DaveNotik
Guess not.
Arrfab
DaveNotik : this is not the goal of this channel ... the idea is that you read doc , try to implement the solution yourself, and if you encounter a problem then you come back here (if it's centos related ...)
DaveNotik
Arrfab: Right, I've been trying. :)
Sorry to bring capitalism into this.
Will keep trying, that's how I like to do things.
But man, Linux is complex.
I know that's arguable.
Arrfab
DaveNotik : compare to what ?
DaveNotik
Compared to Windows, set up, administering mail for example, in terms of learning curve.
Arrfab
DaveNotik : i don't agree : m$ exchange is the most difficult thing to troubleshoot ... believe me ... anyway that's off-topic here ...
DaveNotik
yea, not for now.
Uggh, so where to start?
Where's the mail queue?
<sob>
Jesse-
/var/spool/mqueue ??
i wasn't paying attention to anything you said except about the mail queue
heh
mikefoo
What pkg manager does centos use?

Jesse-
yum?
mikefoo
ahh ok didn't know
I use fedora, I want to try centos out
pony
Jesus Bobby
Jesse-
nice
gral
rpm
??
Jesse-
yah
miah
rpm is the package manager it uses
hence 'redhat PACKAGE MANAGER'
orc_orc
miah: *cough* RPM Package Manager
Evolution
it's one of those recursive acronyms now...
orc_orc
change was sometime after RHL 6.1 as I recall
miah
oh ya
forgot they changed it
z00dax
and there are some who consider rpm to really be a file manager
orc_orc
(Action) considers it a breath mint, a candy mint, less filling, and tasting good
NetGangsta
adduser lol;passwd lol;lol123
someone got something like that to work?
my ssh login dont work so I wanna use HyperVM Command Center
and I need a cmd to add user and add passwd eazy
so?
smooge
NetGangsta, man -k passwd, look for batch mode
NetGangsta
smooge I see nothing about that
smooge
man chpasswd
NetGangsta
but u dont know the full cmd?
miah
the manpage does, try reading it
smooge is teaching you to fish
NetGangsta
adduser username -p password
right?

miah
have you tried it, and or read the manpage? does it seem like it will work?
orc_orc
NetGangsta: of 'password == The encrypted password, as returned by crypt(3)
NetGangsta: we do not spoon feed answers here -- if you won't read, we won't read for you
miah
alternatively, you can encrypt your password with md5 and some openssl magic and use that
i shouldnt say encrypt, but hash your password with md5..
(Action) feels better now
orc_orc
miah: 's OK -- the man page mislead you into using the wrong formulation ;)
miah
im tired, still at work, and helping the dba's
i blame oracle for sucking out my intelligence
to top it off, i just got back to the states saturday after working 14 hour days for the last two weeks in panama
pony
(Action) gallops round and round the channel repeatedly while mercilessly stomping on Zathrus nasty, nasty Oracle the mindkiller
NetGangsta
miah u know how to encrypt md5 passwd with mirc?
orc_orc
NetGangsta: google: encrypt md5 passwd openssl -- third hit here
NetGangsta: please read teh /topic, as to 'anel' and asking smart questions -- if you will not make time, we will be glad to help you find time to read
NetGangsta
nothing work
sh*t
miah
heh
\monster\
is there a way i could merge two partitions without killing the system? /var and /var/log to be specific
miah
man cp
orc_orc
\monster\: rsync with bandwidth limits in effect?
\monster\
heh what
currently i have a 10gig /var and 5gig /var/log ..i want to turn that into 15gig /var
orc_orc
\monster\: much different question --
miah
still, cp and lvresize
\monster\
ya checking cp
miah
unless you dont have the space in /var for the contents of /var/log
you're going to want to drop into single user mode too
orc_orc
mv /var to /var_, make a new /var, boot down to single user node and lvm the two drives together; build our the rest of the directory heirarchy; undo th e mv, and you may be OK -- but /var is pretty touch in non-single user mode
\monster\
this is via ssh :(
orc_orc
s/our/out/
miah
well then just make sure to shutdown as much as possible, use lsof to make sure nothing is open in /var
orc_orc
\monster\: doable, but not for novices
miah
may be very difficult
\monster\
does it make any difference that i have free partitions available that i could resize to 15gigs ..then copy the var data there ?
miah
well it helps
but you still have to deal with open files in /var
Evolution
\monster\: the problem is getting the stuff that writes to var to stop for a little while so you can re-order sh*t.
