bish0p
sorry if this is a touchy subject.. i was just wondering if it was a mistake or planned.. either way i can handle it
orc_orc
Milan's thread and his ticket, and all the rest are well and long known to me
bish0p: file a bug in the centos tracker; provide the compiler, and we will use it -- otherwise there is nothing to discuss ... yet
bish0p
i've got a lab of centos boxes that us VMware to provide the windows environment .. because I don't want to manage a lab of windows boxes
orc_orc: what do you mean by provide the compiler?
orc_orc
bish0p: then you have an incentive to ask your vendor, downstream from centos, to provide tools if they hope for a given behaviour from tehir upstream
dberry
anyone know of a way to rescan the scsi bus?
orc_orc
I think it was bug 1402 /me looks
bish0p
orc_orc: i really think you are confused as to what I'm talking about
rado1
is the msg list down?
orc_orc
bish0p: how does your issue differ from http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1402

rado1
dberry: enjoyed talking w/you the other nite
dberry
me too
rado1
seems like no msgs came in from the list in long time
bish0p
orc_orc: similar issue.. but not what I came here for
grantm
rado1: i received a message 10 minutes ago

Hello, I have a Dell precision w/ 2 xeon processors 3.06 GHz. Which .iso do I use. I can't find any mention of Xeons. It is ia32 bit, but I just don't know if Xeon is an x86 processor.
smooge
pats4me, the ia32 is the correct for xeon's
pats4me
is that a question?
smooge
so it was meant to be an answer
pats4me
I think it means intel arcitecture
32 bity
Dyson
pats4me: ia32 or i386 will work on *all* Xeons
pats4me
Thank you
smooge
correct. The xeon is a 32 bit x86 architecture
bish0p
ok, so the answer i was aiming for (which Evolution said but I didn't process right away correctly) - latest kernel plus kernel you get is meant for 4.4 which will have the appropriate GCC .. in the mean time downgrade to an older kernel while 4.4 is polished
Dyson
pats4me: some newer models (those with EM64T) can also run x86_64
pats4me: however - i've heard Xeons with EM64T run faster in 32bit mode
pats4me: but I wouldn't bet on it
pats4me
I really appreciate the help
smooge
Dyson, I didnt know that about the xeons and em64t. I thought it was a completely new chipset
orc_orc
(Action) has heard that a pony coated in glue will run faster still -- I want one
pony
NO pony for orc_orc!!!
(Action) grimaces
smooge
orc_orc, no its a pony covered in BBQ sauce that runs fast from orcs

bish0p
orc_orc: http://rubyurl.com/6vx
Dyson
smooge: there are Xeons which support AMDs x86_64-extensions. However, I don't know if there are specific mainboard needed or stuff. I just know they exist and can run x86_64
smooge: i.e. if I'd want x86_64, I'd buy Opterons :)
pats4me
I tried the x86 using the i586 install and it went through the whole install, but upon reboot it stops at "GRUB_" after the post
smooge
pats4me, which Centos are you trying to install?
pats4me
4.3
kspath
4.4 in less than 24 hours?
smooge
pats4me, are you dual booting (eg one OS) or dual booting?
pats4me
clean install, bye-bye m$
grantm
Dyson: I can believe EM64T could run faster in 32bit mode. I installed CentOS 4 x86_64 on one a while back, and it seemed slow compared to the i386 ones.
I never did verify though. I got it installed and gave it back to the owner.
networkcongestio
when the 4.4 comes out, will it just be pushed through yum
speaking of vware (although I'm sure it's the opposite setup) I'm running centos server 4.3 as a guest running vmware under xp
and it's been flawless
no problems with the kernel but this isn't a host os it's a virtual machine
I have a real server that isn't able to run the stock kernel due to a via bridge problem with the newer kernels
so I have to compile a custom kernel
rado1
uggg...grrrr all at once ...can't connect to mailserver
oh well...switch servers
tessier__
Does CentOS 4.3 use udev?
range
Yes.
Lazydog
hello, how can i switch from sendmail to postfix from the command line?
range
system-switch-mail?
miah
alternatives ?
Lazydog
range: tried that but doesn't look like that is installed on my system
range
Hmmm.
Let's think. What can we do about that?
Install it?
Lazydog
you know what package it's under? running yum now searching
wonder why it wasn't install automaticly?
miah
you should have alternatives
Lazydog
miah: like what?
miah
man alternatives
Lazydog
miah: ahh i see what you are saying. i tried this but then mail stops
range
As said: system-switch-mail is there for exactly doing that correctly.
Lazydog
range: yeah just installed switch-mail
ok see what happens now. even thought he only mail from that system is reports
miah
you can easily figure out how alternatives does it
it has a couple scripts in a directory, if you look at them its easy to figure out
alternatives --set mta /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix
then just stop sendmail, and start postfix
all alternatives does really is manage some symlinks, so even running system-config-mail is really un-needed
its good to do, but it wont be the end of the world

