there was some yum command i could do to prevent repos from screwing with base packages what was it?
sos
protectbase
it's a yum plugin
jgw
sos: thank you so much
sos
yum-plugin-protectbase
that's name of it -- can install via yum (think it's in extras, could be wrong however...)
jgw
yup, i was able to google for "protectbase" and find the centos wiki page on the topic
thank you again :)

Zalamander
Hi. I upgraded to 4.4, and the bind upgrade stopped my running named, but didn't restart it. Is this on purpose, a bug, or something else amiss?
X-Rob
Worked for me(tm)
Albiet, there's now a /proc mounted in my named chroot jail
Zalamander
thanks, I guess it's something else going on then.
X-Rob
(have you rebooted?)

SunRayCafe
is there anywhere I can find the default path information for Apache, PHP and MySQL for the CentOS4 server?
Zalamander
yes, but named died before the reboot
smooge
Zalamander, there is some known issue that donovan mentioned earlier with bind. I do not know what it is
Zalamander
that is, it was shut down, and terminated normally during the upgrade
smooge hm, allright. Maybe this is it, though X-Rob had no such problem.
smooge
it doesnt seem to be an everyone occurs problem :/
donavan
Zalamander: there is some sort of problem, do you have other machines available?
that need upgrading and are running bind chrooted
orc_orc
martintoy: gpled My issue on bind was an artifact of a failing update -- see: https://bugzilla.centos.org/view.php?id=1483
Zalamander
donavan yes, one other. I was planning to switch the service to another machine during the upgrade
orc_orc
Zalamander: your issue as well is possibly this -- the /proc in the jail i sprobably unrelated
Zalamander
ok thanks
orc_orc
smooge: as to why not all encounter it, there is a transaction ordering aspect in play
smooge
ah is there a fix.. I am 2000 emails behind in reading at the moment :)
orc_orc
smooge: the fix is in the link I just posted
smooge
(Action) is thinking of moving his FC3 system to Centos-4 for fun and profit.. LIVE!
orc_orc, thanks.. missed it when i asked
(Action) reads the bug.. oh so its not a bind problem but a yum problem.. or did I look at the wrong link
orc_orc
only 2000? slacker - As I have labored to solve this bug for you all day, it looks as though I have: echo "17463 - 13567" | bc
smooge
wow.. I need to get on more lists.. I havent had time to do more than glance at gmail for the last 2 weeks.. so 2000 was 2 weeks of email
orc_orc
smooge: you got it -- bind is the symptopm (actually a failing distcc was before that, but that is site local, which distcc failed for want of dns)
smooge: my backlog was at zero at 2300 local last nite
donavan
Zalamander: can you pastebin the output of " rpm -qa --last |egrep 'bind|yum|sqlite' "
smooge
orc_orc, so you get every centos systems logwatch?
orc_orc
smile
only if people have both the proper aliases entry AND the proper procmail pass code -- the rest are devnulled

Zalamander
donavan yes, I have all of those packages. One moment
donavan
Zalamander: the order is what I'm intersted in
Zalamander
yes, I was just checking that myself in yum.log
orc_orc
donavan: this shows the order you are interested in seeing better: rpm -qa --last |egrep 'bind|yum|sqlite' | sort +6 -r | sort +3
well -- taht needs a am/pm tweak -- almost
Zalamander
donavan http://rafb.net/paste/results/xOR1K267.html
again, my symptom is that named didn't restart successfully during the update, but afterwards started manually fine.
donavan
curious
Zalamander
It looks like it was happy again after sqlite was installed.
orc_orc
smooge: the reason the issue was expressed in the named, is that the bind-libs and bind got off sync here
donavan
Zalamander: did you reboot at any time?
Zalamander
donavan yes. named came up at boot without error
(reboot was after the upgrade, after restarting named the first time manually)
donavan
for the record, here is mine -- same repository -- just performed before the public release and pointer migration: http://rafb.net/paste/results/F2F9K234.html
Zalamander
I had an upgrade yesterday apparently freeze halfway through, but after waiting a while, then killing it, cleaning up, and running another upgrade, it seems that the first upgrade did in fact finish, but stopped reporting to stdout.
not sure if that's related to the sqlite issue
donavan
hmm, okay
orc_orc
Zalamander: the non-report to stdout is not surprising -- scriptlet sub-terrainean tools were borked by the bash changing underneath it
Zalamander

devhen
where does up2date store the rpms while its downloading them, before theyre installed?
rado1
wow 150 kb/s dload on the torrent
donavan
devhen: use your 'man find' skills
orc_orc
devhen: words of one syllable: up too date is not for cen toes -- yum is, as it is hard 'nuf to get right
todays issue proves that
devhen
yeah, i just switched over to yum i wanna delete all the rpms that up2date d/l before i gave up on it
/var/spool/REDHAT or something?
donavan
devhen, I honestly dont' know, I haven't used up2date since RHN days
on my 1 year of RH WS 3 that I licensed
devhen
thanks anyway donavan ill find em
donavan
find in /var is a good starting place
devhen
doesnt really matter just bothers me to have all those packages sitting there
i was hoping yum would use the same folder and not have to redownload the packages that up2date got but no
donavan
if up2date downloaded them, they should be installed already
rado1
I think that up2date and yum use the same files...donavan? orc??
LuvRedheads
I was hoping people would start using man and other sources of documentation but no .......
devhen
donavan, no it downloads first then isntalls
donavan
rado1: no
I'm sure up2date has no knowledge of /var/spool/cache/yum (or whatever the path is)
devhen
they obviously use different folders for their rpm spool cos yum didnt notice that up2date already d/l half of these
donavan
LuvRedheads: I want a pony
pony
donavan your pony: http://tinyurl.com/ms4yy
donavan
woot, I finally get a pony

adam
ahh found the file .. its /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources
what is in your file?
mine is empty
can you copy the text in your "/etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources" file? I really need it ..
donavan
adam: install the centos-yumconf you'll get your up2date stuff back
adam
hmm, im kind of scared.. cuz yum works good
would like to just copy from your sources file..
donavan
NO
adam
thats what the error was, that the file is missing
why not?
dan__t
hi.
so mydns blew up. if anyone cared.
donavan
of course it did dan__t, during your upgrade?
did you break yum adam ?
adam
hey dan, can you post the text in your "/etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources" file.. mine got blown away and need it to fix up2date ...

donavan

adam

rado1

just as clean as can be
donavan
rado1: karma
adam
