JonathanD
to celebrate :P
donavan
gentoo's release?
JonathanD
no
detach-
they allow these wallops to happen?
JonathanD
one year at work, thats what
detach-
?
bot?
orc_orc
detach-: something that needs to die, anyway
detach-
looks like an oldschool floodbot
ki2k
i cant believe people still attempt to use floodbots

detach-
why would people want to flood this channel?
hughesjr
orc is in the house :)
ki2k
cause they're leet
detach-
lol
wtf just ban grps*.vodaphone.hu
orc_orc
detach-: I have tried a pattern, but it is not working
detach-
root@?
orc_orc
detach-: a donavan ban, in which I concur
detach-
lol
.
nanderson
does anyone have a usb200M adapter working in centos 4.x?
detach-
YEA u the man
hughesjr
orc_orc: you are having a party ....
detach-
it seems it's always grps58.vodafone.hu anyway
orc_orc
the syntax that works is: /ban *!@*.vodafone.hu
detach-
what about *!*@gprs*.vodafone.hu
orc_orc
detach-: that syntax is not recognized by this channel server
detach-
i saw that pattern coming
that's weird
(Action) shrugs... i'm still in the galaxynet 1999 days
hughesjr
I was wondering where all the upgraders were ... they found us :)
detach-
(Action) raises hand for a vote - centos kernels that perform optimally under vmware please
donavan
what the heck happened to all the /bans?
orc_orc
donavan: I reinstated your pet ban -- I have the list -- want it? (it turns out that the chanserv will only carry 15 or so

boudiccas
chanserv removed them
what you need is a good eggdrop bot in here
donavan
15? since when?
bobdrad
excuse me - how do I register a nickname? "/motd" is returning nothing
detach-
wha? eggdrops still exist? :-P
boudiccas
yes :)
detach-
orc_orc: you ban's gone.. smae guy's back
oh no.. not the same
LuvRedheads
pffffffttttt
orc_orc
donavan: nfi -- it overflowed when I was hunting that .hu --
donavan
hmmm
bobdrad
I just installed CentOS and did a "yum update". I am trying to minimize my config so I disabled several daemons. Now I can't seem to mount /dev/cdrom, it always says "already mounted", yet "mount" doesn't show it. Any clues?
detach-
just a guess.. did you turn off autofs
donavan
orc_orc: that ones kinds of mean
bobdrad
No, but nice guess :-)
orc_orc
donavan -- that pattern is copiously in the prior set -- just reinstating some of them
detach-
bobdrad: then turn it off and give it a shot
donavan
orc_orc: I had a /20 banned not a /16
orc_orc
donavan: true enuf
bobdrad
Where should autofs be mounting it? And is there some reason that would fail?
donavan
the /20 is owned by the same poor outfit
I've /msg'd a freenode staffer :)
orc_orc: do you have the chanserv message?
bobdrad
fstab sez "/dev/hda /media/cdrecorder auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0"
orc_orc
donavan: /me has it in log -- just a minute
donavan
thx orc_orc he may ask
bobdrad
(yet /media/cdrecorder is empty)
donavan
s/he/it\/she\/he/
detach-
bobdrad: just disalbe autofs, maybe give your system a reboot and try mouting manually
bobdrad
Dang - you right! I stopped autofs and now can mount it. OK, so what is wrong with my autofs config, and why doesn't this mount ... automatically?
detach-
(Action) stares at orc_orc
he's the expert
wow somebody gave lilo a stitch huh
orc_orc
detach-: I assure I approach chanop'ing with much frustration that /msg chanserv help (almost any command you may think of) is empty
bobdrad
Anybody hazard a guess as to what's wrong with my autofs config and how to fix it?
orc_orc
detach-: ha ha, little blue space animal and Hawaiian brat
bobdrad: we do not like speculation and guesswork, nor unresearched questions here -- doco on this and many other interesting centos topics is at: http://www.centos.org/docs/
detach-
i always thought autofs was evil
tuxus
(cough, cough) excuse me.... I'm in the middle of a "yum update" and it's installing the files now. Stupid me - I'm gonna need this laptop in a while. Could I abort this install WITHOUT scr***ng my system?
bobdrad
Trust me, I searched FAQs, Forums, google, etc before coming to you, I'm not just being lazy. I'm new to CentOS, but reasonably expert with Solaris.
orc_orc
tuxus: no
tuxus
orc_orc: that's NOT what I wanted to hear....
orc_orc
bobdrad: which of the doco did you read for its autfs discussion, to which I referred?
tuxus: life sux - then you die
bobdrad
Pointer? The world is full of docs...
orc_orc
bobdrad: we do not like speculation and guesswork, nor unresearched questions here -- doco on this and many other interesting centos topics is at: http://www.centos.org/docs/

