windows users
range
I use windows very often and I always have a great user experience.
When I open them, fresh air comes into the room, in a closed state they don't allow the cold to get in, keep rain and snow outside - just great. And so easy to operate!
donavan
fresh air is dangerous for your health and well being
I suggest window vista2, pure diesel exhaust pumped straight into your sleeping quarters

aha!
4.4's kernel sees all my usb fluff :)

usb fluff ... Raid5 usb floppy drives ?

I'm seeing inconsistent results with sort. It appears to sort incorrectly when it is called via cron... anyone heard of something like this?
w1z3r
hi all
how can I mount a sata disk to my system?
mount /dev/sda /disk2 ?
seanos_work
you may wish to be more specific -- i.e. what your passing to sort, what type of data you are sorting, keeping in mind any multiline pastes to go to a pastebin
w1z3r: same as a normal disk -- assuming the sata controller is supported.

w1z3r
yes its supported but I have no idea how to mount it
seanos_work
it's a disk .. doesn't matter if it's sata/scsi/ide - other than device names will differ (sdX/hdX)
w1z3r
well when I do :
mount /dev/sda /hdd2 , it says this : " you must specify the filesystem type "
seanos_work
and did you?
w1z3r
I did -t ext2 but didnt work
ext3 either
LuvRedheads
typically you mount partions ....
seanos_work
yes, that too ... ... think eyes glazed over from having to watch rose of tralee...
w1z3r
like ?
I mean any example please..
LuvRedheads
fdisk -l /dev/sda might give you a clue
w1z3r
yeah well I see it
it echos the infos
LuvRedheads
what info is that?
w1z3r
that 80gb, sda1 and sda2 etc..
but the thing is when I specify -t ext2
it says wrongfs
LuvRedheads
you need to mount the partition .. not the device
donavan
perhaps a trip to "man mount" is in order for mr w1z3r
LuvRedheads
and fdisl -l gives you that info
errrr fdsik -l /dev/sdX even
w1z3r
well..
sda1 = Linux
sda2= Linux LVM

I'm having difficulty with sort -- I'm calling it as superuser from a cron job, and it is sorting ( when it fires ) in such a way that issuing sort -cf against the file that was sorted by the cron job ( "find . | sort -f > repo.txt" is the command I'm using to sort the data ) -- when issuing sort -cf, the file fails the test of being sorted.
denisbr
Good Night
donavan
what do those sort options do?

