Z_God
hmm, it seems the default kernel misses isa pnp support, which I guess is what I need
hmm, it seems I need some more packages to be able to compile the kernel itself
make menuconfig works, but after that, make complains about missing files
Zerberus
what exactly did you do?
you got the kernel src.rpm?
Z_God
probably not :S
I only checked for kernel-devel
Zerberus
will not work then
Z_God
trying 'yum search kernel src'
Zerberus
you can't get the kernel src.rpm using yum, not that directly
Z_God
ah, k
is there a special reason for that?
Zerberus
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/updates/SRPMS/kernel-2.6.9-34.0.2.EL.src.rpm
but please! learn how to properly deal with it
Z_God
thanks

Zerberus
there was a long thread about it on the mailing list
Z_God
are there any docs I need to read?
I have compiled kernels before, not on CentOS though
Zerberus
you can search the mailing list archive
and apply your .config changes within the kernel.spec file to get again an rpm kernel
Z_God
hmm, the spec seems to be in the usual place, but I'm wondering how to add my .config changes to it :)
I'll check the mailing list
phlite_
hey guys, downloaded driver for centos, what are the folders largesmp, smp, and up ? thx
Zerberus
Z_God: and don't do such things as root ;)
phlite_: SMP is for multpi processor / core, UP is uni processor
Z_God
heh, I was indeed doing it as root
any specific reason why not btw?
or just the general one? ;)
phlite_
Zerberus: difference between largesmp, and smp ?
smooge
and largesmp is when you have more than 8 or 32 processors
Zerberus
Z_God: one wrong instruction within the spec file (accidentally) and your system is dust
Z_God
ah, to be honest, that's not a big problem for me :)
phlite_
ahh thx
Z_God
did the install yesterday and didn't really do anything with it yet
also no nfs mounts or something like that that could screw up other systems
donavan
and rob ourselves of this wholesome entertainment?
Z_God
I found the tutorial btw, I think I should be on my way now :)
Hobbes`
thanks Zerberus , there was an old xfree86-config rpm which was causing the metacity dependency ... got rid a bunch of unwanted libraries too!
Zerberus
ok
Hobbes`
is there any way to check if there are any stray libraries present that aren't used by any other package ?
maybe just a list of packages that don't have any other packages depending on them
Dysk
I'm not even sure that RPM makes a distinction between library packages and end-use packages.
phlite_
what do you do if /etc/modprobe.conf already has an entry for scsi_hostadapter (sata_nv) and you need to make an alias: alias scsi_hostadapter 3w-9xxx.ko

Dyson__
afair you only need a scsi_hostadapter alias for your boot-controller?!?
Zerberus
Hobbes`: you may run a script against all files in the system and check "rpm -qf </path/to/file>"
phlite_
Dyson__: atm the kernel doesn't see my raid controller
Dyson__
phlite_: did you try kudzu?
*duck*
phlite_
Dyson__: whats kudzu?
Dyson__
:)
hardware-detection
Zerberus
phlite_: you can set a scsi_hostadapter2
phlite_
Dyson__: can you walk me threw that?
Zal
I am researching in the LVM HOWTO (again), this time trying to find out if a physical volume can be split over multiple volume groups. I haven't found anything so far. Is this possible?
Dyson__
phlite_: just call kudzu -s
Zerberus
phlite_: /etc/init.d/kudzu start
Dyson__
phlite_: it should update your modprobe.conf
phlite_
Dyson__: whoa sweet it worked :) thx
Dyson__
phlite_: np
Zerberus
phlite_: run now mkinitrd to get a new initrd.img with the additional module enshipped
Dyson__
if it already booted there shouldn't be any issues :)
kwahgib
Hi, i'd like to enable novell netware network filesystem support in centos 4.3, what's the recommended way to do so? Using the kernel from centosplus (i heard it's in there) or compiling a module from the kernel sources of the current kernel?
phlite_
Zerberus: yes i ran mkinitrd, do i need to do anything else?
Dyson__
I guess the 3w-card if only additional storage
phlite_
Dyson__: ya its my big disk :)
Dyson__
:)
Zal
in other words, can one Volume Group use some of the Physical Extents of of a Physical Volume, while another Volume Group uses other Physical Extents on the same Physical Volume?
Dyson__
Zal: a volume group is an aggregate of multiple physical volumes
Zerberus
phlite_: nothing more to get the controller be detected initially
Dyson__
Zal: however, a physical volume is only a partition. So you can split one disk into multiple physical volumes and add these to a different volume groups
Zal
Dyson__ right, ok, thank you
phlite_
Zerberus: shouldn't dmesg report something about seeing the raid now?
