Anybody have any idea why ${NETWORKING} would be returning NULL? The network is fully operational on the machine (CentOS 4.3 x86, no IPV6)
donavan
where are you getting that?
pony
(Action) pony build 12 gallops into #centos
Willis
donavan: echoing it returns nothing. xinetd uses that check in its service launch file
LuvRedheads
Whatcha talkin' about Willis ?
(Action) grabs another beer
donavan
that rc file also does a bunch of other stuff too Willis
Willis
donavan: I know, but that is where it is failing for me
I commented out the line and it runs fine
range
Willis: the xinetd init file sources /etc/sysconfig/network - that's where $NETWORKING gets defined.
smooge
Willis, ${NETWORKING} is only used in oh never mind

donavan
so who broke your /etc/sysconfig/network file?
Willis
donavan: that file has NETWORKING=yes
donavan
Willis: what is the output from: rpm -V xinetd
Willis
with my fqdn set as well

range
What did you change in /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd?
Willis
I removed and reinstalled xinetd via yum, with no differences
#[ "${NETWORKING}" = "yes" ] || exit 0 <-- I added the # comment
range
Willis: Uncomment that please and then do a "sh -x /etc/init.d/xinetd start". Please paste the results to a pastebin.

Willis: You edited /etc/sysconfig/network with a windows editor?
donavan
obviously
Willis
range: I never edited it manually, so it would have been done through shell scripts
range
Same goes for sysconfig/xinetd
Willis
but I'll check the line endings in vi
range
Do that.
donavan
support has ended not a centos issue
range
You have a stray \r at the end of those lines (probably from a linefeed-return). Only \n (linefeed) is needed.
LuvRedheads
(Action) reads orc's lovely ml reply
Willis
yep, the first line in /etc/sysconfig/network has a windows return
range
And 'yes\r' really isn't 'yes'
donavan
and that file wasn't created by any centos tool
range
Willis: There's another one in the other file.
Willis
range: yes, the other one I did do in a windows editor (after I noticed the problem)
donavan
Willis: what control panel are you running?
Willis
donavan: directadmin
range
So there's no control panel involved?
Ah. :)
LuvRedheads
hah
range
Hrm.

downloading system files and editing them on windows is pathetic
Willis
donavan: thanks Mr. Perfect.

checking how to run the C++ preprocessor... /lib/cpp - I am getting this error. The system has gcc, what do I need to install?

do you also have the package gcc-c++ installed?

(Action) cracks open another beer and wonders why the openvz people did not just use the normal RHEL kernel versioning and tag it with .ovz or something to make it easier to know which kernel they modded. :|
Hmm... The DVD writer in my laptop seems to be fixed at 2x writing even though it's 8x dual layer capable. Time to investigate! Anyone else had this issue with CentOS?
donavan
philwyett: what is the output of "/sbin/lspci |head -1"
philwyett
donavan, 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 03)
donavan
(Action) has no ideas, how old is that chipset?
philwyett
donavan, Not very. The laptop is 4 months old.
donavan
what is it?
philwyett
Sony VAIO VGN-FS415M. Intel 1.73 Pentium M, 1 Gb DDR2, 80 Gb PATA HDD, nvidia 6400 Go etc. etc.
I suspected DMA, but that is active on the device.
donavan
no idea other than suspecting that the kernel is too old, have you tried FC5?
philwyett
Not yet, may try a live cd to check.
Recording at 2x only is something I can live with, but would be nice for it to work.
donavan
what does "hdparm -t /dev/hda |grep seconds" return?
philwyett
Timing buffered disk reads: 92 MB in 3.01 seconds = 30.59 MB/sec
donavan
so the hard drive is speedy enough as well
philwyett
Yes, the overall system performance is very good.
z00dax
philwyett: using the openvz kernel hardly qualifies as centos grade
dag
philwyett: yes, we should ask the ovz people to name their kernel package 'kernel'
philwyett: I'm sure they do not understand the implications regarding yum/apt/smart
z00dax
dag: what's it called now ??? its not called kernel- ?
(Action) has not yet had a play around
dag
z00dax: ovzkernel
z00dax
ooh that sux
philwyett
z00dax, I am just playing with it for kicks. No serious intentions of using it in production.
dag
phil: I do :)
z00dax
and does it Obsolete: kernel ? or onflict ? or does it just so the same %post as a normal kernel and add grub/lilo entries ?
dag
z00dax: no obsoletes/conflicts
z00dax
me too.... intend to use in production maybe
philwyett
dag, :-) OK, if it rocks I may think about it.
dag
z00dax: you only can have one installed
z00dax
right...
more comments once i've actually done somethin with it..
but we should make a pitch to call it kernel- something, or just repackage it into a pkg ourselves
donavan
where can I get the openvz debug enabled kernel?
z00dax
donavan: if its open, a src.rpm cant be far
dag
the src rpm is right there
donavan
z00dax: that was for earlier...

donavan
this license thread seems lively, worth reading?
z00dax
ha! the pkg is ovzkernel - the spec is kernel-ovz.spec ?? wt
donavan: maybe :)
GitRdone
ehhh that thread has a moment or 2
z00dax
ok, part of trying out OpenVz, will attempt to sane'ify that spec
for now, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz calls
