Zarg: a simple kernel update *should* not make a difference for quotas.. but I've only got one system using them.
Zarg
o
mount: fs type usrquotan not supported by kernel
Fiver
usrquota is not an fstype, it's an option
bronze
hrrmmm... Does anyone have a clue how many Centos systems have been installed/built or how many copies of centos have been downloaded?
gig
I am looking for the kernel headers for version 2.6.9-34.ELsmp, anyone know where I can find them?
I've been googling, looking on mirrors, but I can't seeem to find them
donavan
bronze: we are like mcdonalds, we stopped counting
gig: why are you running a legacy kernel? much less looking for the headers?
gig
donavan: the machine I am on doesn't need to be updated, and what I am doing requires the kernel headers for that running kernel, yet I can't seem to find the package anywhere

tkrin
can anyone recommend an autoloader to use w/ Centos and Veritas Netbackup?
donavan
gig yum should be able to install them
bronze
donavan: yeah, but McDonal;ds stopped counting 'cause they couldn't keeps the numbers for the burger patties and rat patties seperated.
gig
donavan: I tried yum, but it installs a newer version
donavan
gig, dig deeper in the yum man page you can specifiy a package version
of course if you have yum updated, you may not be able to
gig
donavan: I've specified a package version, the onlything it comes up with is the newer version
donavan
bronze: we honestly don't have any idea anymore
gig
donavan: do you know anywhere I can just download the package?
bronze
ummm, so do what all the rest of the marketing depts do, pay someone to lie to you....
:-)
durn, we don't have the money for that!
donavan
with the update load pushed off to the 3rd tier network, we no longer control or have access to those statistics
bronze
you bas.. um, ok.
rats. i wanted to see howw the centos numbers looked compared to the "official" RH numbers.
donavan
bronze: theres that old netcraft report
bronze
maybe I'll just go watch south park..
donavan
http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2005/12/05/strong_growth_for_debian.html
bronze
:-)
donavan: nice graph, and look who made an appearance on the right... :)
donavan
right and that's 10 months old
bronze
I wonder if 1&1 and affinity are using centos yet..
dang, netcraft can't tell which distro a site is using.
just says "Linux"
donavan
doesn't look like they've done a distro survey in a while
bronze
maybe its getting too hard.
Anyone know of a way to determine which distro a site is using?
rado1
considering what this is: do you really mind???
I don't
I don't need to be in a distro pissing contest

