peerce
as there's absolutely no standards on where to store the raid metadata on the drives.
fwak A. yum update of a old 2.1 system is taking for-EVER. lemee guess, not many 2.1 mirrors, much slowness ?
gator
does centos come with flash 9?
peerce
flash isn't GPL, is it? I seriously double any linux comes with it.
er, doubt.
gator
is centos any good?
peerce
its a rebuild of red hat enterprise linux, very suitable for servers where long term update support and version stability is important.
gator
do u know of any xfce distro's
with grapihcal install
peerce
I don't hardly use X, most of my installs are scripted on headless servers at remote locations.
siezer
gator give xubuntu a look
er
whatever

anyone using centos 4.4 ia32 on a 64bit xen host? (xen requires 64bit kernels) need to find a way to lie to the guest OS and convince it that the arch is 32bit.

k-y
god damn it
4.4 reinstall w/ raid1 setup across all partitions just failed on the first reboot
mmcgrath
k-y: did grub fail?
IIRC thats a common issue.
k-y
yeah, looks like it
i dont have time to troubleshoot tho, i'll revert to non-RAID for now
mmcgrath
I think its a pretty easy fix, basically booting rescue of some kind and re-running grub
peerce
Disconnect; um, if you install the i686 version of centos, it doesn't matter if the hardware (or VM) is x86_64, it will stay in 32bit ia32 mode
so, why do you need to 'lie' to it?
k-y
mmcgrath: yeah, tried that; rescue failed to mount /mnt/sysimage
Disconnect
peerce: using xen on a 64bit host, so the kernel centos sees is 64bit.. (so yum et al are trying to use x86_64 packages)
(Action) has x86-64 guests working fine, but we need - or at least would like - to also run 32bit guests on the same server pool
Dovid
hello all
i am trying to use grep to find a certain string in all files. as per man grep i am doing grep -R 66.187.132.132 *
66.187.132.132 being thw string
and I wana look at evry fule
fule*
is this correct ?
evil_steve
Dovid: that question is better asked in #linux, this is a Centos-Specific Channel
Dovid
thanks
Disconnect
so.. on the centos-specific side.. how do I force the system (or at least yum) to believe its 32bit even though its got a 64bit kernel?
(uname -a reports x86_64)
Dyson
Disconnect: depends on the purpose
Disconnect: for some things setarch might help
peerce
Disconnect; yum is for updating the running system. why do you want yum to think its a 32bit system?
you trying to fetch a i386 rpm ?
Disconnect
peerce: because it IS a 32bit system (at least in userspace)
bleve
Disconnect: it is not if uname -a reports x86_64
Disconnect
its a xen guest - the host is 64bit and xen requires 64bit kernels for it's guests. the 64bit guests are working fine, but i need a 32bit userspace for one of them.
bleve
hmmh. setarch i386 yum update ?
setarch i386 uname -a
no idea if yum is working with that :-)
Disconnect
bleve: yah setarch is at least a start :)
bleve
Disconnect: why not hardcode i386 arch into your yum config ?
Disconnect
bleve: cuz i can't find where :)

bleve
/etc/yum.repos.d/*
peerce
Disconnect; if you're in a 32bit userspace, uname -a should be reproting i?86 not x86_64
Disconnect
Linux centos_pristine 2.6.16.33-xen #1 SMP Mon Jan 22 18:14:12 EST 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux / /bin/uname: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.5, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
peerce
sounds like you're running that in the HOST, not in the 32bit GUEST environment
Disconnect
peerce: linux32 and setarch (and probably others) exist because tools like uname return info based on the KERNEL, not the LIBRARIES. (HMM, should I capitolize ANYTHING else? NAH...)
peerce
zen doesn't virtualize the kernel?!?
er, xen
Disconnect
peerce: xen can run full-virtual environments at a performance cost (on newer chips, which this is) or it can run ported environments (custom kernel and no tls) at a lesser cost.. in the long run we've got to light some win32 guests too, but for the linux guests the goal is to have them running as fast as possible
(and for the irc archives: the fix for this was setarch and changing the repo to i386-only, depending on whats being run.. and the problem isn't centos-specific or xen-specific, it can affect any dist with 64bit kernel and 32bit userspace when an app tries to determine the arch)
Evolution
do I get to remind everyone now that xen is not shipped with centos, and generally OT here?
just askin.....
(Action) points to #centos-social for the OT bits