DVB: Anyone have a working kernel module/patch/etc to bring current DVB/V4L into the latest stable kernel? I'm already running centosplus and it's not current enough for several cards I'm I'm trying to make work.
Goran_
does centos 3.x use 2.4 kernel?
w1z3r
hi all
I have a server and it has 2 hdd
both LVM
but I cant mount 2nd hdd with mount command
is there any way to mount lvm hdds ? (/dev/hdb)
Goran_
wharts the mount error
range
Goran_: Yes, 3 uses a 2.4 kernel, but heavily patched.
anonobomber
is there a timeframe when CentOS 4.4 is going to be releaed?
released*
hughesjr
anonobomber: yes
anonobomber
hughesjr: how soon?
hughesjr
it is on it's way to the mirrors now ... it will be released when about 75% of our external public mirrors get it ...
anonobomber
ah nice :)
hughesjr
that should be tomorrow :)
martintoy
so I believe it should be tomorrow
anonobomber
awesome :)
JonathanD
I installed centos this morning
was very impressed
then my hard drive died
:(
martintoy
guys @centos should be very busy
JonathanD
*sighs*
rma, I guess
Goran_
would centos and other distros aswell ever stop atd from getting an exclusive lock on /dev/rtc
w1z3r
how can I run /bin/sh under "linux rescue" mode ?
hughesjr
JonathanD: that sucks ... the good news is ... tomorrow you can download new ISOs :)
anonobomber
thanks for all your hard work hughesjr
JonathanD
lol
hughesjr: but have nowhere to install them :P
unless I wanna lug a disk array to work
how crappily would cent run on ppro hardware?
hughesjr
w1z3r: it should dump you there
w1z3r
well it mounted my old hdd to /mnt/sysimage
martintoy
may be a stupid question but...
w1z3r
but I cant run sh
martintoy
... anyone has an idea how soon should be realesed a CentOS 5
hughesjr
w1z3r: it does that ... you can skip it though
w1z3r
so how can I use sh then ?
I need to mount /bin , /sbin
JonathanD
anyone know? :(
hughesjr
w1z3r: did it not also dump you at a prompt
w1z3r
so I can get my backups
it dumped me to prompt..
but it wont run sh or any app under /sbin, /bin
hughesjr
ah
w1z3r: chroot /mnt/sysimage
w1z3r
I did that
didnt changed anything
hughesjr
w1z3r: it should just work ... I would reboot and try it again
jlindsey
wow
Jamsi

JC^Omega
howdy
has anyone tried centos x86_64 on the intel pentium d's (they have the EMT64 instruction set on em)
and I was wondering if that stable for a production box or if I should just stay with the i386
er EM64T
sorry
Evolution
JC^Omega: works fine
minus any normal x86_64 cross-lib insanity, but you'll get that on any x86_64 system.
JC^Omega
well
I just need... apache, mysql, php, and that's it
Evolution
that will work quite nicely then
JC^Omega
cool
smp kernel in that as well yes?
Evolution
yep.
JC^Omega
sweet
we run about 30 or 40 centos servers at our office
but not any 64 bit boxes
Evolution
you may run into multi-arch install conflicts, but it's well documented on the mailing list, and we can help with that here also.
funzone
are you sure about that Evolution???
Evolution
funzone: am I sure that he may run into that? yeah. pretty sure.
funzone
or about helping him....
