torbjorn
hm.. rpmbuild -bb of openldap srpm gives me "/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.82916: line 38: ./configure: No such file or directory"
what do i do with that
orc_orc
torbjorn you did not type that -- -bb option only applies to .spec files
torbjorn
you are right, i didnt type that
could it be that required dependencies arent specified in the source rpm?
orc_orc
I decline to speculate from an imaginary error
mmcgrath
torbojrn: you want rpmbuild --rebuild /path/to/srpm
torbjorn
what is imaginary? rpmbuild gave me that....
im trying rebuild
mmcgrath: that ends with a different error, a compile error this time
mmcgrath
sounds like you have some work to do and some documentation to read up on. Go grab a coffee :-D
torbjorn
ill see if i can make sense of the temp file
i thought dependencies would be resolved, or give an error, when installing source rpms
Dyson__
torbjorn: some build-dependencies are unmentioned in the srpms, because they are standard on development-machines

torbjorn
i see. i have groupinstalled Development Tools, but ill look for other possible missing packags
GloriousSwain
is the postfix from centosplus quota patched?
fprimex
if anyone is interested, I figured my usb ntfs disk permissions problem out :)
edited /usr/share/hal/fdi/90defaultpolicy/storage-policy.fdi
under HPFS/NTFS, I added this below the should_mount merge:
<merge key="volume.policy.mount_option.umask=022" type="bool">true</merge>
GloriousSwain
Doh -- site:www.centos.org dovecot mysql strikes again --- see i really am trying to get better at not asking dumb questions ;)
Lazarus
Whats the symbol equivelant to C: for linux?
Sneaky_Bastard
there is no equivalent
torbjorn
rpmbuild fails for no apparent reason i can think of. looks like it tries to run a configure script that doesnt exist in the source rpm.
orc_orc
Lazarus the root of the primary filesystem is at '/'
Sneaky_Bastard
because a linux filesystem doesn't have "drive letters
torbjorn
i put together a summary here:
http://pastebin.com/865344
Sneaky_Bastard
it has mount points
Lazarus
Well thign is
The file I'm trying to link another file to is /home/<file>
Sneaky_Bastard
C: D: E: and F: as seperate partitions could be mounted almost anywhere
Lazarus
But it won't work without a letter or some type of symbol that would be the equivelant.
Dyson__
Lazarus: yes, it does. You mount a filesystem somewhere into the directory tree
Sneaky_Bastard
they would be /dev/hda0 , /dev/hda1 , /dev/hdb0 , /dev/hdb1 in terms of the actual device names (each partition gets own device name)
*might be*
torbjorn
Lazarus: the best equivalent, as orc_orc says, is /
orc_orc
torbjorn: building as root is almost a guaranteed method to hose your machine -- http://www.oldrpm.org/hintskinks/buildtree/ has some pointers for you
Lazarus
Oh okay
Thanks
torbjorn
thanks, ill have a look

Sneaky_Bastard
*normally* /dev/hda0 gets mounted as "root" ----> '/'
orc_orc
torbjorn: this curriculum will help you as well: http://www.gurulabs.com/goodies/guru+guides.php
heelpp
hi
what do i need to install in my centos 4.4 to act as router with basic static routing at a 20mbits/s bandwidth that can handle 1000 workstations(some are under a nat router and some are using public ips)?
Sneaky_Bastard
I have used setups with different disk partitions being use for '/', '/home', '/var' and '/temp'
orc_orc
heelpp: buy a real sysadmin who can read and do research with google for 1000 users
heelpp: all the answers you seek are at: http://www.centos.org/docs/4/
torbjorn
orc_orc: the ./configure which seems to be missing, should it have existed there in the first place?
heelpp
my cisco router is acting very weird that is why i need a temporary pcbased router
GloriousSwain
heelpp if you paste a sh run on a site somewhere i can look at the config
orc_orc
torbjorn: the version you are building is oriented toward using a DBD -- it carries its own copy in some openldap's out there
torbjorn: I have no idea how this relates to someting which centos ships, however
torbjorn
i see. thanks for help, ill poke around some more
heelpp
GloriousSwain: it's somewhere in pastebin.ca ill try to search it there
bernardl
does anybody know if i can put environment variables in kickstart configuration files?
snowmoon
bernardl, In the pre and post seactions I don't see why not... they are just shell scripts
bernardl
snowmoon: yeah i know those work, but how about the main beef? :)
eg. i want to variablize hostname...
snowmoon
I don't think so... why not just use DHCP?
bernardl
i'm thinking the url or nfs line
snowmoon
bernardl, or use a cgi to serve up the kickstart
bernardl
i guess i can specify those at the command line?
is there a howto setup for the cgi?
Dyson__
bernardl: simple workaround for http-based kickstart-files: PHP-enabled webserver and a php script that generates the kickstart-file
bernardl
is this something i need to write myself or is something readily available?
snowmoon
bernardl, DIY... it's an hour or two of time between google and writing the script with nothing more than basic unix knowledge

