dtm
ahoy kids. i have built a set of rpms for centos 4.3 that i'd like someone to test. i'd like you to test the RPMs as soon as they're done uploading and to test the build process if you have spare time and space.
it's for the jahshaka video editing system
Evolution
were you sure to include backdoor.sh?
dtm
uhhhhhh and btw remember not to run 'rpm -qpf --scripts *rpm' when you download them
s/qpf/qp/
Evolution
heh

dtm
ok for those of you who want to test the build system, see the last posting here http://www.jahshaka.org/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,45/page,viewtopic/p,6362/#6362
you should be able to simply paste that list of commands into your tty
but i'd also like to provide binary RPMs so i'm uploading those to http://smuckola.org/etc/jahshaka/
that'll take several mins
29MB at 50 kBps
bout 10 mins
this will require a crapload of other development stuff like qt-devel
Pretor1ab
hello all
how do i install a ..src.rpm
dtm
Pretor1ab: rpmbuild --rebuild foo.src.rpm
assuming you have the deps such as 'rpm-build'
Pretor1ab
thanks very much dtm :0)
dtm
Evolution: are you interested in testing
Evolution: this is a major project with > 90,000 downloads for the current beta versions
Evolution: i can't build LiVES because it requires gtk+ 2.8
er sorry some other vrsion.
that we don't have.
er yeah it is 2.8
Pretor1ab
so once i have run rpmbuild --rebuild foo.src.rpm is it then installed or do i need to run another command?
dtm
these multimedia related things are strongly motivating me to move my desktop back to fedora :\
Pretor1ab: read what it said
ok everythin'gs uploaded to http://smuckola.org/etc/jahshaka/ ... install those RPMs and run 'jahshaka' and tell me if it works
Pretor1ab
sorry dtm <-- dense
dtm
oic
Pretor1ab
i cant find any oinstructions
dtm
Pretor1ab: see the very end where it says where it wrote the rpms
Pretor1ab
oh yes -- do i go install them ??
dtm
i give you permission to install them
Pretor1ab
thank you
AlienBlood
Pretor1ab: is jahshaka-2.0-4.i386.rpm the core program, with the rest of the directory being dependencies?
dtm
AlienBlood: yes
AlienBlood: they're my RPMs
Pretor1ab
why is he talking to me?
dtm
because.
AlienBlood
lol sry....clicked the wrong name =P
Pretor1ab
ohh (panicked for a moment)
whatis janshaka?

dtm
AlienBlood: yeah just get those and do 'rpm -iv *' and see if jahshaka runs.
Pretor1ab: jahshaka.org
Pretor1ab: video editing system
Pretor1ab
ahh
i am seting up a server ready for next weekend - been working with ispconfig, mydnsconfig, scalix
linux is great
i am hoping the migration from M$ Win2k3 will bring a speed improvement to my system
dtm
:-o
Pretor1ab: well done
Pretor1ab
thanks very much
very satisfying getting to grips and understanding how stuff fits together instead of just click-click
dtm
yeah.
AlienBlood: i added two more other packages to that dir that you'll want
openexr and boost-jam
AlienBlood

nessup
How would I go about restarting one of the net stacks?
dtm
nessup: one of what?
nessup: you mean a network interface?
nessup: /sbin/ifdown eth0 ; /sbin/ifup eth0
nessup
no. a network stack (like tcp)
AlienBlood
dtm: tons of missing deps here
dtm
nessup: you reboot. nobody needs to do that.
AlienBlood: like what
AlienBlood: paste in /query
nessup
I wanna avoid that :/
dtm
nessup: what makes you think you need to do that
nessup
I've got a bunch of dead tcp ports that need resetting. how do I do it?
AlienBlood
dtm: http://pastebin.com/777590
dtm
nessup: how does a tcp port die/
?
nessup: by what means exactly are you determining this
nessup
I killed apache and for some reason it didn't clean up after itself
now I've got a bunch of open tcp ports waiting for data. I found this via netstat -n
dtm
AlienBlood: sudo yum install ffmpeg ffmpeg-devel
AlienBlood: for starters
nessup: i have never encountered that! are they zombied?
AlienBlood: did you install them all? including olib-boost?
AlienBlood: oh and boost-jam
nessup
dtm: there seemed to have been some child processes that didn't die. I've killed them.
dtm
nessup: is it ok now
nessup
thanks for the help :)
yes.
dtm
kool
nessup
dtm: also... I'm running on 1GB of memory. Is it a good idea to use the prefork/worker configurations in highperformance.conf?
dtm
nessup: i dont know
i would have to guess so
nessup
hm.
well, I'll just have to find out when the server gets heavy traffic :)
dtm
k
youll find out that a lot of modules are not threadsafe when you get heavy traffic too
i forgot whether prefork or worker is the threaded one
nessup
Is the RHEL RPM multithreaded?
I'
I'm just worried about the server running out of memroy.
memory*
Evolution
nessup: if you're worried about running out of memory, then you should look into setting limits for apache in the httpd.conf, limits, and via things like php.
dtm
nessup: apache threading is a configuration option
AlienBlood: ahoy. did you install ffmpeg and olib-boost
AlienBlood: those have the deps it said you were missing
nessup
I know. I'm wondering if the binary in the RPM was built with multithreading.
dtm
nessup: i would assume so
nessup
Well, threading seems pretty useless to me so I'll just stick with prefork.
dtm
yeah.
nessup
It seems it's performance gains do more harm than good.
dtm
it's a pointless risk
maular
if I install CentOS PPC32 on a G4 tower mac, will the hard drive boot a G4 xserve ok (if swapped over)?
Zaitech
So I installed CentOS and when I restart it doesnt give me the option to select it, it just auto boots windows Xp
and in Partition magic, it shows that I have a linux and whatnot drive but in my computer it only shows on drive and one unused drive
StarFly
which version of glibc does centos 4.3 use?
dtm
none
we ate it
niceman2
hi cent os is a sh*tty os
donavan
it wouldn't wipe for you?
ultramookie
niceman2: great, go install windows xp then and shut up
diowork
is there a gui for pkg management in centos? so i can see what rpm's have been installed and remove unrequired software
ultramookie
diowork: try yumex
yum install yumex
diowork
gettin it now thanks
tongueroo
this might be a silly question but ive got both apache and lighttpd install, i only want lighttpd to start when the computer boots, is the best way to do this simply deleting their startup symlinks in their rc.d folders?
so i would delete the rc.d symlinks for apache because i dont want it starting up
doubledoink
have a config issue .. need direction to look
pakal
use chkconfig command
doubledoink
apache and php are installed and all looks well inf confs

pakal
doubledoin have you restart your services after install?
doubledoink

it seems like php is not working .. serves staic pages just fine
pakal
tongueroo use chkconfig --level 345 httpd off
tongueroo
thank guys, thats just what i was looking for, i dont feel good about manually deleting them
doubledoink
how do i check the php setup ... I've done yum updates and all seems current
pakal
doubledoin have you see the apache logs? is there any error?
doubledoink