?
I think Red Hat should buy that off me, and use it in a slogan.
"Red Hat Centos... the minty Linux!"
peerce
anyone here who works on centos-docs ?
z00dax
peerce: wuzup
peerce
I have a very short procedure that works cleanly to convert a old RHEL 2.1 system to CentOS 2.1... I know thats god awful obsolete, but I couldn't find this procedure anywhere online
z00dax
peerce: there is a page on YumOnRHEL on the wiki page
peerce
that only talked about 3 and 4, AFAIK. I looked all over.
z00dax
thats done by euclid, so ping him here and maybe you guys can co-ordinate something
BlackHand
(Action) is converting an rhel4 box to centos4 box now
z00dax
euclid: ping
euclid
don't mess with my page!
:-P
z00dax
there ya go
euclid
I don't think YumOnRHEL is the right place for converting RHEL->CentOS
it's for running Yum on RHEL
peerce
where is it?
euclid
which, other than using the CentOS yum packages, has nothing to do with CentOS
z00dax
also, i am not sure its a convertion - more of a sidegrade
peerce
well, it replaced all the RHEL packages that had available updates, including the kernel and glibc etc etc
alleycat
peerce: did you do anything else but yum -y update ?
Cen0s
have a problem with a scsi controller that died
(2:01:13 PM) Cen0s: and had to replace with a different controller
alleycat
that's what I have done when I switched from RHEL 3.0 to centos 3.3
Cen0s
raid comes up with the hardware but centos does not boot
how do I add a driver at this point
peerce: um, this is the same kind of controller, or a different kind?
peerce
Cen0s; you're asking me?!?
Cen0s
It's a different controller but both are Compaqand the raid sets are identified
I just need to load the driver somehow so Centos will know
shadow2
i am new with CentOS i would like to ask how and if i can install packages with commands ? like yum some OS have or via ports etc
Cen0s
It does see the boot sector some how because it's starting to boot
peerce
does Compaq even have a RHEL 4 driver for this board ?
euclid
shadow2: CentOS uses yum
Cen0s
yes peerce
if you don't mind
shadow2
hm ok i thought fedora.. thank you
peerce
Cen0s; what format are these drives?
er, drivers?
are they source that you have to `make` into the kernel srpms, or are they packaged .rpm or what?
Cen0s
rpm from hp's web sie
alleycat
Cen0s: usually HP provides just binary rpms which only work on specific kernel versions
peerce
you might be able to boot the CentOS 'live' CD, mount the HD in a /mnt kind of directory, then chroot to that, and load the RPMs
yeah, thats going to be a REAL problem.
linux is proactively hostile towards binary drivers
Cen0s
is there documentations any where to show me how to do that?
live cd does boot
euclid
I'd use the install cd and boot in rescue mode
peerce
yeah, that would work too
euclid
that should step you through getting chrooted into your system so you can install
Cen0s
will hat update the drivers on the existing set up?
peerce
assuming the install CD can find the drivers for this SmartArray
Cen0s; not automatically, thats something you'll have to do the hard way.
Cen0s
it;s a old controller and should work
I'd love to look at some docs if any are avail
alleycat
(Action) thinks: a new initrd might be needed
Cen0s
I don't want to waste anyone's time with blank questions
peerce
I doubt any are, unless they are from HP/Compaq
alleycat; presumably the HP rpm builds that
alleycat
peerce: assuming they like the kernel
when I needed drivers, the only available ones were for RH9
peerce
I seem to recall when I installed RHEL3 and RHEL4 x86_64 on a HP DL585, I had to use a HP driver CD to get the smartarray 5i working
that was a year+ ago so I've forgotten the details
Cen0s
I have the smart start cd
but how will that help with an existing setup?
peerce
I dunno. I think I'd have to attack it with a hammer, and hope I could nail it. would probably take me a couple days of poking and prodding to sort it out.
Cen0s
krap
I was affraid of that
the funny thing is that all my backups tar gz are now corrupted
bernardl
Cen0s: did you try centos4.4?
Cen0s
4.4 server as the CD
peerce
anyways, euclid/z00dax, this is what I did to hook RHEL2.1 up to the CentOS 2.1 repository, and it worked. http://pastebin.ca/326304
its basically the same as the v3 and v4 versions of that same procedure, acually, a couple fewer steps.
and slightly differeint in the RPM-GPG-KEY
euclid
isn't there someplace on the website that already has this for v3 and/or v4?
peerce
I found it various places in various forms, for 3 and 4, yes, but not for 2.
http://wiki.centos.org/FAQ/CentOS3#q5 but thats talking about WBEL3 -> CEntos3
euclid
sounds like there should be a RHELToCentOS page on the wiki with instructions for 2.1, 3, 4, and soon 5
Acidic32
how can i bypass cpanel
euclid
Acidic32: ask the cpanel folks
Cen0s
so how would I rescue my system
wha can I search on
peerce
speaking of RHEL -> CentOS. someone involved with PostgreSQL claims that he has extensive benchmarks with postgres showing that RHEL4 is considerably faster than CentOS, he suspects its related to the compiler, that RH could be using alternate compiler versions rather than the RHEL supplied GCC version
euclid
yes, RedHat is not self-hosting. They build it in weird ways, sometimes even with unreleased versions of gcc
BlackHand
peerce: any url ?
peerce
Black5un; I asked for that, he says he hasn't compiled his '600 pages of data' yet (uh huh.)
alleycat
some friends compared this week icc to gcc and on intel procs it does seem to produce faster code