bronze
rado1: is that a "you're off topic" hint?
rado1
no not at all
it's just the way things are
bronze
Nobody is bragging or complaining. I'm just trying to find some numbers
gig
donavan: found it and it worked fine.... ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/CentOS/4.3/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/kernel-smp-devel-2.6.9-34.EL.i686.rpm
rado1
donavan....member that user group bs last week?
findme
where is zoodax
donavan
usergroup?
rado1
ya...that I wrote that deal on
far as I'm concerned we run redhat under different colors
Evolution
user group?
is that like AA?
rado1
no ...just the mentality of the distro bs
tkrin
Don't you mean LA?
Evolution
(Action) toasts to his 'sober for 1 year' coin.
donavan
AA worked for you huh?
Evolution
absolutely. I'm down to only 2 cases of beer a day now.
and only 1 on the way to work
rado1
uh huh
bronze
rado1: Actually What I'm trying to learn about is how the economics are affecting the decisions on choosing a "commercial" Linux versus a "free" Linux
rado1
the only thing you gonna get from redhat is someone to talk to you
bronze
comparing RH and Centos is very useful because the feature parity between to two products neutralizes and decision factors based on technology differences
rado1
that does not mean they gonna fix your problems any better than they will get fixed on this irc
bronze
s/and/any
donavan
bronze in many cases economics has little to do with it
bronze
donavan: really> hows that?
donavan
some people can support their RHEL and/or Clone boxes better than RH itself.
bronze
not skeptical, curious
oh, OK.
rado1
did y'all take note on what ummm what's his name Ralph did today?
donavan
others who don't know jack sh*t and are trying to sell enterprise support to clients
rado1
Range
bronze
rado1: so to the degree that people percieve that RH support is too passive they may opt for centos or will they turn to IBM/HP/Other vendor w/support?
rado1
he set that kids whole bind up
donavan
bronze: many real companies demand someone upstream to bi**h at when sh*t breaks
rado1
I don't know if it is or not...someone like an ev or donavan have a better feel on that
donavan
bronze, I'm a software monkey, never used rh support
never needed to
bronze
It nice to have source!
rado1
I find it very hard to believe that well possibly a bit faster and maybe not even that would be the only edge RH would have over this crew
donavan
(Action) slips off now
rado1
donavan dammit
bronze
rado1: I tend to agree. cbetween commercial support versus "passionate" support, passion will usually win.
"I tend to agree" << what a pretentious ass!
:-)
rado1
I dunno...here...they try to ummm encourge the user to read...and by doing so ...that user is gonna be a better user
bronze
yeah, but the cattle prod hurts sometimes! :)
rado1
I really don't think bout it...I'm too busy doin my own thangs
bronze
send them to #$centos for paid support.. :)
rado1
and they could damn sure could use it
bronze
heh.
rado1
but somethings I have seen a lot of ...well couple times a day
friggin leeches
and it pisses the crew off and can't blame them a bit
bronze
Time to go burn my new Gparted-live-cd! (Now with full partition moving support!) [Look Ma, I'm a commercial! ]
rado1
lol
and I gotta get back after it
bronze
distractions of dubious value!
nite all!
Zarg
ok the file system is not support diskquotas how can I make the file system to support if it was supported befor
donavan
zarg, uname -a on your box?

donavan I wanna talk to you when you can k
AntonTakk
any of you happen to know if backup tapes hold data long enough to be a valid long-term storage media?
findme
AntonTakk, from what I know , yes. Define long term.
AntonTakk
uhm
relatively permanant archive
findme
AntonTakk, sort of , while you are still at the company will it work yes.
dtm
AntonTakk: "relatively permanent" is meaningless, sir
AntonTakk: it's an oxymoron
findme
well till he is with the firm will it work = relatively = yes
dtm
AntonTakk: i'm not sure if there's any medium that has a theoretical shelf life beyond 30 years, and no modern ones obviously have been tested that long
and that's only certain kinds
certain kinds of dvd and tape
AntonTakk
basically i want to store high-res scans of disc labels, thus I need a method of storage that works well with sitting on a shelf for years at a time
findme
AntonTakk, tape will do
AntonTakk
is it possible to add files to a tape, or even multiple archives?
(Action) hasn't used a tape drive in a long time
meh, nvm, i'll figure it out, gotta run, thanks for the info
dtm
AntonTakk: why do you want to use tape
DVD works too if it's stored properly. search slashdot.
fyi, beta xfs for rhel5 is here http://sandeen.net/rhel5_xfs/
rado1
hey now!
dtm
k.
rado1
you doin ok
dtm
rado1: yeah i'm tired coz i painted the garage. :)
rado1: how bout you
rado1
doin ok just no sleep
dtm
the Discovery Channel tells me that the next American superdisaster will be Mt Rainier erupting, so that means you're safe for a while
there in new orleans
rado1
lol
this is the sh*t hole of the nation
dtm
we got such a cool CD-RW standard from Mt Rainier, too. oh well, nature giveth and taketh away.
i should commemorate the impending doom by burning notches in a Mt Rainier format CD-RW, much as the supervolcano shall etch the cities and countryside for miles with jags of molten lava
(Action) ponders on how to somehow tie this in with centos....
and.......... do it.... on a centos system.
rado1
and you so fulla sh*t tonite!
dtm
kthx
rado1
uh huh
oh man
lmao
gawd I hate memory problems!
I don't mind when my memory goes...then it's adventure time!
dtm
ok.
rado1
dtm : you do have your tux on huh?
