I have a centos box running apache + php and the load is getting kind of high. I know it's getting a good number of hits but CPU usage isn't being max'd out and memory usage is also looking ok, 200megs used ~600 cached as reported by free, am I misunderstanding what load is reporting?
I thought it was how much the system resources were being used
Delemas
load includes disk access...
I've got a NF4 chipset on which the load is always high during disk IO. On my Intel ICH5 chipset the load is always low...
Daemoen
hey all
Curiously, who else has issues remembering all the flags for iptables :-D
alienzx
ah, what would be the way to check disk access?
Daemoen : I think there's a good cheatsheet out there
Daemoen
I dont need a cheatsheet, i found a neat little program based on curses for it. I like navigation and menu driven systems :)
im working on getting away from gui 100%, but im still not as comfortable as id like with iptables, so had to find a way of dealing with it more effectively
alienzx
Daemoen : http://firehol.sourceforge.net/
not exactly what you're looking for
but it'll help I think
Daemoen
hmmm, ill have to look into that one
i found one that does what i said :)
ipmenu :)
http://users.pandora.be/stes/ipmenu.html
its older, but looks like it should work pretty well
alienzx
nice

Daemoen: if u like a better system for generate iptables rules you can try dwall from dag rpm repo or shorewall
fbdev
anyone here uses phpsysinfo
?
Daemoen
I have fbdev, why?
in fact i still have it running on that machine
fbdev
what machine ?
Daemoen
http://ct-unlimited.com/phpsysinfo
fbdev
i runned the domain.com/phpsysinfo/index.php in the browser and i get /proc/net/dev' not readable in the upper left side corner
Daemoen
( it will take a bit as this is a slower than sh*t dsl connection :( )
fbdev
well i runned the domain.com/phpsysinfo/index.php in the browser and i get /proc/net/dev' not readable in the upper left side corner
and no info is provided .. only the main template
yours looks perfect
Daemoen
you should be able to find the answer to that on their own page in the forums
lol, ive had to make some changes to mine as well
fbdev
there isn't a rpm file in can install right ?
or yum install phpsysinfo ?
Daemoen
not that i recall
fbdev
ohh
Daemoen
dont think so, might be though
i installed mine quite a long time ago, when i first saw it
fbdev
well the problem is that i set in /home/httpd/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs
might be why it cannot read that dev file
where did you install yours ?
Daemoen
/var/www/html
fbdev
ohh
you don't have other vhosts
Daemoen
I do :)
I just organize things quite a bit differently than most people.
now, you say that you have it set as a vhost
whats your vhost directive look like in httpd.conf?
for that particular host entry
fbdev
documentroot ?
puzzled
hi
fbdev
Daemoen, or what do you mean ?

Daemoen
what do you have set as the servername, documentroot, etc?
(Action) cackles as he discovers a way of getting his hostname to work properly using dyndns, his real hostnames, and a dynamic ip
alienzx
there a way I can see what files are being written to?
ed_mann
alienzx: context?
alienzx
ed_mann : I'm watching dstat -d and seeing a bunch of writ every couple of seconds
want to track down what file(s) are being written
ed_mann
alienzx: ok. i'm thinking about it.
lsof?
so_
lsof
lol
range
lsof can tell you which files are open, but I know of no way to tell which files are actually written to.
Well, you can monitor all processes lsof shows with open files, but ...
alienzx
well htat's a start :)
I mean there's not much going on with the server so it can't be too many options
fbdev
Daemoen,
Daemoen
?
alienzx
oh d'oh must not have the package with lsof installed
fbdev
Daemoen, pm

hi all
┬┐Is someone here?
element43
Does anyone have any experience with creating either an rssh or scponly setup that does not allow the user to browse outside their home directory?
z00dax
yum install scponly, rtfm
element43
z00dax, are you usre scponly is in the repo because I can't find it with search at all
Evolution
element43: it's in rpmforge

