Lazydog
hello everyone
anyone here use ethereal?
Evolution
Lazydog: nope. I use wireshark
:-P
smallfries718
Hello all
I have a centos 3.8 server
Lazydog
Evolution: thnx i just installed it but cannot find the program
smallfries718
has 4GB or Ram
but only 3 are showing in meminfo
Evolution
smallfries718: intel board?
Lazydog: install wireshark-gnome
or look at rpm -ql wireshark output
vegbox444
I cant resolve names anymore after i installed nis
:(
Evolution
vegbox444: then fix nis.
vegbox444
i dont know how
Lazydog
Evolution: i would think that that would be installed auto if it is a dep. of wireshark
Evolution
Lazydog: it's not. wireshark runs fine on the command line if you're root.
wireshark-gnome is the gui interface.
vegbox444: that's a user issue, not a centos issue.
Lazydog
Evolution: ok you are correct. thnx for your help
smallfries718
Evolution, Asus
Evolution
smallfries718: motherboard is likely not passing ram amounts correctly to the system
smallfries718
Evolution, bios sees it

Evolution
smallfries718: set ram as a kernel option, or look for a bios upgrade to that board.
smallfries718
I was thinking it was the kernel , but it should support the 4gb with no kernel changes
mem=4gb ?
Evolution
smallfries718: it does. I have several 4G ram systems.
though none of them are asus, or crap.
smallfries718
I've seen a few stories about the Abit mobos
with ram issues
Evolution
yep. desktop mobo manufacturers cut corners.
because 99% of their end customers are idiots
Lazydog
Evolution: one more querstion if i may, what package holds dumpcap?
Evolution
Lazydog: yum provides dumpcap
Lazydog
sudo yum install dumpcap | No Match for argument: dumpcap
Evolution
(Action) smacks Lazydog
Lazydog
(Action) wondering why?
Evolution
did I say "yum install" ?
no. I said "yum *PROVIDES* "
Lazydog
(Action) is lost now
think i got what you are telling me
Evolution
Lazydog: lets assume for a moment that you've actually read the yum documentation.....
Lazydog
come on now... you don't believe that for a minute... do you. :)
range
Lazydog: It's a bug. Query the centos bug database.
Evolution
not at all unfortunately.
Lazydog
i don't use yum for any of the expanded stuff just the simple install remove search and update
Evolution: but i'm learning
smallfries718
Evolution, I like the attitude
range
I like big fries.
Evolution
smallfries718: quiet you. and fetch me a beer!
knotq
donavan: using the buslogic, it doesn't work. using lsilogic it does work on 4.3 or higher, thanks for your help
Evolution: and thank you for being a complete lack of help, and a general nuisence. without people like you, I might ask more questions instead of figuring it out myself.
Evolution
knotq: any time. <customer service voice>If you're not completely satisfied, please feel free to contact donavan, the day shift supervisor for a full refund of the purchase price of centos</customer service>
people who donate are granted much more friendly service, as they're actually helping to continue the project.
(Action) wanders off for a beer
knotq
having an faq on what i just said would probably help.
you can even verify it the second you get that esx license.
Evolution
indeed correct. you should put that on vmware's forums and faq.
range
knotq: There is a "Hardware database" on the centoswiki. If you'd like to submit an article there, contact me (mail address on wiki).
knotq
range: thanks
range
See wiki for details.
knotq
range, i'm going to Germany soon
range
*fear*
Lazydog
Evolution: found the problem. wireshark was looking in /usr/bin for dumpcap but dumpcap was installed in /usr/sbin so i created a symbolic link to it
knotq: why are you going to germany?
knotq
email sent.
range
Mail received.
knotq
Lazydog: job
range
(Action) wonders why knotq will visit Walldorf
Lazydog
knotq: germany is a nice country
knotq: i lived there for 15 yrs
knotq: what part of germany?
knotq
I don't know much about it, I'm 100% german, born in the U.S. with no cultural upbringing
Waldorf
Lazydog
interesting
knotq
I will probably bring the wife and child, and let them visit while I work
range
knotq: Do so,though that area isn't really that nice (except the river rhine).
Well, Heidelberg is closd.
close
knotq
I'm not quite sure about public transportation there either, Will i have to get a car, or can you get around easily on buses/subways?
I really know nothing about the area.
Lazydog
knotq: public trans is really good there. when they say a train or bus will arrive and depart it does normally ontime
knotq
Should be a lot of fun though. I've always wanted to visit my "homeland"
range
Nearest subway is in Frankfurt (which is quite a bit away). Buses I don't really know about, Walldorf isn't that bi of a town.
big
Lazydog
knotq: you mean the fatherland. :)
knotq
I guess so :)
Lazydog
i too am part german
range
knotq: Mannheim - being close - does have good public transportation.
Lazydog
m,aybe that is why i sdtayed so long
range
But Walldorf itself ..
knotq
well, I'll get around. I'm sure if I need a car, I can just get one.
Thinking I'd stay two weeks
give me an excuse to hang around for a couple weekends
range
knotq: Are you able to read german?
knotq
I am not, although you'd think I could given the ammount of emails I get in nothing but german.
brb, work
Lazydog
range: you in germany?
range
Yes.
Lazydog
where abouts?
range
Munich.
Lazydog
nice city. while in the army i was there once every 3 week for joint training with our german conterparts
3 months that is
of a week at a time
range
Yeah. Big beers :)
Zerberus
range: come on, beer? :)
range
And a really great area :)
Lazydog
hofbrau house was one place we alway stopped
range
Zerberus: If I had your regional beers, I'd also complain :)
Lazydog
then there was always the Oktober fest
range
Lazydog: Yeah, that sucks if you have to live and work here.
Zerberus
range: pils, not pullerwasser :þ
Lazydog
hehe
range
Zerberus: :)
knotq
range, thanks
i'm going to take off for the weekend, it was nice talking with you guys.
range
Zerberus: Hohenfelde Pils from Rheda-Wiedenbrück?
k31th: For the wiki article - I sent you a mail.
Oh, already away.
k31th: Forget it.
Zerberus
range: i had forgotten that in your deepest heart you are still feeling your OWL pampas roots
range
Zerberus: I grew up ~200m away from the König-Brauerei in Duisburg :)
Zerberus
range: o, that is a different place then
köpi
range
