Iam8up
what does it mean when you just isntalled centos and it locks up after abuot 2 seconds after getting to the login prompt
so_
bad hardware, incompatible hardware? tried booting in runlevel 1 it still does the same thing?
donofrioatwork
Iam8up: try centos livecd - then if it locks you know its your hardware
Iam8up
i know it's not incompatible hardware - identical system works just fine
but that's a good idea, the live cd...i'll try that brb
Evolution
Iam8up: it means you need to run memtest
Iam8up
Evolution - already did that, 25 passes without any errors
Evolution
Iam8up: you have to let memtest run for A WHILE ( I recommend a day) to get reliable results.
Iam8up
25 passes is about 36 hours
Evolution
Iam8up: it also means that you need to check for other hardware failure, smartctl the hard driver etc.
Iam8up: no. it's not.
it depends entirely on speed how long it takes.

Iam8up
started it yesterday morning, woke up about noon and stoped it
Evolution
for you it might be 36 hours.
(Action) fails to care.
Iam8up
you said a day
i did it for more then a day
Evolution
Iam8up: would you like a cookie?
Iam8up
how bout a fruit roll up?
donavan
you forgot the pony
Evolution
I did forget the pony.....
Iam8up
how bout a fruit by the foot?
Evolution
Iam8up: how about you take a break for a bit, until you're ready to ask a concise question backed up by detail instead of the vague sh*t you bring in here.
so far today we led off with "what makes cron crash" and now we have "why does my computer lock up"
(Action) lets his frustration show
donavan: your pony isn't here?
donavan
ohh, I rebooted the pony server last night
if the java worked properly :P
Iam8up
what makes cron crash <--- because i know nothing else about cron?
why does my computer lock up <-- right after booting, again, because i have identical hardware functioning on the same os in the same situation beside it?
Evolution
Iam8up: and yet you've made no attempt to think for yourself, or google. Every time you ask a question we have to ask you to look in the logs, provide detail etc.
Iam8up
i looked in the logs, which totally didn't help, and i told you /var/log/cron had no information to help me
smooge
(Action) wonder if they have information that would help the helpers?
Iam8up
i mean...who the hell knew cron would put logs in cron and messages?
Evolution
um... sane people?
pony
Hi
smooge
(Action) realizes that he is definately going to have to lower the expected audience of his book
Hi pony. How are you
so_
I suspect you are attributing your crash to cron, when in fact it may be something cron runs, or something else entirely :P
smooge
(Action) pets the pony

pony
(Action) rubs her head against smooge
Evolution
so_: oh dear god don't get him started again... we've been down that road already....
so_
anyways, not much help to bed had with next to no info :P
Evolution
it's like attempting to explain thermodynamics to a retarded 4 year old with ADD and a hearind disorder.