\monster\
ahh screw it, ill just keep it as is
Evolution
that's the spirit!
orc_orc
Evolution: kill -9 as root , and the mv trick I mentioned works pretty well for me
Evolution
kill -9 1
\monster\
its a fresh system so theres nothing running in it
orc_orc
hander to keep ssh running
\monster\
other then the basic OS services
orc_orc
harder
miah
dropbear-static is helpful for situations like this
NetGangsta
I got access to /etc/passwd got a way for change that jason1:x:505:505::/home/jason1:/bin/bash
for I can login to ssh?
Evolution
NetGangsta: by default any user with a valid shell can log in
however, if your VPS has restricted this, you need to see what they've done
alexluna
hi all!
NetGangsta
I know but I losted my default login password
Evolution
NetGangsta: translation: ask your VPS provider for support, as they may have modified things from how we ship it.
alexluna
how configure yum.conf
?
Evolution
alexluna: it comes pre-configured.
NetGangsta
so I want to add a new user for i can login into ssh
Evolution
NetGangsta: translation: ask your VPS provider for support, as they may have modified things from how we ship it.
NetGangsta
Evolution my VPS provider say to me to reload my OS.
Evolution
alexluna: your question is very vague. what is it you want to configure.
NetGangsta: then either do that, or find a better provider.
NetGangsta: as I told you yesterday, they have modified things from how we ship it. any advice we give may not be accurate, and may break things further.
alexluna
the repos
Evolution
you are at the mercy of your provider.
NetGangsta
:/
Evolution
alexluna: the repositories don't go in /etc/yum.conf
alexluna: see wiki.centos.org/Repositories
alexluna
i can't install nothing
i just install vim
Evolution
okay.
[corrupt]
do I somehow need to force yum to update from repos?.. im trying to find a mailman 2.1.9 package to upgrade my 2.1.5 installation..
BlackHand
[corrupt]: install fedora core 6 ^_^
and go to #fedora
Evolution
[corrupt]: 2.1.5 is current in centos. there is no update for it.
[corrupt]
ah, ok.
sorta old :/
Evolution
[corrupt]: that's the point of the distro.
it's not about the latest/greatest. it's about stable.
[corrupt]
well, ive been running 2.1.5 for quite some time, but 2.1.6 fixes some issues that I have :/
Evolution
security and bug-fixes are backported, but with very rare exceptions, versions are not updated.
[corrupt]: file a bug at bugzilla.redhat.com against rhel4 then.
[corrupt]
alright, thanks.
i guess I can manually upgrade it
Evolution
if you do so, it would be better to rebuild the rpm from a newer src.rpm (like from fedora)
but you're on your own for building. we don't support software we don't ship.
orc_orc
Evolution: mailman has been a special case from time to time as the pythonista have varied the approach on the held item mailstore
Evolution
orc_orc: ah. I haven't followed mailman that much.
and why the hell am I op'd?
[corrupt]
Evolution: once I have built the RPM, would it be straight forward to use rpm to upgrade my 2.1.5?
or would you completely uninstall 2.1.5?
Evolution
[corrupt]: the newer rpm should upgrade cleanly, assuming it's packaged properly
orc_orc
[corrupt]: this is #centos -- what feature in the later version requires this trip?
Pat-2007-
hi, i have a problem when i boot, the boot sequence stop at :hardware storage network........someone already see this problem
Evolution
Pat-2007-: yes. it's usually caused by poor onboard audio conflict.
[corrupt]
orc_orc: 2.1.6 changes the way the From: header is written (it adds the list description).. a fairly simple change, but one that is important to my application.
sorry for the off-topic questions :/
Evolution
Pat-2007-: if you have any usb devices with audio in them (cdrom, webcam etc) unplug them.
then reboot.
Pat-2007-
Evolution : ok , dont work
Evolution , its why im here
BlackHand
Pat-2007-: newer motherboard ?
Pat-2007-
laptop Hp dv 1000
Evolution
Pat-2007-: then give us some more detail to go on.
