Has anybody noticed an oddness of the procps package, specifically, the ps binary?
I'm troubleshooting an openldap problem on a machine that I just built yesterday, upgraded with a later version of openldap.
donavan
my ps binary has mostly evenness
cannonball
lol, ok, I guess I was asking for that.
But in top, slapd CPU usage is jumping all over the place, which is expected as incoming queries hit the server.
in ps, it sits relatively stable, not moving. I can turn off the queries to this machine by setting a weight of zero at the load balancer and the CPU usage doesn't change.
It's almost like it's showing me a memory usage stat instead of a CPU usage stat.
I'll keep debugging, but for reference, the exact command I'm using is watch -n 1 'ps um --user=ldap'
tralala
hello
does anybody run centos on g965 mobo with core2duo ?
billyjean
is there a way to turn off core dump files?
tralala
any thoughts about migrating from RHEL Beta2 to CENTOS 5 ?

range
billyjean: Yes, with ulimit.
tralala
hm, it doesnt like its a pik hour, hoped to get soe info about the upcoming release ...
range
tralala: I think the 965 might be a tad too new for 4.4, there was a thread on the mailing list about that board today.
tralala
i tried debian+clones for now (it was easier as i did it over usb, no drivers for the ide chip)
i am not really happy till now, will try rhel beta 2 is some minutes
range
Ah, now, wrong ...
<http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2007-January/074271.html>
Seems to work but not with complete support maybe (expect to see more in CentOS 4.5).
tralala: This is the complete thread: <http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2007-January/074380.html>
tralala
going to be 4.5? i thought next will be 5.0
ty
range
4.5 will be the next in the 4 series.
billyjean
so if i have a script with ulimit -c 0 in the begining it will not allow the core dump to happen?
range
Yes.
So if ou want to turn it off completely, you can set that in /etc/profile
billyjean
cool
tralala
:) hehe i bought intel mobo for better linux suport, will report in some minutes if rhel works with it (xen 64 was my pain on debian4)
adaro
I am just curious, why should one use centos over debian
tralala
easy answer :) centos almost RHEL (enterprise suport), debian testing way to go on my notebook
adaro
yes but there is no support for centos
lotek
I have a question about the boot up of centos
scud
what is the inter-process communication (IPC) directory in centos?
what/where
adaro
if you want support you have to buy rhel
lotek
I have created a USB stick to use as an install medium. I can boot it up and even run the installer off it with no problem, but I want to use kickstart. However, it doesn't give me an opportunity to do "linux ks=whatever"
tralala
correct, but i want to know that for example Oracle has tested it, they test at best on RHEL and Novell, I dont want to pay for them, so i get CentOS
lotek
am I using an incorrect boot, vmlinuz, or initrd image?

range
scud: Normally /dev/shm
IIRC
lotek
Anyone?
range
I have that in the isolinux.cfg (yes, you have to rebuild the iso image after that).
Don't you get an isolinux prompt?
lotek
no
alleycat
lotek: what did you copy to the stick ?
lotek
diskboot.img, vmlinuz, and initrd.img
sparkeh
Im having problems with my CentOS VPS emails, i cant send or recieve, is there any way to diagnose this?
alleycat
sparkeh: yes.
sparkeh
how?
lotek
is there any difference in vmlinuz and initrd.img in the images/pxeboot and isolinux/ directories?
alleycat
sparkeh: http://tinyurl.com/anel
sparkeh
thanks
...
range
I'd start with looking at logs and configuration.
sparkeh
I meant is there any way to scan the mail servers and find out why things arent getting through
range
That's what the maillog is for.
alleycat
range: unless there is a firewall blocking port 25 for the VPS... or other reason
range
alleycat: Might be. I hate guessing.
sparkeh
thats the thing, 25 is open
alleycat
range: my point exactly.
sparkeh
I tried sending an email from and to the same address and still didnt show up, o_0
range
I'd start with looking at logs and configuration.
tralala
I am happy RHEL support DG965MQ mobo + Core2Duo, sound graphic etc, now I cant wait for the CenOS
going to test the hype called xen
adde
I got two network cards in my newly installed centos box... one is a 3com the other is something else... I cant seem to be getting them online... Wehere can i see which card is eth0 and one...
range
adde: "dmesg | grep eth" should tell you. Or compare the mac addresses of the cards with what's in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth*
morcego
adde: take a look at /etc/modules.conf. It should give you a clue to which is which. Also, "dmesg" might give you some information.