Zand3r
Hi all.. I askedthis earlier when no one was arround so sorry for repeating myself - does anyone here use Postfix with Dovecot for a Authorisation rather than Cyrus SASL? I'm sttrugling to work out how to get this done without simply dismissing Centos package management and compiling from tarballs
Evolution
Zand3r: http://www.hughesjr.com/content/view/14/29/
element43
Zand3r, which version of postfix and dovecot are you using?
Zand3r
evolution: Thanks but that uses cyrus sasl
element43
Zand3r, I ended up getting newer rpms for dovecot and postfix so I could use use dovecot-sasl
Zand3r
element 43: Currently I'm not - I have a clean Centos install to work with - I have an old mail server running a very old postfix install and am starting fresh but I'm strugling to conform to Centos's package management
z00dax
(Action) points out that cyrus-sasl isnt cyrus-imapd : in case that is causing any confusion
Zand3r
element43: I looked at SRPMs from the fedora distribution but they appear to assume cyrus sasl and I wasn;t too sure how to re-work them for centos having never relied on RPMs before.
hughesjr
Zand3r: any reason why you want to un-Enterprise CentOS with fedora's RPMS :P
(and not just run fedora :P)
ameko
is there an 'easy' way to find out how firefox was built against centos4.4, insofar as the mozconfig? im trying to rebuild it with svg support to little avail.
Zand3r
hughesjr: I realise it sounds stupid - and it's not that I want to - it's that centos's default packages don;t appear to give me what I want (I know I deffinitely need dovecot 1.0+ and I think I need a later Postfix compiled differently .
hughesjr: other than that - I'm happy with centos as a base andif I wasn;t going to use centos it wouldn;t be fedora
hughesjr
ameko: the configure statement should be in the specfile
Zand3r: well ... it isn't a problem, but normally I like to chastize people who want latest and greatest and enterprise together ... they are MOSTLY mutually exclusive :P
(I mean ... it is your server and everything, so you can run whatever you like :P)
ameko
and where might said specfile be? i only find rpms, no srpms
Zand3r
hughesjr: I understand - in this case its to get particular functionalit as oppose dto just jumpin gon the bandwagon. I know there is an argumen for just not getting that functionality because its not mature enough but for this i'm willing to take the chance.
ameko
hrm maybe i found it
hughesjr
ameko: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/updates/SRPMS/
ameko
yeah, found it there heh
diff hierarchy than i expected
thanks, maybe this will finish tonight
Zand3r
hughesjr: Would you frown on people compiling major services from source tarballs (i.e. email and web0 rathar than using RPMs. I'd still Install the dependencies using RPMs until the ./configure scripts were happy
lancelan
Zand3r, 'frown' is too weak a word
hughesjr
Zand3r: using FC rpms is much better than installing from source ... yes
lancelan
pity ?
hughesjr
(building them in CentOS that is ... not using them built on FC)
Zand3r
lol - I wonder if I'm intelligent enough to work out how to create myown RPMsfrom the tar files and the spec files from previous versions.
miah
there is a magic way to create rpms from tarballs automagically
Chrisxx
Hey, how do i get colour in my motd for SSH
any1?
eald
hi, all I have a computer with two ethernet cards that I want to setup in the same network, with the same gateway, in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX for both cards I have GATEWAY=serverip, but when network script starts I end up with only one gateway setup (for eth0), any one knows why or how to solve this?
Evolution
eald: only one of them needs a gateway unless you want to do failover routing or bonding
what are you trying to accomplish, and I'll point you the right way
eald
you are right, indeed I could setup an alias for only one card, there have both ip address, but I want to know how to solve this: if I disconnect one cable, (the one from eth0) I want to be able to reach the computer via eth1
Evolution
eald: there are a couple things you can do
see -> http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/BondingInterfaces
and http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2006-December/073735.html
those should cover 2 ways to do what you want
pick the one that suits you best
eald
thanks a lot Evolution
Evolution
sure.
Zand3r
I know it wouldn;t be as trusted as the official centos repository but would atrpms.net be considered trusted in termsof the third-party repositiories that are available ?

hello. has anyone tried centos' wine on rhel 5 beta 2?
Delemas
I'm trying to build a newer kernel on CentOS 4.4. Has anyone seen a work around for this compiler bug (or know a way to force the kernel to try gcc4)? http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7602
Evolution
Delemas: have you exported the proper CC variable?
(Action) points to the 'custom kernels not supported' sign
(Action) wonders if Delemas has checked the wiki for the custom kernel how-to
(Action) suspects not
Delemas
Evolution, export CC=gcc4 isn't doing the trick. Probably the wrong syntax. I'm trying to find that..
That howto has nothing related to my question...
Evolution
incorrect. it directly applies to your question.
your question sucks however, as it's quite vague.
Delemas: however, if you wish to build your own newer (untested) kernel, you're welcome to. such actions will not be supported here
nor will you get any support AFTER you use your new kernel, as you'll have effectively lobotomized your centos install
Delemas
*sighs*
Evolution
kernel abi's have changed, module options are different etc.
your box will not behave in the expected manner
Zand3r
Is there a yum option to have yum report whatitowuld do based o nthe rest of the command without actually doing it?
Delemas
I'm well aware...
Zand3r
I've looked at the man page and didn;t see anything
Evolution
Zand3r: it does this by default
Zand3r: the default option is to show you the packages which would be installed and then wait for the user to accept the package installation
skipping this behavior requires a -y to be given
Zand3r
Evolution: You are absolutely correct - I don;t knwo what I was thinking - It's late - Mayeb I should get some sleep and do this tomorrow :)
Thanks for pointing this out without jsut dismissing me
Evolution
hehehe
no worries