nasty Slow lair hiss leach
detach-
why the fu*k are people pronouncing fsck as eff-sock
tuxus
because f-suck sounds even more stupid?
detach-
grr
JonathanD
heh
vknecht
hi
bobdrad
I guess the real question is: when I do "Add/Remove Software", where does it expect to find the CD mounted? Please?
vsingh165
hello all
im new to centos
i dont have it
but my IT teacher needs a free copy of redhat
is that basically what centos is?
bobdrad
i.e. what's a standard fstab autofs entry for /dev/cdrom typically to look like? I'm guessing some RPM messed it up.
vsignh167: Sort of. Read http://www.centos.org, it's pretty clear.
hali
vsingh165: centos has nothing to do with redhat... it is a recomplied verson of "a enterprise linux distribution" ;)
LuvRedheads
if your IT teacher can't figure it out .. might wanna think about changing teachers
vknecht
is there some problem with CentOS 4.4 DVD torrent ?
bobdrad
Can somebody please take 10 seconds, and cut/paste their /etc/fstab entry for /dev/cdrom here? It would help me a lot.
quilon
does anyone know what is the command line to setup networking ?
bobdrad
quilon: if you don't need it to be permanent, you can use ifconfig, e.g. "ifconfig eth0 netmask 255.255.0.0 broadcast 172.16.255.255 172.16.0.25" and then "ifconfig eth0 up". Be sure to read the man page.
quilon
thanks bobdrad
dberry
bobdrad, what problem are you having with /dev/cdrom?
vsingh165
@hali: so this isn't based on redhat ur sayin
vknecht
(Action) keeps getting "Tracker announce still not complete 59 seconds after starting it" when trying to get 4.4 DVD torrent
vsingh165
(Action) has an urgent question
vknecht
could it be some firewall problem ? I think I set up that right (both on router and in iptables)
vsingh165
what is this os based on really
dberry
is there a way to turn on debugging on multipathing? there is nothing in my logs
bobdrad
If the autofs daemon is running, it won't mount with my current configuration. So suggestion was I turn autofs off. But then "Add/Remove Software" doesn't work. My fstab line looks like: " /dev/hda /media/cdrecorder auto pamconsole, exec, noauto, managed 0 0"
vknecht
vsingh165, RHEL source RPM packages
vsingh165
o ic
because my IT teacher wants to learn redhat along with us
dberry
bobdrad, that is what mine looks like
vsingh165
he has the redhat bible
vknecht
vsingh165, CentOS would be a good choice; the manual is actually the same ;-)
vsingh165
ic
bobdrad
Odd. And if you insert your CD, it mounts at /media/cdrecorder? I have disabled a few daemons in my attempt to minimize my system to host VMware exclusively (well, almost)
vsingh165
thanks for all your help guys gtg
dberry
yeah /media/cdrecorder
vsingh165
cya
bobdrad
Can you think of any other daemon that might get involved in mounting it besides autofs?
vknecht
ok, so no one actually getting 4.4 DVD torrent who could confirm it's working well for him ?
bobdrad
Also, strangely if I do mount it at /media/cdrecorder (manually) Add/Remove software still can't find the CD. Can I make Add/Remove software look someplace specific for the DVD?
If I had strace, I could just spy on what the process is doing, but I have to add that software ;-)
tuxus
whoo hooo - "yum updated" to CentOS 4.4 completed in record time, and no errors. A+ for the CentOS team!
range
bobdrad: You really want to use yum, as Add/Remove Software doesn't really work anymore when you did your first update. If you have network access, that is.
quilon
bobdrad, how do I get the networking info permanent?
range
quilon: Edit the ifcfg-interfacename files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
menthol616
hey i need to know which rpm has the binaries useradd and groupadd
quilon
thanks range
bobdrad
quilon: I imagine you look at System Settings/Network and edit an interface to give it the characteristics you want. Haven't done this myself yet except at install time.
range
menthol616: "yum provides useradd".
vknecht
bobdrad, maybe you need to setup your /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo so that [base] points to baseurl=file:///media/cdrecorder/SOMETHING
dunno what the SOMETHING would be though, never used CD/DVD to install stuff after install...
bobdrad
OK, how do I know the name of the package I want yum to add? In this case, I want to add what Add/Remove software calls "Server/Web server". My plan was to add it from the CD, then run yum to update the bits.
vknecht
otherwise you could just "rpm -Uvh /media/cdrecorder/...", or maybe rather "yum localinstall /media/cdrecorder/..."
bobdrad
OK, I guess I can see how to get the RPM names out of Add/Remove. I'll give that a go. Thanks.
menthol616
I dont have yum availible, could someone who has it run that command and let me know what rpm useradd and usergroup reside in?
vknecht
useradd is in shadow-utils
bobdrad
shadow-utils-4.0.3-60.RHEL4
menthol616
thankyou
LuvRedheads
rpm -q --whatprovides /usr/sbin/useradd
range
No yum available? On CentOS?
quilon
anyone know where I need to setup the routing info ?
torbjorn
quilon: use ip route
quilon: use system-config-network to permanent set network settings
madtux1
Hi folks - are the DVD torrents for 4.4 and 3.8 broken?
quilon
thanks tojoe
oops thanks torbjorn
torbjorn, I don't have system-config-network as I am running a bare essential centos VM on xen. so I guess I need to manually edit config files
