hi
hello
pmbj
Hi, I can't get my windows intstallation to work after installing Centos. Does it destroy the boot record on the opposite hard drive when installing?
I was able to mount the drive and get my files, but I can't boot into windows?
sappy
yes
Linux kill windows boot
pakal
pmbj you need to edit the boot.ini file and change some values there
range
Errm. No. It overwrites the mbr, but should have offered the option to put windows into the boot menu when installing.
pmbj
I'm wondering if it didn't do that because I had red hat 8 on it before
sappy
it will
when it prompt a screen on boot loader
lilo or grub ?
pmbj
the boot loader only knows about centos, I get a blinking cursor when I try to boot into the windows hd.
grub
sappy
u saw the option of Windows and Centos

pmbj
no, I didn't
sappy
hmm probably u overwrite the MBR
pmbj
it does seem that way
sappy
or there is no option on ur grub to boot into windows
since u are able to mount windows on linux
range
Google for "grub windows dual boot" and set up your grub.conf accordingly.

any good spam database website?
RedT0mt0m
hi ;-)
rado1
so...Ev...you went to the beach?
ddn
hi all
does centos 4 support Fax Modem ADVANTEK Internal 56k ( INTEL CHIP) RETAIL winmodem?
rado1
ddn: you would be better off asking ADVANTEK bout this I believe
ddn
what is the name of the hardware change detector?
dtm
ddn: kudzu
ddn
yeah, ty
rado1
hey, dtm!!
dtm
ddn: if it's already detected something then you can delete its entry from the kudzu database in /etc/sysconfig/kudzu or whereeever it is, and restarting kudzu, to force a redetection.
rado1: why hello there
rado1
been tilling my garden in this friggin heat a lot of the time today
dtm
:-o
rado1
tryin to dry it out some
dtm
i planted a tree and sprayed megapoison yesterday
and it rained just in time today
rado1
what kinda tree?
wait you by tucon?
tuscon even

(Action) brain hurts

rpmbuild seems to think I'm building on an i386. This isn't new, but I don't think my system started this way. The rpm docs are WAY inadequate for me to trace through the rc files.
dtm
zooks: '--target=i686'
depending on the package
zooks
Thkx. For that simple, I would have expected to be able to find a doc.

For those having problem with the backspace key after upgrading to 4.4, I wrote and explanation of why it is happening, and the solution. Hopefuly it will be useful for someone else: http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/0rLQCK84.html

anybody know what is required for a ruby on rails installation?
tinne
Hi there. I even finished my first centos installation (4.4 on x86_64, remote via pxe/vnc). Cause i growed up with debian i'm not trained in exposure to installing packages with apt or yum. To simplify matters i want to install now (base-system with minimal x-window and vnc is running fine) some of the package collections provided by the system-config-packages utility - but without having any cd or dvd as physical medium or as local image. So i
dtm
tinne: cool.
tinne: you cut off at "So i"
tinne
Oh I'm sorry... next try...
So is there a way to install these package collections directly with apt or yum without installing each single rpm?
dtm
tinne: 'man yum' tells you about the group capabilities
search for 'group'
tinne
ok. i just wanted to ask for the right tool before reading tons of man pages... thanks.

