Nivko
Hi
how i can update my CentOS 4.3 to 4.4 with yum?
Zerberus
yum update
Nivko
but then he update ALL packages
Zerberus
no, just with those which ship with the .4 update
Nivko
what u mean? (sorry, im a newbie)
Zerberus
to update from centos 4.3 to 4.4 just run "yum update"
what is your problem?
if you have other repos enabled (i.e. rpmforge or karan's), then you may exclude them from operation
Nivko
i think maybe my software then gives errors :s
ill try
rado1
Zerberus, before you run yum for the first time...you have to establish the repo key huh?
Zerberus
rado1: it should be offered automatically

rado1
oh update...
I was thinking new install
Zerberus: ya it should fly fine to update

Evolution
oh right. I'm terribly sorry.
to make up for it, allow me to forward this personal email I got, asking for financial assistance in Nigeria.
DaveNotik
Hi all. Best resource for a Linux command line newbie? I have a CentOS dedicated box I need to wrap around.
dtm
DaveNotik: here's a start http://smuckola.org/projects/sysadmin_cheat_sheets.html
rado1
DaveNotik, you brand new to linux?
DaveNotik
rado1: Sorta.
rado1
you have centos installed?
DaveNotik
Been programming LAMP for awhile, installed here or there, don't think Linux is ready for the desktop, first dedicated box.
Yes.
rado1
curious ...why you chose centos?
don't get me wrong...sure glad you did
just wondering why
DaveNotik
rado1: Sorry, two channels.
rado1

dtm: whatcha workin on?

DaveNotik

DaveNotik
Actually private msg w/ someone.
Um, I chose it because H-Sphere supports it. Via Hivelocity.net.
Seemed to a be a good one for the enterprise, stable, yada yada...
rado1
IMHO...the best...it's got it all if you want it

time to light one if you ask me... need to get this cluster built sometime soon
rado1
yep...dunno when but I guess I wanna mess w/clusters some...one of those rountoit thangs
jdog
I can only do 6 at a time... no more power outlets :o
DaveNotik
Hmm... I feel so helpless. So where do I go to find out why port 8080 is not working?
i.e. if anything is running at 8080.
jdog
I was able to hack together a kickstart system that will load install images based ultimately on the MAC address of said system
that should speed things up a bit, now, the question is did I spend more time on the script than I would have just configuring this crap by hand? :)
diomedes
are there any tools for managing windows AD servers from linux?
mmcgrath
diomedes: like rdesktop?
diomedes
a ts client is not what i had in mind
mmcgrath
you can use ldap tools to manage AD.
though there's tricks to it. I've used phpldapadmin in the past. While there were some unexpected results, for the most part they played well together.
of course openldap is in that list of tools.
Evolution
RH needs to put out a beta of RHEL5 soon.
rado1
gettin ansi Ev?
f13
Evolution: I've heard thats coming soon.
mmcgrath
Last rumor I heard, it'll be ready by the years end (the full release, not the beta)
Evolution
rado1: yes, I am standards compliant as per the ANSI
rado1
lol
f13
Evolution: there is a rumor that it'll be public beta on RHN in less then 7 days.
but thats just a rumor.
Evolution
mmcgrath: yeah. the .mil rumor factory claims that certain areas of the government have a semi-functional beta.
for testing CAC/smart card authentication.
f13: yeah. if they're honestly expecting to release by year's end, they're going to need to get a beta out soon.
rado1
when 5 does comes out...I will probably wait and see a bit
Evolution
especially after the Q/A disaster that was update 8, and the impending doom that 4.4 seems to be bringing...
LuvRedheads
heh
diomedes
can you get clamav to scan squid traffic real time/
rado1
breaktime!
oh...everyone's already on break
kreg_work
is /etc/sysconfig/static-routes considered unsupported?
where is the appropriate place to store static routes?
Zerberus
kreg_work: see /usr/share/doc/initscripts*/sysconfig.txt
device specific static routes have to be placed in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route-<interface-name>
kreg_work
ah
didin't know about that
daMaestro
kreg_work, read the /etc/init.d/network file.. it shines some light on how things get setup and torn down
flippo
What an impressively specific response.
Zerberus
device independent static routes into /etc/sysconfig/static-routes (read in by /etc/init.d/network
kreg_work
Zerberus, i tried static-routes, but i don't know about the /etc/init.d/network reading it in. seemed to be ignored
Zerberus
kreg_work: both config files follow "ip route" syntax - one difference: /etc/sysconfig/static-routes rules have to begin with "any"
kreg_work: this is why /usr/share/doc/ exists :)
kreg_work
i've been doing so, but i seem to be getting conflicting info. such as comments in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-routes
vs usr/share/doc
i do not understand how to do it as the distro intends.
ifup-routes seems to be a different concept
than making route-<ifname>
Zerberus
ifup-routes is a script file, part of the whole network scripts
do not touch it
kreg_work

diomedes
well this is weird
i setup a router and it works fine, the pc's on it lan interface are all good, but now 2 machines on the same subnet as the routers wan interface can't get out, they point to the same router as the linux router does, this is odd
donavan
you thwack the arp tables on everything? it sounds like you've been moving stuff around
diomedes
they just started working again, but for a good 10 minutes they were being weird
joe
the only time I've seen that is when using keepalived and vrrp instances and I still can't figure out why! and only windows boxen do it!
diomedes
http://pastebin.com/782453 is the script i run on the router
joe
s/do it/have the problem/
diomedes: you might want to just edit /etc/sysconfig/iptables after you do a save, for me it makes it easier
or rather a: iptables -L -n or a service iptables status
diomedes: as donavan mentioned it was probably and arp issue or gw address caching, issues depending on the os iirc
Lazydog
joe: that pastebin looks fine and would look any different then a save file except there wouldn't be any /sbin/iptables
would not that is
diomedes
joe only affecting 2 win xp boxes
and its stopped now, maybe just some windows fsckery.. will see if it does it again
joe
Lazydog: right, it's a matter of preference, for me it means only one place to edit...
thought I still hate some of the syntax issues that /etc/sysconfig/iptables seem not to like wrt to certain syntaxes
s/thought/though/
diomedes
hmm done it again
Lazydog
diomedes: cleaned up your file a little bit http://pastebin.com/782468
diomedes: try that one