GitRdone
heh
smooge
(Action) decides to train pony to be like the horses of Diomedes
pony
Hi
donavan
hi pony
pony
(Action) looks over
so_
does pony know about the glue factory yet?
pony
(Action) backs away
Evolution
(Action) goes to pull a pork loin off the grill and carve up some sour dough
donavan
(Action) gives pony an apple and some sugar cubes
pony
(Action) moves towards donavan
(Action) nuzzles donavan
smooge
(Action) gives pony a carrot,
(Action) got his job offer at the university
(Action) gets an apple and some sugar cubes
dtm
smooge: \o/
Evolution
smooge: university work?
looking for something cushy? :-P
smooge
no
it will let me do more Stig stuff I can share
Evolution
ah
smooge
I put it down as being a rat on the boat of DOE. I sense I had better get off now
Evolution
heh
funny how people seem to think that way
we got a "pep talk" from our contract boss friday that basically said "at least 3 of you are gone, but don't worry, I'm moving to NC, so I'm covered"
smooge
Oh yeah
Love that kind of feel
I have been joking that the day after my clearance is terminated I am going to go off and do all the things I havent been able to do.
like blog..
Evolution
smooge: so... how do you like cuba this time of year?
:-P
smooge
oh no.. though I don't have an SCI.. I still have to get clearance to leave the country even to Mexico for the next 50 years
so_
I'm not so sure I like cuba...the weather...not so good right now
Evolution
smooge: I didn't mean a VOLUNTARY trip.. I meant to gitmo... people with a clearance and a blog are not looked highly upon....
I'm a contractor, not a GS civilian, but it's been "recommended" that I keep mine strictly technical, and with no discussion of work...
I took loads of heat over my "I nearly have cac working!" even though there's a mailing list devoted to it, peopled with military and corporate security folk, all public.
smooge
oh yeah.. I am not allowed to even do that
Evolution
yeah, I get some wiggle room because I'm not attached to anything operational.. it's all training here.
speaking of....
smooge
That is one of the big benefits of going to work for the university. I can work on Centos, Fedora-Legacy, and write technical documents that wont need a classification review
Evolution
(Action) checks on his V for Vendetta torrent....
smooge
what is your blog?
so_
top secret
Evolution
cognitive-dissonance.org
there's nothing overly fancy there.
it started as a test for a decent CMS system
I registered the domain because work keeps me intimately in touch with the concept....
smooge
Ah I am going to start on that too.. I haventy done anything with my website after I left LANL
Evolution
when are you taking posession of your new job?
smooge
the 21st
GOD I wanted a CAC reader!
that worked
Where is the mailling list for that.
tomh
hey, anyone know how i can add files so that /usr/bin/ld can correctly find them?
Evolution
tomh: /etc/ld.so.conf
smooge: http://www.linuxnet.com/musclecard/index.html
tomh
mm ok
what should i add there?
Evolution
tomh: poke around in that file, and the included files.
/etc/ld.so.conf.d/
tomh
it has only one line
Evolution
tomh: look in the includes as well.
if you can't figure it out from the examples there.. you don't belong around source code :-P
mostly you pass the path to the libs
tomh
i dont know c
i need to add a few libs tough
Evolution
tomh: such as?
tomh
/usr/lib/libpng.so.3.1.2.7
and /usr/lib/libpng.so.3
Evolution
tomh: uh... you don't need to edit anything to have those picked up
tomh
what i do then?
Evolution
tomh: you likely don't have the development package for libpng installed.
tomh: what is it you're trying to build?
tomh
ruby-gd
Evolution
I'd recommend using yum to look for the libpng development package, as well as gd-devel
tomh
kk
thanks
that helped me
Evolution
sure.
(Action) cracks open a tasty sunday beverage
IBC cream soda!
donavan
kinda late to start that
Evolution
mmmmmmmmm
donavan: I'm going alcohol free today
being that it's sunday and all
I even considered going to church today
donavan
friday night and saturday did you in?
Evolution
I didn't go.... but I considered it.
donavan
you seem nervous
Evolution
heh nah
smooge
(Action) goes off to answer a technicians question about why I havent made a standalone DVD of RHEL-4
with his particular customizations he needs for his department.
z00dax
smooge: how do you do the customisations ? updates.img ?
smooge
well ours are all in a kickstart and some executables we add to ask the user what he wants to do with the machine
z00dax
ah humm.
smooge
what network this machine is
do you want to use the centralized kerberos, active directory, etc servers
that kind of stuff.
the tech's customizations are more like 'I want to have you un-tar these applications during the install so that the guy has his cad program ready'
Dysk
Does kickstart allow you to set arbitrary configuration file lines?
If there's some configuration that can't be done within the install program?
smooge
yes.. you can do a lot of questions in the %pre
Dysk
Sounds like the tech wants a ghost image more than a customized install
er.
smooge
yes.. this shop is 99% windows so most of the techs want ghost images
the development of the stuff has been mostly been done by 1 person before me with me helping him get things more solid versus hack-of-the-week
basically due to certain corporate conditions.. we have ended up using RPM triggers as a replacement of cfengine