Correction: /etc/modprobe.conf
range
Or that.
morcego
modules.conf ... geez ... bit outdated.
adde
thanks guys
hmmm where do i configure the cards?
if just used netconfig
morcego
adde: there should be a system-config-network utility around.
adde
"DROPPING NETIF_F_SG Since no checksum feature" any ideas about this msg?
gator
Does centos come with flash 9?
?
Ha will this is great, if i cant get support for a simple question no way im useing centos.
yo ganjagrl
Hydr0p0nX
centos is more enterprise based , but i can check to see what's included gator
ganjagrl
Hey gator.... So how do i get telnetd to stop doing reverse resolution for every client connected?
:)
gator
hahaa im a noob.
Hydr0p0nX
why are you still using telnetd?
ganjagrl
Hydr0p0nX im not my friend... this dweeb of a client i have insists that he cant make them all change to putty overnight
Pussy
gator
:P
ganjagrl
Hydr0p0nX... hence, we are stuck at telnetd
Hydr0p0nX and "it" does reverse resolution for every little box connecting at it takes forever since most boxes have no reverse resolution reccord here
Hydr0p0nX
yup
khaladan
anyone know what's going on during startup when it says "Initializing hardware..."? Right before it says it started udev. What script(s) initialize the hardware??
adde
If i unpack a software in /root then run make install etc... Does the software install in /root or can i remove the folder later?
khaladan
make install typically installs the software for use system-wide and subsequently the directory used to build the software CAN be removed
adde
thanks...
to unpack a tar gz package its tar -zxvf ? is that right
kspath
man tar does not answer that?
adde
Probably does but since i had it my head i just wanted to verify with somone... instead...
But fine...
olinux
how do i build rpm from src code
ganjagrl
thanks anyhow.... i guess ill try twaking tcp wrappers a bit
BBye
RadSurfer
What do I change in yum.conf to allow un-signed packages?
gpg check?
billyjean
how do you get inittab to restart a program?
Evolution
billyjean: inittab doesn't.
service foo restart does
flippo
Any suggestions for a tool to monitor cpu temperature?
Or perhaps somewhere to look in /proc?
CaspeR-Bz
Hy all ! What are the minimum hardware req. for CentOS 4 ?
olinux
look it up
smooge
One can install on pentium hardware, but Pentium III and above is recommended
256 MB of ram I think is the bare minimal for installation
CaspeR-Bz
oops :D I have a very very old pc ... PI 133 Mhz , 128 sdr and 4 Gb hdd :))
maybe CentOS 2 ?
will work ?
smooge
You might be able to get it to install using a text based install
The graphical install is what eats up the ram.
However, I have not done an install on such old hardware so I can't be certain
CaspeR-Bz
ok, thanks :)
adde
anyone got btsco working on centos?
can i run rpm packages in centos?
Evolution
adde: rpms that are designed for the proper version of centos, yes.
cac_
hi folks
Does Centos provide with beryl or compiz?
Evolution
no.
cac_
What is Centos mainly used for ?
Evolution
it's mostly a server distro.
cac_
I see
as I read, it's completely free, is not it?
Evolution
it is indeed.
cac_
centos is simmilar to fedora
Evolution
no.
cac_
what is different?
ed_mann
cac_: it's based off RHEL
(Action) askes if he can say that.
Evolution
cac_: http://www.redhat.com/rhel/migrate/whichlinux/
everything that applies to RHEL applies to centos. except for the SLA'd support.
and the pricetag.
centos is built from RHEL's freely available sources, and designed to be 100% binary compatible with RHEL.
cac_
I see
personal question. what is the distro you think accomplish all desktop needs for an average user.
?
Evolution
depends on the tasks the user has set out.
for most things I use centos.
for some, fedora.
