I'm setting up ddns and dhcp for a home network... I have dhcp working just fine, but I think I'm missing something on the ddns
I've setup a "home" zone and a reverse for it... a static A record resolves forward and back. the keys are setup between named and dhcpd and there are no errors on startup of either application

Is there anyway to make yum update rsync to 2.6.9 rather than sticking with the 2.6.3 version? Or should I just yum remove rsync and compile latest rsync from source?
snowmoon
Will_, is there a specific need for 2.6.9?
Will_
well I wanted to improve rsync performance and thought maybe the latest version had some performance improvements, though I've not read all the changelogs :)
snowmoon
Will_, personally I would not go out of the package manager then. The reason centos is as stable and reliable is that all the packages are vetted thouroughly. If you are ansy I'm sure there is a rsync from fedora or centos5(beta) that is more up-to-date but it will probably not buy you any performace
Will_
ok thanks, I'll just continue reading through the rsync docs
Hmm there's something messed up with my rsync scripts. I do two remote rsyncs of a directory and they are over quicker than my local backup to a second disk. :/
snowmoon
Will_, nothing wrong with that...
Will_, just means that your local back is to a very slow IO

Hi guys.
Adylas
Hello, I m trying to get the exact same source tree that the builder of the kernel had before making the RPM. 2.6.9-34.ELsmp
(Basicly because I want to compile a module that will link with the kernel)
But each time .. Its different .. I got some "disagrees about version of symbol struct_module"
I think my problem is with the SMP part ..
Why dm.h is not in package kernel-smp-devel ?
snowmoon
to follow up on my own question earlier... ddns under centos wasn't working because one directory had the wrong permission
Adylas
Hmm I think I found ..
I build my ref kernel with the wrong kernel config file (the none smp one)
Init-X
hi all after i updated my postfix can not working with sasl

InitX-PoLo postfix/master[3671]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd pid 4774 exit status 1
whats wrong with my postfix?

Adylas
Init-X, Hello, Exit satus 1 mean ... that the process exited with an error
you need to find the exact error .. (postfix logs ?)
Init-X
warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling
is it?
Adylas-> before i updated my postfix is work fine
but after i update my box through yum
it's not work anymore

Adylas
I dont know postfix sorry
Maybe, search on google
Init-X
i think there must someone had same problem with me
buyaka
does postfix handle all the email server duties or is broken up in some other way?

