness under heavy i/o. :/
Evolution
cmang: by default centos uses CFQ
see -> http://www.redhat.com/magazine/008jun05/features/schedulers/
it applies to centos4 also.
cmang
Evolution: oh, sweet. thank you for that link
Daemoen
hey guys, anyone here running the 1.5 series JDK?
if so, how long did it take for it to install, and what type of hardware
Evolution
yep
about 30 seconds (after download) and on x86 hardware.
Daemoen
... neither mode text or graphic install seems to be going anywhere on my system
asks where to install as normal, tell it /opt/SDK and then it just seems to sit still....
not sure if its actually installing anything right now or not. I see the processes on top, but if i ls /opt/SDK nothing is being added to it.
Evolution
what the crap are you doing?
you're talking the sun java jdk right?
you get the rpm from java.sun.com. then you install the jpackage sun-java compat package for the coresponding version.
Daemoen
java_ee_sdk-5_02-linux.bin
(Action) nods
Evolution
that's the wrong thing.
seriously. you're getting the wrong package.
Daemoen
(Action) ponders
Evolution
EE is the enterprise jaba stuff. you don't want that unless you're doing all sorts of commercial screwball stuff.
Daemoen
right. according to tummy.com its required for tomcat5
Evolution
like hell it is.
Daemoen
happen to know of a working guide to getting tomcat5 running on cent4.4?
Evolution
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp
that's the kit you need.
Daemoen: follow the jpackage.org instructions. the #jpackage folks are a big help
and there's a workable tomcat how-to in the mailing list logs
http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2005-October/055029.html
granted it's a bit dated, but it should still be mostly functional
or you can use the jpackage instructions and use their 1.6 series for all but the really non-free crap
that you'll have to build on your own.
but they tell you how.
Daemoen
why is it that they consider it non free, its generally available under a license
gpl is a license as well, so i really dont understand why its considered non free (or is it because the source itself is not readily avail?)
tux
I've had a few times now that on different systems the (default) bottom panel disappears. I've Googled, and running "gnome-panel&" as root seems to (temporary) fix the problem sometimes. Can anyone tell me what is actually going wrong, and how to fix this?
the "different systems" all run the same centos 4.4 (with current updates)
Evolution
Daemoen: that and distribution requirements, other binding clauses, etc.
mostly there's a whole heap of restrictions on java and related software.
that's slowly changing, but still accurate
Daemoen
(Action) nods
was just curious
th3man
what's the best way to download kernel sources?
or to download the current kernel source for my distribution?
jbt
via yum?
th3man
jbt: yeah i'm using an older kernel release
jbt: hmmm..let me see if i can pull out an older release
Daemoen
yum list kernel*
yum install kernel-package
jbt
so anyone with NIS home automount experience prolling here?
Daemoen
Evolution: whats youre preferred java ide? eclipse, netbeans?
anel
Evolution: are you a java programmer now?
peerce
I really should start programming again, and if I did, java would be the logical language.
Evolution
Daemoen: I detest java
th3man: http://wiki.centos.org/I_need_the_Kernel_Source
since you're back now and all.
miah
meh
th3man
when compiling glib where should we normally compile it to so that the devel packages are properly in place?
anel
y would u be doing that?
Daemoen
why not use yum to install both?
miah
some people like to break their systems by recomiping libraries and installing them over or where the system libs belong
Daemoen
or some people like being dumb and working on a production server with 1 hour of sleep in 57 hours :-D
(Action) whistles an innocent tune
giz--
hi
i'm installing centos 4.4 on a vmware server, installation starts, but does not find the emulated dvd :s
_brendan
does vmware see any other guest OS dvd drives? if not check out #vmware
misc--
you could always create an iso and map it to a cdrom in vmware
giz--
_brendan, i can install windows 2003 without any pb..., and i've map the iso too, do not works (drive is not found ? :o)
btw i'm starting a ftp install
_brendan
giz--, unfortunately im somewhat of a vm noob. please ask in #vmware
giz--
ok :)
malv
will it be possible to upgrade from rhel 4 to rhel 5 ?
z00_del
I am sure your red hat sales rep will be glad to help.
donavan
(Action) slaps z00_del around
z00_delhi
hey look, its a don!
donavan
so it is
z00_delhi
Does it bite?
donavan
okay perv, that is enough
z00_delhi
:)
donavan
when you due home z00_delhi ?
z00_delhi
Either today night or tomorrow afternoon. Wait listed for today.
donavan
ahh, yeah you need to get home and get back to work
z00_delhi
Am still off from work for a few days
joe4444
is it possible to highlight text in vi to copy/paste?
donavan
I wasn't talking about your paying job
joe4444
the only docs i can find explain how to copy multiple lines or a single word, but i want to copy 5 words
z00_delhi
Joe quite sure it is
joe4444
know how?
z00_delhi
Just yank five words them
joe4444
5yw
?
z00_delhi
vim_tutor does
joe4444
that's better, but it's not ideal for code with all the ( : # etc.
there's no way to highlight? maybe this one is a stripped down version, but i know i've used a vi that could highlight to make it obvious what you're copying
z00_delhi
Gedit then?
