Evolution : true, but then begins the real work : troubleshooting why the hell an app doesn't build correctly as a simple user ....
Zand3r
lol - And I thought I was over the difficult bit
/usr/bin/cc is needed
Dyson
err...
/usr/bin/cc is more or less standard if a c-compiler is installed
Evolution
Zand3r: you haven't even gotten close to the tough portion yet.
Dyson
hmm... where are these centos developers i should get in touch with? :)
Evolution
I would very much recommend reading the rpm.org docs, and the fedora build guides.
Dyson: depends. why do you think you need to get in touch with them? :-P
Dyson
Evolution: Karan's blog tells me to ;)
s/to/so/
Zand3r
is there a wy to use "yum install" to get a typical "group" of development tools installed or do I need to install one at a time?
Dyson
Zand3r: yum grouplist and yum groupinstall
Zand3r: it is described in the manpage quite well :)

maniki
Hello there, i have centos 4.4 installed. I am trying to install mod_fastcgi
i ve red the readme of fastcgi
Zand3r
dyson: Sorry, I didn;t ask what I meant. I meant is there a way to install a set of RPMs I don;t necessarily know. i.e. yum install "development tools" rather than me listing a load of development tools and missign something.
Arrfab
(Action) suspects Dyson wishing to test centos5beta ...
maniki
and it refers to the default installation directory of apache2
which is that in centos 4.4 ?
dvheumen
tnx guys, I think I've talked him into getting one of the available irc server(groups) to use as the home for his channel. This will probably prevent a lot of trouble :D
orc_orc
dvheumen: always happy to dump a bucket of icewater on an unsuspecting person
Dyson
Zand3r: yes. Do yum grouplist to see a list of groups and then do yum groupinstall "group name" to install the group
Evolution
maniki: generally /etc/httpd/ is where you'd want to point it for that.
Dyson
Zand3r: in fact it is yum groupinstall "Development Tools" to install the development tools
maniki
umm
Evolution
that's the rough equivalent of /usr/local/apache2
maniki
thnx Evolution i ll try it :D
Dyson
Arrfab: yes, I'm guilty.
dvheumen
orc_orc: I just hope I can keep him in the cold :D
Zand3r
dyson: Sorry - I should have googled yum grouplist - i understand now - thanks!
The man page didn;t relaly help me
Dyson
:)
np
Zand3r: it didn't? hmm... strange... my manpage clearly states that there are group-commands :)
Zand3r
Dyson: The man page shows that there are group commands but does not explain them. If you know about groups then they make perfect sense but as I didn;t quite get the gist of what you meant the man page didn;t help as it showed the command without explanation. No big deal, I got there in the end. thanks.
maniki
Evolution ?
and the mysql dir ?
i tried whereis mysql and i got several dirs
the bin dir the lib dir
clug_man
try whereis mysqld
maniki
which do i include lets say in php configuration
in --with-mysql=/usr ?
or /usr/bin ?
clug_man, mysql: /usr/bin/mysql /usr/lib/mysql /usr/include/mysql /usr/share/mysql which one ? :p

