nto using yum?
NOTevil
well, i can't even mv the file either. unless yum does better at replacing files?
donavan
what does "id" tell you?
NOTevil
id

probably need pastebin for "rpm -V net-tools"
NOTevil
rpm -V net-tools
S.5....T /bin/hostname
S.5....T /bin/netstat
it was hsphere that recommended reinstalling net-tools
hali

holy crap is that box connected to the internet

And next time keep the box up to date. You have been hacked, congratulations.
I bet that rpm -V procps spits out errors because of ps.
NOTevil

NOTevil
SunRayCafe: i'm just going to borrow it, then you can have it back. :)
orc_orc
src-afk: oh yeah -- that's right -- you provoked it, but I then shined it up for NOTevil with the discussion about cracked boxes ;) SunRayCafe: you are the most special person in channel to me, just like everyone else ;)
SunRayCafe
okay... I guess I need to figure out how to use sudo so I stop using root... will do that today...
still trying to build php 4.4.4... gotten much further along. Resolved several dependancies by updating. Current problem though is libmhash
can't seem to find that through yum in the centos repositories at all
according to yum, it doesn't exist. according to rpm, it isn't installed. So at least they're both pointing the same direction this time
Primus_
anyone here know much about samba? (the #samba guys seem to be all away)
dennisharrison
Primus_, what are you looking to do?
Primus_
I am having some performance issues with samba, when copying a file from a xp client, to a samba share, I get only 6000k/sec, however when copying the file over the same share, from samba to the same XP client, I get ~120,000k/sec, any reason why write performance to the share is so crappy?
read from the samba system can go as high as 200,000k/sec, and write never goes above 9000k/sec
dennisharrison
does the transfer crap out on large files?
Primus_
raid 0 on the XP client, and raid 5 on the samba server
I have only tested with files larger than 300 megs
I could try something really big, a couple gigs or so
dennisharrison
and they all finish eventually
Primus_
yup
trying a 2 gig file now, same speed
Iam sure write will be slower then read, since its only raid 0 on this end, but it shouldent be that much slower
gigabyte ethernet in between the systems as well
dennisharrison
ok I just wanted to make sure you didn't have failed transfers
what version of samba?
Primus_
how do I find that out?
nevermind, one sec
3.0.10-1.4E.9
centos 4 newest repo
dennisharrison
ok
try ftp between the two before we get too far into it
just wan to make sure the problem is samba
these are the only two machines you have?
Primus_
no
ftp is much faster
same download approx, and upload is noticably higher with ftp
dennisharrison
ok
have you played with your samba.conf yet?
Primus_
a little yeah
dennisharrison
or I think its smb.conf
Primus_
tis smb.conf
dennisharrison
and this was a problem before you touched it? ;p
Primus_
yes
was the same with the default config
have also had the same experience using gentoo as the host
so not saying its for sure a samba issue
but its something
dennisharrison
oh so gentoo to centos is a problem also?
but ftp works fine?
z00dax
is that a s/w raid ?
on the CentOS side ? does 'sar' have anything to say over the write period ?
Primus_
yeah
it is sw raid, but like I said, read speed (copying a file from the file server to xp client) is ~200.000 k/secf, while the opposite from xp to centos is 6000
I know sw raid is crappy, but not that crappy lol
z00dax
you do realise that read and write ops are not the same ?
Primus_
yes
I am not expecting the same
z00dax
run sar on the CentOS side, see if that has any interesting info to share
Primus_
not sure what sar is
dennisharrison
how did you configure your raid Primus_ ?
z00dax
yum install sysstat
man sar
Primus_
can you give me example usage of sar
z00dax
'sar'
engage eye sight, look at screen
Primus_
sar errors
dennisharrison
well
z00dax
pastebin.ca is on hand
dennisharrison
man sar
look at the network options
run it in the background and output to a file
then transfer your file over samba
z00dax
well, network be good- but also look at io and system stats
dennisharrison
true
Primus_
ok, I will mess with that for a bit
dennisharrison
you are thinking its his sw raid
z00dax
it is a raid-5...
dennisharrison
I have never setup a software raid before
no doubt ;p
mmcgrath
(Action) fears sars.
dennisharrison
lol
yeah ... raid 5 is overaided ...
god, thats a bad pun
just .. slap me or something
pony
(Action) gallops round and round the channel mercilessly stomping on dennisharrison repeatedly
Primus_
its possible, however I get the same transfer copying to a sing sata1 250 gig that I do sw raid 4xsata2 drives
single*
dennisharrison
pony, ok ... thats was excessive ;p
ok Primus_ , you have obviously done a lot of testing then ... what do you think the problem is?
check there
sar is going to help you determine where to look next my friend
Primus_
I am not sure, hence being here
75.91 MB/sec write speed to that array
according to hdparm anyway
whoops, nevermind that
thats read
z00dax
bonnie, get that - run that, should give you some realistic numbers
Primus_
k
z00dax
http://centos.karan.org/el4/extras/stable/i386/RPMS/repodata/repoview/bonnie++-0-1.03a-3.html maybe
donavan
quick and dirty, you can use dd also
just have to write past your memory and silly kernel cache/buffers, etc
Primus_
ok, well, i got some stuff to do anyway, could just be thats all I am goin to get, thanks for your help
donavan
did someone tell you smb sucks?
dennisharrison
hey rocky ;p
z00dax
Primus_: ok, that will be $250, how would you like to pay ?
Primus_
hah
in karma please
donavan
karma doesn't feed my 450 lb self
dennisharrison
man
thats merciless
he quit