How can I tweak centos a little to make it a bit faster? Its a server that generates pdf's via open office
So its a lot of cpu time and a bit of IO
zooks
jsoft: Rebuild the kernel. Strip all modules you don't need. Select your processor.
I would also look into generating pdfs another way. Open office is built for comfort more than speed, last I heard.
If you really must use open office, you want a version that's optimized for your processor.
I seriously doubt you want to do that yourself, however.
jsoft
Yeah as bodgy as it is, openoffice is kinda required.
Other ways of making pdf's are a mission to maintain when you need to change the template
orlock
jsoft: looked at ghostscript?
jsoft: you can set up a samba printer that receives postscript, then converts that to a PDF, and you can set up multiple printers, each with a different set of joboptions
but i am not sure wat you mean by templates
jsoft
odt's
you throw data at openoffice, and it puts it in the data in the right fields, and there we go
And with open office, its very easy to change the arrangement of those fields
ATM it does one pdf every 7 seconds or so
orlock
Hmm, dunno
zooks
jsoft: I don't know if you are much of a hacker, but...
Depeding on the exact nature of the fields you are throwing, you could probably use open office to generate a single pdf.
Then hack that pdf with the new data.
jsoft
What about all that irqbalance and microctrl and rawdevices and all that other bollocks, do I even need that stuff? I almost always disable that stuff by reflex... does that effect performance?
zooks
When you change the arrangement, have open office generate a new pdf.
jsoft
Nah the pdf's are too different to do that I think
But out of interest, how does a bloke alter a raw pdf? Is it tricky?
zooks
It's a question of how many pdfs per template are generated.
jsoft
around 700 per template each run...
zooks
You probably want a 7th level hacker for that, then.
I've never hacked a raw pdf, but I know it's text, which means that someone who is good with perl and knows what to look for in the pdf should have no trouble at all
Unless there is some stupid cryptographic checksum involved.
If there is, there should be a way to turn it off, however.
Come to think of it, there might even be a utility out there to do something very much like that.
LuvRedheads
maybe you need to optimize you system with mad funroll-loops
zooks
For your earlier question, I've never played around with that level of the system. But the IO activity is NOT going to be an issue unless you are swapping out to disk a lot.
$100 of ram should fix that.
kemp
hello.. i want to install the w32codec. All I could find is the src.rpm. The command rebuild -bb <package> is not working. can anyone enlighten me?
Evolution
kemp: it's likely a nosrc.rpm
which means you need to get the source yourself.
further assistance would require you pasting TFE in a pastebin so that we know what error you're having.
kemp
TFE?
Evolution
The <expletive> Error.
or "The Fine Error". either or.
kemp
Okay - I pasted into the link provided.. how can you/me/anyone access that?
sorry - never used the pastebin 4
Evolution
read what it says.
kemp
sorry evolution - a mod's life must be extreeeeeeeeemely, uuurm, frustrating? g2g now - maybe i'll figure this out yet..
jsoft
what is a 'defunct' process?
SAM_theman
hey wheres the site for centos file
easy-web
SAM_theman: do a google search... Centos, Download mirrors
i got mine from bigpond (my isp)
rado1
anyone use php 5?
Evolution: you write in php?>
I am just wondering if I should bite the bullet and install it
I have never installed anything from Centos Plus before...think it's in there
natrixgli
hello, can one compile 2.6.17-x for CentOS?
I'm trying to use CentOS (trixbox) on an AMD X2, and Kernel 2.6.9-xx is not stable when running both proc's
donavan
natrixgli: I find that hard to believe
rado1
donavan: what you know bout php5 and what we run?
donavan
I use the stock php
rado1
do you write w/objects-cases?
natrixgli
donovan: the kernel panics with a spin_lock error in /var/log/messages..... it's a documented problem
donavan
there is a simple patch running around for that issue natrixgli
rado1: I wouldn't touch PHP for a penny under $150K / year
natrixgli
yeah, but is it possible to compile a more recent kernel? I'd just as soon do that if it's possible.
rado1
(Action) is movin waaaay back
natrixgli
2.6.9 is pretty old
donavan
natrixgli: 2.6.9 is stable, we like stable here
natrixgli
I can appreciate that...
rado1
why not break my friggin heart donavan!
kreg_work
openvpn --rmtun --dev tap0
how do i do that using /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts ?
oops, meat mktun
in other words, i want tap0 to exsist before ifcfg-tap0 execs
rado1
donavan, whew glad you said that!
dan__t
hi.
hughesjr, you still use that build.sh script located on your site?
qkit
afternoon all. :P
kreg_work
yo
qkit
:D
kreg_work
i made a simple script that prepares a few virutal devices. i need them to be in place before /etc/init.d/network executes.
do i just tell chkconfig to do this?
dtm
kreg_work: you'd have to make the symlink manually. the numbers indicate the order.
kreg_work: see /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/ for example
Mikaku
kreg_work: you can add your script with chkconfig --add, but it will need a "magic" line that tells to chkconfig how the script must be created (runlevels, and priorities)
kreg_work: do a "man chkconfig" and see that line specs at the end of the man page, in the "Runlevel Files" section
natrixgli
Hello.... Can anyone point me in the appropriate direction to fix the spin_lock problem with SMP kernel running on an AMD X2?
I find many references to a fix, but no documentation / howtos, etc
(BTW: using 2.6.9-42-smp
orlock
nope