hey guys, any know if its possible to upgrade from centos to say, fedora core 6?
clyrrad
Hey everyone - im looking in /etc/aliases trying to find the account that takes care of where CRON email messages go - I dont see an entry for CRON, does anyone know what account CRON runs as? Is it dameon?
Hydrogenum
could someone remind me of the easiest way to get kernel source? (the source centos uses, not the vanilla source)
clyrrad: cron runs as root
mmcgrath
Hydrogenum: from yone of the mirrors.
Hydrogenum
mmcgrath: I could've sworn it was possible with yum
mmcgrath
I seem to remember a great deal of discussion about yum and srpm's but I don't remember the outcome.
clyrrad: you want to look at the "MAILTO=root" near the top of /etc/crontab
Hydrogenum
yumdownloader --source can do it, assuming the packages are available
daMaestro
yeah.. and i think you also have to endable the source repo
yumdownloader --source --enablerepo=*source* package is normally what i do
enable*
clyrrad
mmcgrath: thanks I found the solution - I see that if your CRON does not output anything then it wont email, so I remooved any echo's from the cron scripts and fixed up the issue
thanks anyway :)
Hydrogenum
blah... rpmbuild -bp errors out....
# rpmbuild -bp kernel-2.6.spec
error: Architecture is not included: i386
k-y
sux2bu
Hydrogenum
:(
(Action) goes back to working on a rhel4 box.... seems likely this is just a centos silliness
yup... worked fine on rhel4 box :P
mmcgrath
Hydrogenum: if you wouldn't mind if you think you've found a bug report it to the centos dev's. I'm sure they'd be interested to know of any differences between RHEL and Centos.
Hydrogenum
well, it's just a build issue... probably doesn't affect runtime stuff
that said, I'm looking into kernel sources due to a real bug-hunt ;)
johnmatrix
hi, i emailed my server admin to check why my site was running slow and this is the reply he gave..
DSM software is the one which adds with DVD player and card reader. It seems to be in the server occupying almost 96% of CPU and makes the server slow.its configured in /usr/local/dsm.Please check it out.
what can i do about this?
snowmoon
johnmatrix, fire you admin?
clyrrad
hahahahhaha
johnmatrix
funny but thats not much help...
clyrrad
johnmatrix: why would your admin put this off on you?
your paying him - he should fix it
johnmatrix
they will fix it, i want to know why this is happening
the 'php' process is taking up 90+% cpu according to top, and they said its the DSM software... im confused
snowmoon
johnmatrix, DVD software is NOT part of centos... so your admin had to have installed it
johnmatrix
hmmmmmm
snowmoon
johnmatrix, and any admin worth their salt would know the kill command
clyrrad
snowmoon: good point - why not just kill that proc?
snowmoon
clyrrad, Why that would stop the admin's movie!
clyrrad
hahahha - touche!!
johnmatrix
makes no sense! my server is hosted at layeredtech with thousands others, admin is at a server management company in another location
snowmoon
johnmatrix, you are getting shafted... by whom I can't say
The only reason to be running DSM DVD software on a server is to decode and re-encode DVD's probably for release on the net
clyrrad
johnmatrix: have you even authorized such use of your server?
snowmoon
Of course /usr/local/dsm appears to be related to Zend... if you admin can't tell the difference between Zend and DSM splitter tools then ... well you're getting screwed
johnmatrix
well there is many admins
every time i send an email its a different person that replies
very fast service actually, they reply within the minute
snowmoon
johnmatrix, I hope you're not PAYING for this support
johnmatrix
i bought the server through server4sale.com
its reputable
comes with semi management
snowmoon
johnmatrix, I suggest that you take your questions back to server4sale.com since this is clearly not a centos issue
johnmatrix, I also highly suggest hiring a reputable admin/web development team locally to work with you
johnmatrix
hmm well their service has been excellent so far
might it be possible that my server has been rooted or something?
clyrrad
you mean someone gain root access?
snowmoon
johnmatrix, I have already pointed out several gaping holes in what you have told us. Either you are not telling us the whole story or your admins are incopetient or they are lying or your system has been compromised.........
johnmatrix
sorry im not a master of unix , i barely understand whats going on myself
snowmoon
or maybe "all of the above"
clyrrad
snowmoon: yea - based on what he is saying - I get the idea he thinks his system is compromised
snowmoon
clyrrad, I think the admins are cluless and can't tell the differnece between Zend and the DSM splitter tools
johnmatrix
so what are you saying ? /usr/local/dsm is Zend?
clyrrad
even still for a proc to eat up that much CPU all the time - something is wrong
snowmoon
johnmatrix, you need professional help
johnmatrix
the process has stopped now
clyrrad
(Action) snowmoon is refering to your server heheheh
snowmoon
johnmatrix, I might be able to work with someone who is trained
johnmatrix, great, now is your webite still running?
clyrrad
johnmatrix: is your site working fine now that proc is killed?
johnmatrix
it is and it is loading fast, but i think its just going to happen again...
thats why im trying to get to the bottom of it myself, if its a problem in my code or not etc
snowmoon
johnmatrix, including dynamic pages?
johnmatrix
yes
clyrrad
who else has root access to YOUR server?
even that is not definitive - it does not mean a web app that runs on it is not compromised
johnmatrix
just the server management people
snowmoon
johnmatrix, the ones who have DVD on the brain? the one where you get a new admin every few minutes?
johnmatrix
are you saying that DSM is not dvd related?
clyrrad
johnmatrix: is this a colo in a datacenter? If so how much are you paying them per month?
johnmatrix
yeah its a dedicated server hosted at layeredtech
clyrrad
is it your server or theirs?
johnmatrix
theirs
clyrrad
then damn well get pissed
and tell them to fix it
