what would you choose between suse, ubuntu and fedora fro desktop? I'mlooking for bleeding edge packages, wide multimedia support and good kde integration
range
lovelyx: And you really do expect an answer?

kumamoto
ubuntu is the way to go on desktop they seem to specialize on that
lovelyx
yes i do
leonel
lovelyx: if you are using centos try fedora core 5
lovelyx
im happily using frugalware but since i have a lexmark z600 printer, i have to use an rpm based distro
sleeplap
why does the printer determine your OS?
LuvRedheads
betond .. what do you expect ins a redhat based distro channel ... why don't you install all 3 and make your "own" decisio ......
lovelyx
sleeplap, cuz the drivers are only rpm, unless the distro make its own driver package for the printer
LuvRedheads, cuz other people use and need the computer too, i trust poeple opinion here, so i guess you could point to the best decition
sleeplap
lovelyx: thats silly. you can use alien to convert rpms or you can use most any linux distro, if its supported in one flavor its most likely supported in the others.
orc_orc
lovelyx: there are perl impleentation of rpm2cpio to get the files out of a .rpm packaging -- no need for any particular distribution approach
lovelyx
ill try with aline and rpmcpio

Evolution
acoolone: at the end of 'yum update' there's a prompt. Y/N

AdamDH
is there any way I can check that rndc is working?
acoolone
I do not get that
it says there is a missing dependency
Evolution
acoolone: what says that? paste the error into a pastebin from the topic.
seanos
(Action) begins disliking ipw2200, more effort than madwifi...
Evolution
seanos: eh? cp *.fw /lib/firmware/
reload network modules or reboot
it's trivial.
I'm using it right now on my lappy
seanos
....in theroy yes -- however there is a certain lack of workingness
jcaceres

Pretor1ab
hello everyone
quick question -- is there a 4.4 server cd x86
z00dax
Pretor1ab: yes
Evolution
jcaceres: no. centos comes with php 4.3.9-x, but yes, if you use centosplus you can update to php5
AdamDH

Evolution
jcaceres: centos comes with mysql 4.1.x
Pretor1ab

Evolution

AdamDH
Im still getting this named[1595]: 10.168.192.in-addr.arpa.zone.jnl: create: permission denied
z00dax
Pretor1ab: i thought you were going to offer me a job. damn
Pretor1ab

z00dax
AdamDH: check perms in /var/named
Evolution
AdamDH: and make sure selinux is off.
AdamDH

its owned to named.named
acoolone
Evolution: Ok pasted results
z00dax
AdamDH: u+w ?
AdamDH

I think its working
dhcpd: added reverse map from 100.10.168.192.in-addr.arpa to media.horden.internal
mkovacs
hi there... centos newbie here... I'm trying to get apache 2.2 working with 4.4
AdamDH
Evolution just like to say thanks for all the help today and to any one else who gave me any tips. Thanks guys.
mkovacs
I've tried installing apache from source and have had some issues and my install is kinda borked... just want to verify... there isn't an RPM or yum package available to update apache to 2.2 from 2.0 right?
z00dax
mkovacs: lots of stuff breaks with the 2.2 move - and no there isnt any rpm for that
mkovacs: you will also need to rebuild anything / everything that depends on or works with apache
mkovacs
z00dax: ok yeah I suspected I had some work to do... the APR utility isn't compatible
z00dax: I'll google around a bit more but do you know of a good resource that overviews what the various things might be that need to be fetched/rebuilt?
if not no worries and thanks for your help
z00dax
mkovacs: rpm ?
lots of docs around on howto use that
mkovacs
oh ok so I can query it to tell me dependency trees?
sorry I'm a newb .. I've used rpm to install/remove stuff but certainly don't know my way around it very well
devhen
mkovacs: use rpm packages, dont install from source. that way its a lot easier to manage and keep updated
acoolone
Evolution... where did you go
supjigatr
Anyone know how to get SUN's jar working on centos?
I need the I option to work.
guest_
supjigatr: install java from java.sun.com
supjigatr
I did.
java -version works and reports 1.5.0_07 SE
Evolution
acoolone: where did you paste them?>
supjigatr: if you installed java from sun's site, you likely need jpackage's sun-compat-java package
acoolone: I was installing a new monitor.
some assembly was required.
supjigatr
Evolution: I have that as well.
It has the fastjar I believe but it is listed as installed.
douglash
I was running yum update
it stopped at updating udev
and now on bootup it stops at Starting udev:
is it toast?
z00dax
why did you reboot ?
douglash
it locked up
z00dax
how do you know that ?
douglash
because I let it sit there for about..... 10 hours
didnt change
z00dax
wow, yea - 10 hrs is kinda long
douglash
so I can do like a inplace upgrade or something to repair centos?
I guess I can do an interactive startup
z00dax
humm, boot from the rescue cd, chroot to the instal, rpm -ivh /var/cache/yum/*<wheverev>/udev.rpm