JavaGeek
hello
I want to add java support to a centos-4.1 based server. I guess the easiest way is for me to use the packages at jpackage.org
but they don't provide a centos-specific repository
is the rhel repository compatible with centos? and which version?
BlackHand
centos4 == rhel4
for every purpose
JavaGeek
ah, ok. Thanks
z00dax
well not every purpose
you dont get the SLA and support contract, and you dont need to sweet talk the Finance manager into paying the bill
JavaGeek
heh
NthDegree
and you get kick-ass extra repos ;)
th3man
hi
anyone here have a repo for the gnome 2.16?
JavaGeek
unfortunately the vps hosting service doesn't provide RHEL :)
k-y
has anyone ever encountered the RAID1 md boot bug where when you reboot you are greeted w/ the flashing prompt and "GRUB" on the screen
Nightwork
I've just done a fresh install off a 3.8 Server CD, imported the GPG key, and installed the kernel-source via yum. I'm getting various errors when I try to compile, such as make menuconfig unable to find curses.h. I assume I'm missing something, but what?
z00dax
Nightwork: lots of stuff
Nightwork: read up on howto build the kernel from a src.rpm ( kernel-sourcecode is not meant to be used to actually build a kernel )
teknoprep
hi all
where do i put modules that i want to load at boot time
z00dax
teknoprep: in the initrd and /etc/[modprobe,modules].conf
teknoprep
ty
do i have to write
alias {module-name}
ie -> alias bonding
jbt
what is the size of single servercd?
BlackHand
jbt: one cd ^_^
jbt
no, i mean in MB, i have here 211MB
z00dax
jbt: its well more than that
650+
keaw
Anyone have insight on installing VMware server?
z00dax
keaw: what about it
keaw
the eth bridging part
is it better to use NAT?
z00dax
what do you think ?
keaw
hmm. well since i couldn't get the bridging to work i guess i should have chose NAT
:)
is there a way to change that setting back to nat
z00dax
keaw: I am sure there is
Zerberus
vmware-config, has to be modified in edit mode for the device
keaw
I figure there is too... and the search is on
Zerberus: Thanks I'll look in to that
AKPILOT1
im running centos 3, and have a device connected to my serial port on box, i have tried minicomm to try connect to it but it sits at offline, anyone know how to see if minicom is connecting to device or try get it to?
DTGorm
ok, this might be a dumb question but here it goes... downloaded a .deb file and from reading, its debian based.. will this work on my RH based system?
jbt
DTGorm: nope, unless you have some package management called alien
DTGorm
ok, tks
sucks, i was gonna try out the kaspersky mail av for linux but the .deb file is all they had :(
Anyone got suggestions for a really good anti-virus scanner for mail servers?
I have Dr.Web but it blows and the default license for plesk blows
jbt
DTGorm: what's your mail server? on their channel you can have a good chance of getting good suggestion
Zerberus
clamav, avira, nai uvscan
DTGorm
qmail
ive heard about clamav but i just want to make sure i install one that will work pretty good
Zerberus
what means "pretty good"?
z00dax
well, he runs qmail
Zerberus
:)
AKPILOT1
anyone know how to connx to a device vial serial cable
and figure out which serial device is connxed to
z00dax
AKPILOT1: not a centos issue
jbt
AKPILOT1: setup the minicom
minicomm
AKPILOT1
i tried that, system is showing two tty and neither will switch from offline to online
jbt
AKPILOT1: had it setup with all the right settings? flow control, baud rate ..etc?
AKPILOT1
yup, 2400 / N / 8 / 1
when i go into minicom, i take it automatically connects or attempts too, do i have to jumpstart it like hitting enter or something
jbt
AKPILOT1: do hit the enter
reboot the device if necessary
z00dax
guys this really isnt a centos specific issue - if you want to talk about it - please feel free to do so, but in #centos-social
jbt

DTGorm
do pretty much all antivirus solutions that scan email also scan the whole box?
z00dax
DTGorm: thats a really bad idea
you want to scan email on the system perimeter
DTGorm
since its a web/email server, id want it to also scan the httpdocs of my clients just to be sure they dont up some infected file
z00dax
err
DTGorm
or does av on linux work that way?
z00dax
firstly, you need to be clear on what you are trying to achieve
DTGorm
gotcha
my main objectives are to stop what virus i can in email and on web
z00dax
so scan email on the smtp perimeter, on the way in and out
w.r.t webdocs - do you know of any virus that is spread via web pages ?
DTGorm
ive heard of them, yes
being specific, cant name names
but im thinking i see its unrealistic my clients would up an infected file
