Hi all. There is a way to know how many RAM modules I am using on my motherboard using only the motd or some other info that I may grab via an ssh console? Thanks.
range
Ah well, that would be malicious. I'll try Hanlon's Razor first.
Evolution
Filo^: as in "I have 2 memory slots used" ?
Filo^
Evolution: there is a document where this question is answered?
Evolution
Filo^: I'm trying to figure out what you want, so I know what answer to point you to
Filo^: it's also rude to answer a question with a question.
{GoldenEye}
ok
rado1
omg

{GoldenEye}
Evolution: can I just add the coorresponding groups and run smbpasswd -a for each user?
Filo^
Evolution: sorry, I will explain better. I have a remote only access to a linux box (centos 4.3) and I am wondering how can I know if I have space to add some more ram. So I am asking if there is way to read somewhere how many ram slot are busy/free. Ok?
Evolution
Filo^: if your hardware is supported reasonably well, dmidecode will tell you this.
it will require some understanding to translate what it spits out though.
range
Filo^: dmidecode will tell you something about your system. But I don't know if it can tell you about free RAM slots.
Evolution
{GoldenEye}: again, read the samba docs, or ask in #samba
Filo^
Evolution: range: I will install this binary and see what I get, thanks
Evolution
range: it won't tell you about empty banks, but it will tell you what's in the full banks.
that plus the motherboard info and a bit of google should tell him if there's room left over.
Filo^
ehm... where can I find this dmidecode?
rado1
yes dmidecode will let you know if you have a slot free on some sys. anyway
donavan
my grandmother keeps her dmidecode in her handbag
its dangerous in the hands of the untethered
rado1
it will tell you that that slot has bank connections NONE
Evolution
Filo^: it's in kernel-utils, and is in /usr/sbin/, so you'll either need to provide the full path, or be root
delhage
Filo^: yum install dmidecode
oh
rado1
and that's the truth!...Ev...
delhage
sorry
Evolution
delhage: fact check, *THEN* provide answer......
:-P
delhage
Evolution: I'm on a fedora, dmidecode is a separate package there, but yes you're right
epaphus
range: i have the idea that even though the user does not log out properly in other distros (such as rh) the bash history would still be saved. Why isnt it ocurring here?
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 27 07:48 .bash_history -> /dev/null
thats my answer... ha!
rado1
whoa
why is is goin to null?
epaphus
rado1 well somebody set it like that .. what else :/

rado1
it's not your box?
or in your domain of boxes?
epaphus
it is, but .. there is a admin who wants to get smart.
rado1
ok...call the priest for last rites then
Filo^
Evolution: range: I have found in the output the memory controller that controls two slots but both the two slots have two memory module information --> no slot free... right? (there are only two slot for ram in recent (last 4 year) ibm compatible computer, right?
rado1
right each has 2 banks
epaphus
does anybody by any chance know of any program that can log bash history .. aside from the usual way?
Zaki
hi
what is this?
rpmdb-CentOS i386 2:4.4-0.20060823 base 28 M
hali
epaphus: rlwrap can log in any way you want to any file..
andresmujica
zaki is the rpm containing the namespace of all the centos packages, its upstream vendor equivalent is rpmdb-redhat
not pretty sure if redhat or rhel

rado1: Evolution: range: via dmidecode I have found that my pentium IV processor has a normal speed of 1.6Ghz but a Max Speed of 3 Ghz. have you any experience with overclock in linux? what do u suggest?

I always thought #gentoo was ------> that way.
Evolution
Filo^: hardware mods are off topic in here.

I repeat: Violators will be repeatedly shot.
Filo^
ok...
epaphus
how about setting .bash_history to another location and path other then root. How can i do that?
Evolution
Filo^: however if it's listing that in dmidecode, it's probably referencing CPU stepping for battery usage.
range
epaphus: man bash. Search for history.

qkit
good morning guys :P
MatBoy
is someone using softraid with mdadm here ?
qkit
trying out the chatzilla :D
i'm using it with mirroring. MatBoy
anyone can hear me or see me ???
MatBoy
qkit, nice, me too. Have you ever seen that mdadm is rebuilding all the MD's without a drive that has been going down or such thing ?
qkit
i dont get it ? what you mean MatBoy? i have once restore a broken raid in my box and it work find.
MatBoy
yeps it works fine. I have a workstation that once in some weeks is rebuilding all MD's automaticly... drives are OK... all partitions are up and all MD's are resync=Delayed and it starts from the beginning. I have the ide it's a raid-check or something
it works OK btw
qkit
so ? what can be the problem?
MatBoy
qkit, I need to know if this is really a random check
qkit
random check?
MatBoy
yep so see if the drives are both healty or something
It just starts... nothing in the logs about broken things
qkit
you can used mdadm or webmin to see was both of the drive are in health condition or not.
u can used the mdadm command the fine it out.
MatBoy
everything was healty as I said before
qkit
so it should be in good condition.
MatBoy
only all the MD's were in resync=delayed and it started from the first to the last to rebuild everything
qkit
resync delayed???
MatBoy
yep because it's resyncing everything MD after MD
qkit
but in my case it didnt show delayed it build straight away when i replace the drive it show how many percent already being sync
MatBoy
there was nothing broken here
qkit
ok...
MatBoy
it just set every MD to resyync=delayed and started MD by MD resyncing
and I could work fursther because I saw in the log that it set the resync not on max for performance
so I could work fursther
-s
qkit
you mean it show the status MD to resync = delayed in you raid or was it the resync taken too long? ?
sorry i still dont get what you are looking for?
MatBoy
here
I have 6 MD's
qkit
ok
MatBoy
it only resyncs one MD at once
so
everything was set to delayed
and it started from one
after that one finished....it moved to 2
so on
qkit
oh, i see.
MatBoy
but the reason why it wanted to resync everything... I don't get it
qkit
i have no idea on it, cause i only used 2 md.
MatBoy
ah OK
qkit
cause u doing raid on all those 6 md?
are you mirroring all those 6 md?
MatBoy
All my partitions are in raid
raid1
qkit
so it was 2 hdd or 6 hdd?
MatBoy
indeed
2 HD's with 6 partitions
qkit
i see....
MatBoy
6 partitions each
qkit
cause u doing the raid 1 on 2 hdd so it sync all 6 md
MatBoy
yes
that is not the problem
the question is: why were all partitions online and was mdadm going to resync all ?
qkit
so this should solve the --> reason why it wanted to resync everything
MatBoy
just with no reason at all
qkit
why were all partitions online <-- wasnt you choose to used raid 1 for the 2 hdd?
so a sync will be done on all partition to 2 hdd
cause it was raid 1
MatBoy
no
it was a working mirror
and no... it does not rebuild every MD when only one get's offline
it will place that one offline and only rebuild every MD when you completely replce the drive
I did not replace anything
was just working
qkit
oh, you mean out of sudenly the machine start to sync all the hdd? was it?
MatBoy
yeah !
finally :)
osity
i booted my box and it says init: version 2.85 booting... and thats all i get....
qkit
does that have any strange error in the log ?
MatBoy
qkit, nope
osity
it has been down for a while, and unfortunatly i'n new to linux
qkit
try this command ?
MatBoy
that is the strange thing
qkit
mdadm --examine /dev/hde1
osity
qkit: is that for me?
qkit
nope.
is for MatBoy
MatBoy
qkit, I will do that tomorrow
but it happened to me about 4 weeks ago also, on the same time
qkit
oh?
MatBoy
(Action) has friends :P
yep strange indeed
