yaroman_
i need some help here... i need to scan all open ports on a local server
how can i do this
i loged in as a root
what comand should i use to see all open ports
_bast
locally gives skewed results if you're firewalled me thinks
in any case nmap should do, toolwise
btw that isnt really a centos related q, innit?
yaroman_
what command
_bast
"man nmap"
yaroman_
common
No manual entry for nmap
common dude
_bast
then install it
Arrfab
yaroman_ : this is not centos related as _bast told you ...

_bast
btw, anyone from nasa.gov or karan.org here coincidentally?
yaroman_
bast do u know to scan it yes or no
Arrfab
(Action) wonders what nasa.gov and karan.org have in common ....
(Action) points yaroman_ to some docs ....
_bast
heh, no, just an email thread
spose I'll check dev
crshman
hello all, when i do an "mv" command i get the error: "Bus Error"
any ideas?
Arrfab
(Action) wonders why the hell mv send data by bus except if remote filesystem is really far away ...
crshman : can you add more details ?
crshman
i dunno lol...it's just that....i try this: "mv -v backups/ mondo_backups/" and i get this: "Bus error" nothing in messages or anything
peerce
offhand, I'd boot up a rescue disc, and do a fsck of all your file systems
crshman
damnit....it's a remote box...no other ideas? that would be a PITA lol...
Ubuh-Huntuh
hi! I'm thinking of installing CentOS on my webhosting server. Can anyone tell me if it will give me free updates or I will have to buy a subscription to get updates?
range
The first one. See <http://www.centos.org/>
Ubuh-Huntuh
the first one?
range
Well, you talked about two possibilities.
Ubuh-Huntuh
oh ty.
range
So yes, no money requires, but donations are happily accepted.

<Dr. Nick>Hi Everybody!</Dr. Nick>
Quick question: Any obvious reasons why swapping to a centosplus kernel would cause the system to give error 6 ext3 mount troubles?
I went from a stock x86_64 kernel to the cent+ and it fails to boot from the new one
lancelan
digix, go back to the old one ???

digix
yes, the original kernel works fine, its just the new centos+ one that gives the error 6 mounting ext3
i need to use the centos+, however, as i need reiserfs support
and ive had very little luck recompiling the original or compiling a new one
lancelan
I cant imagine any reason , except for some incompatibility with the drivers loaded
digix
haha, i just remembered... ok, different situation... how do i add my areca drivers to the new kernel?
it should load just fine as a module like it currently does, right?
lancelan
maybe ...
devhen_
so im running my websites on mysql 4.1, would u guys recommend upgrading to mysql 5?
so_
devhen_, ask the #mysql guys :)
lancelan
devhen_, only if you need features that arent in 4.1 ...
devhen_
thx ;)
so_
digix, did the initrd build correctly?
Number5Plus

nirz

Number5Plus
cual es el canal de centos en español
lancelan
Number5Plus, no
Number5Plus
ok
lancelan
there will be a spanish mailing list soon
Number5Plus
ok
lancelan
we can have a spanish channel if there are people to live in it :)
iam8up|lpy
can you install centos from the live cd?
like you are with *buntu, i mean
alleycat
iam8up|lpy: no
iam8up|lpy
ok, thakns
alleycat
use the server cd for that
iam8up|lpy
uhhh ok
does the DVD have the workstation and server installations?
alleycat
yes
it includes all packages, AFAIK
iam8up|lpy
awesome, thanks for the responses =)
all of the packages in the world?! neat!!!
alleycat
iam8up|lpy: yes, plus all freeware from the windows world
iam8up|lpy
ehh...i don't care too much about that
i'll remove that stuff from the disk myself, cut it down on a few kilobytes (maybe even a few megs!)
yay, i'm finally one of those kool seeds for something
just got myself 20megs =)

hello

bernardl
you missed him by 3 mins
redear_
can i just upgrade the python in my CentOS 4.4 installation?
i want to use turbogears and being advised to take python to 2.4
then i read online an upgrade will break yum
soooo
bernardl
redear_: you can have multiple versions of python installed
redear_
bernardl: yep that's what i did
downloaded the tgz of python 2.4.3
and built it
i would do it with rpm if it could handle that sort of multi-version thingy
but i am a rpm noob
alleycat
redear_: theoretically you could build a relocatable python-2.4 rpm
and install it in parallel
or just a package with a different install path
redear_
oh cool
can you guys fix yum?
it's a python app that breaks when you upgrade python 2.3 to 2.4 or more
so if you can't fix it, can you tell those python people to get some semblance of act together
so it's okay for me to upgrade it?
i keep thinking python 2.4 is just a super-set of 2.3
so why would it break things
is yum coded to some sort of bug in python 2.3 that's fixed in 2.4?
alleycat
it's not 100% compatible, AFAIK
but I am not sure
peerce
yeah, you could install python2.4 into /usr/lib/python2.4, and have the executable called python2.4, and not conflict with the default of python2.3
Arrfab
Morning ...
devhen
when will centos 5 be available?
pony
devhen: CentOS 5 shall be released when it is ready; most likely within 2-3 weeks of the upstream vendor's final public release. Beta news: http://www.karan.org/blog/index.php/2007/01/03/centos_5_first_install
devhen
thanks pony
peerce
heh. i never noticed that the 4.4 install had splash panels about the repositories during the installation :D
Arrfab
peerce : you should at least read these panels once ... just to be sure that no good information is missing you ... ;)
peerce
i've read most of the wiki
oh yuck. i forgot i was installing serverCD and tried to adjust the packages, it didn't complain, but then aways into the install, it couldn't find someething, and bi**hed. I'm remote installing with a virtual CD, which it couldn't eject, so it was STUCK
