mattt
donavan: thanks anyway for your help
donavan
np mattt had to diagnose a problem when adequate information isn't shared
s/had/hard
mattt
understood, but i figure i better get bios checked out before i waste people's time trying to debug something
boudiccas
its Mr_T
:)
state your problem please?
MR_T
well
boudiccas
yes thank you
and you?
MR_T
when i do yum update i get
hehe fine :)
boudiccas
good :)
MR_T
after yum update:
not using ftp, http[s], or file for repos, skipping - 2.1AS is not a valid release or hasnt been released yet
Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: update
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: update

boudiccas
which version?
MR_T
4.4
i know from ubuntu that you need to change some things in sources.list but i cant find that in centos
donavan
MR_T: you running a control panel?
MR_T
i want to run a control panel ; Plesk
donavan
oic, I heard plesk is broken and fails to work on centos 4.4, I suggest you seek their support
MR_T
hmm ok..
i will try it there then :)
thanks for your time :) bb
donavan
another happy control panel user
JonathanD
heh
Evolution
(Action) installs cpanel, plesk webmin and ispconfig on his system so he can have control over all aspects of it.
zkorpio
hi everybody
anyone knows how to restart alsa service in centos pls?
Evolution
zkorpio: it's not a service. it's a kernel module.
zkorpio
upps sorry
Evolution
you could either unload the module and reload it, or reboot.
zkorpio
tks evolution but i do an lsmod and i dont find something like alsa
or is these snd_*
?
or are these snd_*
Evolution
those are the modules related to your sound, yes.
zkorpio
i try rmmod snd_* but it is dont recongnized :(
in mandrive usually i put service alsa restart and all was ready, (was it a script?)
Evolution
no clue. I haven't touched mandriva since it was mandrake around version 6.5
zkorpio
so if i put rmmod snd_* command it should be ok? or i need to do rmmod for each one?
Evolution
I tend not to use globbing when removing kernel modules. given your previous statements I'd guess rmmod doesn't approve of it either.
it would seem the easiest way for you would be to reboot.
zkorpio
i would like to reboot (easy way) but i am in a server station so i can not reboot everytime :(

Evolution
wtf?
you're wondering about sound on a server?
that's about as useless as a brick balloon.
zkorpio
jaja, its an small server
for my neighbourhoods
and for my learning
Nalfeshnee
rofl, Evolution.
Evolution
Nalfeshnee: quiet please, I'm busy rockin' out to my server music.
:-P
Nalfeshnee
snicker.
(Action) turns on some server music.
Big selection here... umm. well.. I lied.
I have no music on my server.
Evolution
that's a lie and you know it
cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
that's all the tunes you need!
Nalfeshnee
Lol.
I'm going to see if windows will boot.
zkorpio
so rmmod snd_* would be a good command?
Nalfeshnee
Watch it fail.
donavan
deprecated
Nalfeshnee
Mutter.
Lomar
hello, can you please tell me how I can upgrade the autoconf ?
dtm
Lomar: sudo yum install autoconf
Lomar
autoconf is installed and is the latest version.
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.57
this is the actually version
and I need 2.58
dtm
Lomar: i dunno, see centos extras
google it
does anyone else want to test a script that installs FC5 on centos
Evolution
Lomar: what version of centos are you using?
dtm
or on any other yum- and rpm-based distro
Lomar
Evolution 3
Evolution
Lomar: you're not going to get a new version.
not from centos.
Lomar
why not ?
Evolution
because that's the version that centos 3 has.
Lomar
damn
Evolution
and centos is basically version locked. fixes are backported, but the distro is built to be stable.
so 99% of the time, software versions will not change.
centos4 has a newer autoconf, but centos3 won't move beyond that one.
dtm
Lomar: that's why centos exists. it's a good thing.
i'm not sure how people tend to get ahold of centos systems and this irc channel and not know that, but ok :)
Evolution
dtm: because someone tells them that centos is stable, so they grab a copy. the way stability is achieved isn't overly clear unless they do research.
:-P
JonathanD
I got centos because I like pennies.
Evolution
(Action) has a penny bronzed and shipped to JonathanD
JonathanD
(Action) installs it on his laptop
erabbit
Evolution, frankly... thats how I got centOS.
JonathanD
hey look, I have cent on my laptop.
erabbit
I was going to install debian like usual, someone I know who works in linux box's all day said, no no check out centOS
Nalfeshnee
That's how I got it.:P
erabbit
so, I installed it, then did research
Nalfeshnee
Research, bah.
It's much easier to bug Evolution.
Evolution
heh
Nalfeshnee
He's known how to fix everything so far.
erabbit
Nalfeshnee, when I said "research" thats what I meant
haha
Nalfeshnee
All my problems, which of course are petty.
JonathanD
I tried it cause I heard lots of folks on ##linux talking about it, thought I'd check it out, and was impressed
Evolution
that's amusing... most of the folks we send toward ##linux have been on the recieving end of a blunt RTFM or a "not our problem"
Nalfeshnee
Snicker.
I don't know.
I still can't get the dual-booting issue to work.
Evolution
Nalfeshnee: it should work by default unless you set up some funky software raid.
Nalfeshnee
Nope.
Well.
I think it did this time.
Except, something inside windows actually fu*ked up.
Evolution
hmmmm, is it bad to have 5 beer bottles on your desk beside the keyboard?
Nalfeshnee
nothing with grub booting it, but some driver or something is going out of whack.
It just stays at the flashing _ .
Evolution
Nalfeshnee: pastebin your grub.conf
Nalfeshnee
I'm pretty sure it's not grub.
erabbit
I stopped dual booting linx / win
Nalfeshnee
I think it's windows.
erabbit
it always was a problem
Evolution
(Action) cleans off his desk to look less like an alcoholic.
Nalfeshnee: is windows on the same disk? or do you have 2 drives in there?
Nalfeshnee
Same disk.
(Action) is poor.
Evolution
yeah. dual boot should work out of the box then.
Nalfeshnee
Grub is written to the MBR.
Evolution
make sure you've got the chainloader line in there
Nalfeshnee
chainloader +1
JonathanD
*shrugs*
Nalfeshnee
Like I said.
Evolution
the "fix" is probably going to be booting into rescue mode on winders, running 'fixmbr'
which will wipe out grub's info.
Nalfeshnee
I don't think so.
Evolution
then load up the cent rescue disk, and grub-install.
Nalfeshnee
Windows was doing that before I installed grub.
Evolution
oh, yeah. you're screwed then.
Nalfeshnee
Rofl.
Thanks.:D
i'll reformat again later.
Evolution
ah, now my desk is bottle free!
(Action) opens a fresh one and wanders off
Nalfeshnee
Linux avi codec.
where do i find one?
Evolution
ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/
Nalfeshnee
ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/
For the player maybe?;)
