Pretor1ab
hi
simple question for you gurus
how can i set dns records locally so that my machine thinks mail.fomain.com is at my ip address?
pls
Evolution
man hosts
or /etc/hosts
Pretor1ab
yes but what about mx records
Evolution
for that you have to set up DNS, and that is different than your original question.
Pretor1ab
oh sorry thats what i meant
Evolution
easy answer "set up DNS"
Pretor1ab
i am not 100% on the difference between resolv.conf /etc/hosts and dns records
Evolution
then now would be a good time to read the documentation on them so you know your options.
Pretor1ab
ok ok ok
is it annoying for you -- keep having to deal with beginners ?
i dont want to keep coming here if i keep upsetting people

Evolution
not so long as they're willing to learn, no.
Pretor1ab
i am more than willing to learn
Evolution
if you read the docs and come in with "I tried this and got stuck here..." I'm happy to help
if you have a "how do I set up foo" you'll get pointed to the docs.
Pretor1ab
i havent been to bed since a week before wednesday
Evolution
see the difference?
Pretor1ab
yeah cool
Klink
I'm having a problem with a Centos 4.4 i386 system. kacpid will consistently eat up 100% cpu time on one processor of a dual processor opteron system. I've read about a kernel bug with lm_sensors and have disable lm_sensors, run with noacpi and still have problems. Does anyone know what causes this.
wildwrk
Pretor1ab: note the question just posted.....very nice
Pretor1ab
right got it thanks
donavan
9 days strung out on meth -- you might want to put the keyboard down
Klink
wildwrk: thanks
donavan
kill some kittens and baby bunnies and sleep for a few days
range
Not that anyone knows the answer to Klink's question ... :)
Klink: Sorry. But that was for effect >:)
donavan
range: dodgy $34 motherboards cause that
Klink
range: that's what I figured...do you think it really matters? I don't feel a loss of performance.
donovan: motherboard is a Tyan S2885.
range
donavan: For dual opterons? Where do you buy
?
Klink: If it's always at a 100% cpu on one processor - well, I'd think so. Is that a fresh 4.4 install?
donavan
out of Evolution's government surplus jeep backseat
Klink
range: no, was a 4.3 upgrade
range
Klink: Do older kernels also show that (meaning: Can you boot back to a previous kernel, just for looking at the problem)?
abisen
the src in /usr/src/kernel/ are not the complete source that i can compile. How can i get the rpm (not the source rpm) that is the default (standard) centos 4.3 kernel-source rpm that would install the src in /usr/src/linux or someplace

donavan
abisen: for what reason do you need to compile a kernel?
range
abisen: <http://wiki.centos.org/I_need_the_Kernel_Source>
Klink
Range: I haven't tried that yet...but I recently downgraded from X86_64 and never experienced this issue...which brings me to another inconsistency...in the i386 flavour of the kernel the CPU's are not recognized similarly. IE powernow is only supported on CPU0
range
Klink: upstreams bugzilla doesn't find problems with kacpid.
Klink: Hmmm. Maybe you should use x86_64 for those processors.
donavan
powernow is an 64bit feature
Pretor1ab
i heard from a member the other day that a server cd for 4.4 should be available at the weekend -- is this still going ahead?
abisen
donavan, i need to patch a vanilla 4.3 centos kernel with some sata raid devices and disable the inbuild infiniband drivers so that i can use the properitory packages and enable some other options
Klink
donovan: I don't think so...I ran FC5 initially and powernow was working in the i386 flavour
donavan
hmm, okay
how'd you downgrade?
Klink
Donovan: reinstall
Donovan: Clean and shiny
donavan
right right
jig-saw
hi, I'm currently in Gnome and my resolution is screwed up, I can't seem to be able to open the console with ALT+CTRL+F*
any tips how i get out of this?
ok I'm in the failsafe console
jhaig
How can I add an item to the menu in Gnome?
range
With a .desktop file.
jhaig
Where should it be put, to be available system wide?
range
<http://www.gnome.org/learn/admin-guide/latest/glossary-1.html>
jhaig
Thanks.
range
<- also known as the guy who googles faster than you
dan__t
haha.
donavan

turnpike420
range: obviously my typing is really off today
dan__t
Absolutely, range.
range
turnpike420: Just asking as looking up the first gave me te second :)
jhaig
I did bother to google, but obviously not for the correct thing. What I found was a post in the CentOS mailing list asking the same question, with no follow-ups.
range
Which I didn't know the meaning of either.
turnpike420
:)
it was retarded... I'm tired... forgive me... I think my brain is demanding beer, that should help
range
jhaig: I googled for "gnome desktop file" the moment you asked where it should be put.
Oh.
I looked it up with google ...
turnpike420
yup, beer it is... c ya guys later
range
turnpike420: BTDT - at least didn't barf on T-Shirt.
turnpike420
BTDT ?
range
Been There, Done That ...
turnpike420
oh yes... I wo'nt have that problem... (which might be a sign I have another problem) ... just teasing...
I better go... beer goddess is calling

So aside from bind, what other little resolver daemons are available?
Zalamander
dnsmasq
dan__t
Almost like a caching resolver, but without the caching?
Zalamander
or just /etc/hosts
dan__t
./etc/hosts won't resolve google.com
I suppose it would, but I don't want to touch /etc/hosts
Zalamander
sure it will, if you put google.com's ip address in there
heh
dan__t
Anyone else have a useful suggestion?
heh
Zalamander
you didn't like dnsmasq?
dan__t
naa.
Zalamander
oooooooook
sharpie
there are some little resolvers, but I cant think of them now
dan__t
i think i found adns
leonel
is there an openssl update for centos 4.4 ?
I saw it for centos 3
Zerberus
https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2006-0661.html
leonel
now saw it for redhat :P
Klink
are there some avahi rpms floating around that will work on Centos 4.x?
BlackHand
why the need for avahi ?
Klink
or some other mDNS
donavan
whats wrong with bind?
Klink
I don't know...does it do all that rendezvous junk?
donavan
no idea what that even is
Klink
Rendezvous, I think, is the apple protocol to browse services on your lan
so client shout's to a reflector, hey I have ssh...come and hack me ;)
z00dax
Klink: there is mDNS in c4 already
Klink: have you looked at howl ?
Klink
z00dax...I will investigate
Ocoth`
hey
Ocoth
I am trying to install SVN
z00dax
Ocoth: excellent
Ocoth
when I run "yum install subversion mod_dav_svn" I receive "Error: Missing Dependency: httpd-mmn = 20020903 is needed by package mod_dav_svn"
anyone know the cause and possible solution to this?
z00dax
sounds like user error to me
what do you get for 'yum list mod_dav_svn'
paste the output to http://pastebin.ca/
Evolution
which repos are you using also?
Ocoth
Evolution no idea
z00dax
thats what i was hoping to find out with the yum list
Ocoth
z00dax http://pastebin.ca/164792
z00dax
why is stuff listed twice ?
Ocoth
which stuff where?
z00dax
maybe you should speak to the person who setup your machine
Ocoth
oh that lol, sorry didn't read it
z00dax
what happens if you do a 'yum install mod_dav_svn'
pastebin the results from that
Ocoth
z00dax

Klink
z00dax: just got howl up and running, thanks
z00dax
go open a support ticket with them, tell them their httpd packages are broken
Klink: :)
Klink: as a matter of interest, what device are you using zeroconf from ?
Ocoth
what is broken, exactly?
z00dax

Klink
z00dax: so far just a pbook
Ocoth
z00dax apache?
MatBoy