Zerberus: i'm not sure what the device id is
Dyson__
phlite_: hmm... /dev/sdX :)
phlite_: where X is between a and z :)
Zerberus
phlite_: dmesg should report the controller to be detected, as well the raid, whether it is mounted depends on your fstab
phlite_
Dyson__: ya lol
Zerberus: shouldn't i be able do do insmod 3w-9xxx at this pt?
Zerberus
phlite_: the initrd.img causes the module to be loaded
phlite_
Zerberus: hmm
Zerberus: when i do lsmod i don't c it
Zerberus
phlite_: did you already reboot after creating the new initrd?
phlite_
Zerberus: no
Dyson__
phlite_: and (even more important) did you put the initrd in the right place?
Zerberus
phlite_: ok, don't know exactly what you are trying to
phlite_
Dyson__: ya its sitting in /boot/initrd-2.6.9-34.ELsmp.img
Dyson__
phlite_: k k
phlite_: I just asked to be sure :)
phlite_
Zerberus: trying to see that the kernel sees the controller then mount my raid
Zerberus
you missed 2 kernel security updates
phlite_
Zerberus: by seeing that the kernel sees it, i should find out the device id
Zerberus
phlite_: modprobe 3w-9xxx should do
phlite_
FATAL: Error inserting 3w_9xxx (/lib/modules/2.6.9-34.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/scsi/3w-9xxx.ko): Invalid module format
Vilela
Is there a project like CentOS, to rebuild SuSE Enterprise? couldn´t find out in google
Dyson__
*shiver*
SuSE?
phlite_
Zerberus: wrong format of driver or something?
Dyson__
(Action) runs
phlite_
suse owns ;)
lancelan
Vilela, why bother when we have CentOS ;)
joe
speaking of 3ware stuff. Who has 3dm2 64bit builds that work properly?
Jenkens
Dyson
joe: i'd like a 32-bit build that works properly...
joe
Dyson: well that too :)
donavan
I think dyson wants a pony
pony
donavan your pony: http://tinyurl.com/ms4yy
(Action) twitches an ear
donavan
no no not me
range
dyson wants a pony?
pony
range your pony: http://tinyurl.com/ms4yy
range
The pony is broken.
Vilela
lancelan, there must be something different there, and diversity is something we always win with.
range
I don't want a pony.
pony
range your pony: http://tinyurl.com/ms4yy
donavan
Vilela: suse prevents such activities because they aren't a real open source vendor
Dyson
no no
Vilela
donavan, I can´t understand how can they prevent such thing...
Dyson
i actually *want* some StorEdges and a QLogic HBA
donavan
Vilela: its off topic in -- but the short story -- their license agrement prevents such activities.
range
donavan: It does?
donavan
seek out z00dax for full details in #centos-social
phlite_
is there a way besides /etc/redhat-release to find out which release of centos i have? i installed with openfiler
Vilela
donavan, I can´t see how a license in this world can put itself over GPL.
darky
does anyone have a current list of the 4.4 packages that will be used? (from what is known at this time from RH)
donavan
no darky, only what was released as RHEL 4 update 4 beta
perry753-work
does anyone know the number of updates since CentOS 4.3?
donavan
perry753-work: the answer you seek is in the updates directory in the 4.3 tree
Dyson
erm... 182? :)
perry753-work
where can I check?
donavan
Dyson: ?
LuvRedheads
42
perry753-work
42?
or 182
lol
Dyson
donavan: that's what ls -1 /install/centos/4/updates/RPMS | wc -l said
darky
donavan: is there a way to access the list without having a rhn login?
Evolution
darky: centos doesn't require a RH login....
donavan
darky: poke around in here http://dev.centos.org/centos/4.4beta/os/
perry753-work
http://mirrors.versaweb.net/centos/4.3/updates/i386/RPMS/?
are those updates since 4.3/
donavan
Dyson: where did you get that path?
Dyson
donavan: ermm... wrong :)
donavan: it was /install/centos/4/updates/i368/RPMS
donavan: and it is the local mirror of centos :)
perry753-work
hey... can you check for 4.3?
is http://mirrors.versaweb.net/centos/4.3/updates/i386/RPMS/ the link for ALL the updates since 4.3 release?
phlite_
which kernel came with 4.3?
Evolution
2.6.9-34
donavan
LuvRedheads: where did you get 42?
Evolution
from THGTTG
ubijtsa
-42 is the beta2 kernel