stormzen
-f makes it case insensitive, -c checks the file for being sorted.
donavan
where you learn about these options?
stormzen
man sort.
donavan
you read again
stormzen
just now... did I miss something?
donavan
do not sort
LuvRedheads
heh
donavan
stormzen: uname -a on your box is?
stormzen
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL #1 ... i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
donavan
stormzen: you read past the semicolon ' ; ' for the -c option?
[Outcast]
should the halt command power down the system
stormzen
yes. That is how I'm verifying that the file was not sorted. I am only using -f to sort the file.
( in the cron job. )
donavan
stormzen: what is exact entry in your cron job?
stormzen
30 1 * * * /home/shares/script/linux/backup-repo/prep-day.sh
so_
[Outcast], 9 times out 10, 50% of the time, only in the lower 48 states
[Outcast]
so_, thanks
so_
depends on the acpi working properly on the hardware
[Outcast]
it is a dell s850
2850
that is
donavan
okay stormzen now you can put that script into a paste bin?
smooge
stormzen: make sure your LANG or LC_COLLATE are set to C if you want Unix style sorting
so_
I believe it works fine for me on my 2850s
[Outcast]
you running 4.3 or 4.2
so_
4.3 everything becomes 4.3 by default...soon to be 4.4 :)
[Outcast]
maybe i need to do an update?
:)\
so_
systems with more than one cpu sometimes have difficulty shutting down, I haven't tested those machines lately
[Outcast]
ok thanks
stormzen
smooge: Please define 'unix style sorting' ...
donavan
where is this script?
smooge
Unix style is that the list Dog,Cat,Apple, dog, cat, apple gets sorted as Apple,Cat,Dog,apple, cat, dog versus apple,Apple, cat,Cat,dog,Dog
donavan
that the -f
stormzen
just a sec... pasting it now.
http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/Js8LFb54.html
donavan: I have only just figured out that it is the sort that is giving me the problem and not the diff. Though it fails, nearly every night, I had thought it was the diff until I ran sort -cf and discovered that the sort program itself didn't see it as sorted. I am setting up the smaller script to fire at 1am as a test case. Using at to fire off the sort script did not show the same behavior.
donavan
so you are telling me that you don't get a sorted list of files from that find command stormzen m?
what do you expect it to sort?
stormzen
yes, when it fires via cron... or at least I'm saying the the file that should be the file that the data was sorted into doesn't pass sort's own check when run interactively.
I expect it to sort the paths.
donavan
do you have a sample of this unsorted text you can put in pastebin?
stormzen
yes.
donavan
(Action) waits patiently
devhen
no way you guys are still talking about the sort thing! HA!
pony
(Action) gallops round and round the channel mercilessly stomping on devhen repeatedly
devhen
its just funny, havnt been in the channel since about 24 hours ago and stormzen and donavan were talking about the same thing :)
stormzen
http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/qm1YMb52.html
Cobra
(Action) pokes the pony
:D
just checking
(Action) pokes the donavan
and runs...
stormzen
This may just be a locale thing, after all, but I'm not deliberately setting the locale anywhere, and it runs differently interactively.
donavan
stormzen: what is echo $LANG
and your logic looks backwards
stormzen
en_US.UTF-8 is what it is interactively.
logic looks backwards? possibly, it is...
donavan
ohh I see
cronjob running as root?
stormzen
yes.
just logged in under root -- $LANG is en_US.UTF-8, in a fresh shell.
donavan
login is different than cron
I'm testing C4 right now
stormzen
is at different than login?
donavan
yes
stormzen
I tried it with at... it behaved the same as login.
donavan
< never used at
stormzen
used it to reboot recently..
that was it... cron is sorting differently than login.
I SUed, I at'd, I tried everything I could think of to try to get it to show me what it was doing...
... except set another cron job.
donavan
you can set defaults for the environment in /etc/crontab
or your shell script should do it
stormzen
yes. I'll put it in the shell script.
donavan
where did your incorrect sort come from?
stormzen
the cron job.
and correct.. is relative...
I called it incorrect because it didn't match what I was getting interactively.
donavan
incorrect in the sense that it sorted without a proper $LANG set
stormzen
I'm glad to finally be able to reproduce the problem. This one was driving me batty.
thanks for the help.
donavan
stormzen: you are a centos donor?
stormzen
donavan: Not yet. I still have to prove to the boss that it is worth donating to. The server is a test case.
(So far I'm sold, though. )
donavan
very well, you can thank all of us by using the donate button on the www.centos.org website :)
Frankenstein
how long does a centos server install with everything take to install on a pentium pro 200mhz 256mb ram, 6gig harddrive 7200rpm
Dysk
Frankenstein, Try it and find out
donavan
Frankenstein: everything server install? or an everything install off the server disk?
Frankenstein
donavan, seccond one
Dysk, and id like to know so i can plan ahead
donavan
Frankenstein: too many variables in play to be absolutely certain -- I'd plan for an hour
Frankenstein
donavan, ok, thanks
donavan
and be happy when its only 15 minutes
have you installed centos 100's of times?
Frankenstein
donavan, ive never installed centos before...
donavan
RHEL>
?
Frankenstein
no
it says theres an error while installing the kernel...
donavan
okay, might want to add a bit on to that
Frankenstein
how much diskspace does this require?!
donavan
not sure to be honest -- I've never everything installed the server disk
jmr2
I'm gonna get flamed for this, but is there an ETA for the 4.4 release?
donavan
jmr2, going to be a few days yet
3.8 is making its way to the mirrors
jmr2
alright, cool
