What happens to my files when I stop an "mv" command durring operation to a seperate device than the source? Is it just doing a copy?
Delemas
Usually it does a copy and then an rm once the copy succeeds.
nuccad
cool
kreg_work
there a kerenel param you can pass at boot time to ignore certain ide devices? we have some machines that are cdrom ide, but hard drives are scsi. boot times take a long time because the kerenl waits for things like "hdc timeout, reseting drive..."
Jenkens
alright, network install is chuggin along
:)

I just made the sore mistake of trying to add a user named abuse to my system running Centos 4.3 - now I can't even log into the GUI and all mail connections are being refused. Anyone have a clue how to un-screw this?
donavan

Now all I see are 403 forbidden messages - even when trying to read the 403 forbidden message html file

DigitalExorcist: running a control panel?
DigitalExorcist
huh
Control Panel?? Like the web gui, or something else?
donavan
cpanel, plesk, etc?
DigitalExorcist
no
donavan
there are dozens
DigitalExorcist
should I be?
How would it solve this?
devhen
he's talking about control panels for setting up shared hosting accounts
donavan
probably not, control panels suck
DigitalExorcist
either way, neither is in my yum repository, and mail is still down
donavan
how did you add this user?
devhen
DigitalExorcist: i dont know why adding a user would break things like that. are you sure you didnt do anything else?
DigitalExorcist
using the BlueQuartz gui
crap - I left that out of the original posting
sorry
devhen
check your logs

DigitalExorcist
Nothing decisiive as to why apache is refusing connections and why the adduser failed
donavan
you'd have to ask the bluequartz folks -- no telling what they are doing in their control panel
SkramX
make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install && make install
is that correct for compiling my kernel?

Jenkens
oh christ
SkramX

Jenkens
i selected kde on the install but i see all this gnome crap being installed..
SkramX

Jenkens: ewww
Jenkens

(Action) punches the installer
donavan
Jenkens: its libraries for the tools
Jenkens

*punches installer*
donavan: unless gdm is a library, i call bs.
now here comes the kde stuff
donavan

Network unreachable.. ive got a box set up as 192.168.3.4, gateway is 192.168.3.254, netmask 255.255.255.0 and for some reason it cant seem to see anything on its own subnet... always with the 'network unreachable' error.
Never had this sort of thing before, as far as I can tell I set it up just the same as the other bazillion centos boxen
erm.
it appears i actually set the netmask to the ip of the machine. not 255.255.255.0. Doh.
Jenkens
hmmmm
alrighty
it appears my screen resolution for XORG is fubar. is there a special tool i can use to change it, or just mod the xorg.conf?
jsoft
isnt xorgconfig or something like that
Jenkens
hrm, even setting it manually..
window is only a portion of my lcd
alright, i'll try that :)
donavan
wide screen Jenkens ?
Jenkens
donavan: no sir, just a 17" lcd on this laptop
devhen
Jenkens, system-config-display
Jenkens
devhen: only gives 640x480 and 800x600
ok, holdon, setting monitor type
devhen
Jenkens, under the hardware tab, choose the monitor that matches your LCD/resolution
Jenkens
yeah, saw that
bingo!

Is it possible to install the tor daemon nice and easily by using 'yum' or some such? I am used to apt-get and am not sure about how to use it completely
Jenkens
is there any flag for yum to see what package comes out of which repository before fetching it?
lancelan
Jenkens, well yum list will show you that
eNTi
hi guys. i want to use gcc4 for make. where do i configure that?
donavan
Jenkens: man yum and read
kreg_work
in the bind-chroot pakaged, i've never used the /var/named/chroot/var/named/slaves or /var/named/chroot/var/named/data directories. what are those two intended for?
lancelan
kreg_work, I guess it depends the file location you specify in named.conf
kreg_work
i've just made up my own in the past
curious if i've been avoiding a better suggestion
lancelan
looks like it may be mandated in later bind-chroot - may be selinux policy related ??
kreg_work
not sure, but having a hard time googling such explanations
eNTi
i've used yum to install gcc4 and now i would like to know, how to replace the old gcc 3.4.5 with that. could someone please help me?
lancelan
kreg_work, bind packages also creates /var/named/data and /var/named/slaves
kreg_work, maybe start with bind manual
kreg_work, see in http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man8/named.8.html
kev900
hey guys, I just got my first webserver and am hoping someone can help me out with a problem I'm having
I have an excluse ip and I'm trying to configure my site by that ip before transferring the dns servers
but when I type in the ip address in firefox it says page cannot be found
kreg_work
lancelan, ah selinux
guess i could turn it back on
torbjorn
kev900: then port 80 on that ip is not reachable from the computer on which you run firefox
kreg_work
who came up with the idea of nameing the directory "slaves" on a primary dns server
kev900
any ideas how to change that? I have that port open on the webserver
I'm using plesk btw if that matters
torbjorn
what is plesk
kev900
its a control panel for the web server
Jenkens
woot
<3 yum
torbjorn
kev900: there are several possible problems
kev900: can you reach the ip at all?
ping would be a nice way to test that unless its blocked
kev900
yes ping is blocked
torbjorn
does the webserver run a firewall?
kev900
yes it does
ok
I just switched ping on
and it still will not let me ping the server
torbjorn
how do you operate the web server?
kev900
over ssh
but its a different ip address
torbjorn
how so?
kev900
I set up another ip address exclusively for this site
torbjorn
on the same interface?
kev900
yes
torbjorn
is it on the same subnet?
kev900
nope different subnet
I wasn't sure what to type in for subnet though
so I just put 255.255.255.0
torbjorn
thats not a subnet but a net mask
kev900
oh okay
torbjorn
what routes do you have on the computer that tries to connect with firefox?
and/or ping
kev900
how do I figure that out?
torbjorn
netstat -nar
dont paste
just tell me if you have anything out of the ordinary
you have a default gateway, right?
and a route to the local sub net?
and possibly a 169.254.0.0 route
kev900
yes I have a default gateway
and a 169.254.0.0 route
I'm not sure aobut the local sub net
torbjorn
is the default gateway the same computer that runs the webserver?