clug_man
sorry, maniki, can you back up a few steps..what are you trying to do?
orc_orc
maniki, clug_man NEITHER need configuration with centos kit
clug_man: it does not matter as it is not centos
maniki
orc_orc it does
it is centos dude :)
i am trying to install php5
as a fastcgi part
clug_man
orc_orc: One thousand apologies. All I saw was maniki trying to find the mysql dir, which is why I suggested the mysqld command. You will notice I then asked maniki exactly what he was trying to do. Hence, I was not aware he was asking a non-centos related question
maniki
and have php4 and php5 together :)
orc_orc
maniki: and in centos and in the adjunct archive, NEITHER requires a touch of php.ini
maniki: and both at once is NOT CENTOS
maniki
well you know better
Zand3r
I notice that yum groupinfo "Development Tools" lists mandatory, default and optional packages. How do you select what you want to actually install or do you just get the default and then add remove individual packages manually?
If I shouldn;t rpmbuild as root then presumably I shouldn;t use the -ba option?
Evolution
Zand3r: incorrect
Zand3r: you simply need to set up a user buildroot
Zand3r: rpm.org and the fedora package contributor docs you were linked to earlier contain doco on how to do this.
range
See the last point on <http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/YumAndRPM?highlight=%28TipsAndTricks%29>
Zand3r
Evolution % range - Thanks - I'll go do some reading aroudn the subject now you;ve pointed me to the general concept.
I understand the last point at that URL but I think my overall knowledge of RPM is lacking.
Evolution
I want a drink and the only liquor in my house is tequila
clug_man
...and that's bad why?
Evolution
the worm and I do not get along
devhen_
ahh, Evo, but its a tequila summer! ..er, winter!
DrDT
my centOS 4.4 install from the server CD immediately reboots after the end of the "loading Initrd" line. Any ideas why the kernel doesn't like my system? (K5/500mhz, Asus p5A-B, 128MB, ALI chipset)
*K6
smooge
When I used to drink.. I loved Tequila. It went great with coffee
DrDT
no opinions on the above? I'm thinking that centOS doesn't support K6 but there's no system requirements on the site saying that
Guest43240
is their a way to forcefully mount drives even when it says its busy but i know that it is not its stuck to a raid card
cryptnix
is it -t ?
box is booting up so i can't do a man on it :P
heh fs type
devhen_
DrDT: centos should support the k6 just fine since it is i386
DrDT
devhen_: I'd think so, but I'm not sure what prevents even the first line of the kernel from showing up.
cryptnix
garbage
DrDT
cryptnix: garbage where? stuck in the intertube pipes?
cryptnix
DrDT: ment to go to IM client
sry
Evolution
DrDT: use the i586 install option
DrDT: then boot into rescue mode and disable cpuspeed
then reboot normally
DrDT
Evolution: thanks, but I tried loading with "linux i586" and it did nothing
well nothing different. sohuld i have done "linux i586 rescue"?
Evolution
DrDT: those were for install. if you've already installed, you may have to use noapic or noapci etc
it's not that the cpu isn't supported, its that the board the cpu is in likely sucks.
DrDT
I'm trying to install
Evolution
try i586 nousb noapci noapic
DrDT
this is an Asus P5A-B board, I've had lots of good success with them
Zand3r
Evolution and range - Thanks for the info on using rpmbuild as a user other than root - after further reading this makes perfect sense now!

Evolution++
cryptnix
mmm .. so no help 'eh ... would my drives being in raid cause it to fail to mount
gerards
hi everyone.
I just switched from apache mod_php to lighttpd with php on fastcgi. and now I have trouble connecting to mysql.
emann
hey gerards
gerards
hi emann
any ideas?
php.ini and my.cnf is almost the same...
Evolution
cryptnix: real raid or fake sata raid?
(Action) suspects fake raid
gerards
on php, the phpinfo() works, mysql_connect('localhost', 'user', 'password') fails.
on the command line, mysql -uroot -pmypassword works.
Evolution
gerards: might want to ask in lighttp's support forum.
gerards
ok thanks.
cryptnix
ide
try mounting drive one ... comes back saying hde1 already mounted or /test busy (yea)
Evolution
cryptnix: that's almost assuredly a fake raid card.
cryptnix
well its in a mirror
so
moving it to a ide controller
should work
Evolution
huh?
no.
cryptnix
well to its on board controller as it sits on a ide2 pc ultra
oh
hmm
Evolution
that's a fake raid card.
cryptnix
bsd works differently then
Evolution
if you set up raid in the bios, it can cause problems.
and yes, bsd works differently
cryptnix
its a pci card
but ... i guess my data is bung then
Evolution
cryptnix: maybe not
cryptnix
got like 50+ gigs of misc items...
Evolution
however you need to stop and think for a moment. take a step back.
cryptnix
k
drive is not mounted btw
will not boot cause /proc is goof'd up
Evolution
because it depends on how you had the raid card set up, how the drives were configured and if you were using the manufacturer's drivers for the card, or built in OS support
cryptnix
running rh 9 ... using cent os livecd to help me out
ah well cent os is seeing the drives just fine doing a fdisk -l shows their partitions
Evolution
cryptnix: also worth noting that rh9 and centos4 handle disks very differently, because of the changes in the 2.4 kernel vs 2.6 in centos4
so something that worked in 2.4 *may* not show up properly in 2.6
cryptnix
hmm
so Evolution what do you suggest
Evolution
cryptnix: that you figure out exactly what you were using, and what you want to do. then provide that information
so far you haven't given enough information for me to assist
and NONE of the information related to things I've pointed out
(Action) wanders off for a drink
olinux
i just upgraded php and mysql with upgrade php and mysql with centosplus repo and now it tells me that php is --without-mysql and --without-gd
Evolution
olinux: either scroll down, to see the rest of the phpinfo page, or you forgot to install php-mysql and php-gd
olinux
ok both gd and mysql seem to be working but the Configure Command still says '--without-mysql' '--without-gd'
i guess that's not a prob?
Evolution
olinux: the configure command is falsely reporting as it's built with them as shared modules, and not compiled in.
olinux
ok thanks :)
orc_orc
olinux: _which_ 'Configure Command'?
cryptnix
appears to be built in driver ... and their in a raid 1 setup
