Evolution
but it's not the ideal place
technically it should go in /srv/cvsd I believe
if we're going by FSH standards
LuvRedheads
bleh
Evolution
(not that RH or centos follows FSH to the letter)
LuvRedheads: not a fan of FSH?
LuvRedheads
ehhh .. mostly it reminds me of suse ... which makes me sick
Evolution
hehehe
LuvRedheads: careful... Cobra is a suse fanboy
Cobra
and I run kde!
LuvRedheads
that doesn't suprise me
Cobra
:)
want a piece of me? huh??
Evolution
hehehehehe

LuvRedheads
heh
Evolution
hehehehehehe
Cobra
not you troll!
Evolution
:-P
Cobra
:p
Evolution
damn
Cobra
:O
Evolution
bruce1: debuginfo rpms contain the debugging information which has been stripped from the normal rpms. they are supplemental packages, not replacements.
bruce1
right...
and i've seen, and can find via google.. kernel-debug rpms..
Evolution - and this is why i'm looking to build centos from scratch.. to build a debug kernel
Evolution
You seem deeply confused.
Cobra
:O
donavan
or hiding something
LuvRedheads
or both
bruce1
Evolution - explain...
Cobra
w o w, I think I'm starting to figure out the confusion here.
Evolution
Cobra: good, would you mind translating?
donavan
thats rebuilding your entire car to hook a volt meter to the battery
bruce1
are you telling me that there's no "debug' kernel..
Evolution
bruce1: install the debuginfo package
it's that simple
PRESTO you've now got debugging information.
Cobra
maybe he doesn't mean 'rebuild the entire distro'

bruce1
and what would kernel-debug-2.4.9-e.59.i686.rpm:
Cobra
like it seemed when he first asked.
bruce1
be..
Evolution
bruce1: something that's never been supplied by centos.
Cobra: I'm not so sure. he seems to have spammed this concept everyplace he can find. he posted it to the mailing list as well
bruce1
i've been asking for information on how to build the kernel..in both regular mode, and debug mode.. i would assume any packages build for the regular centos could also be run on the debug kernel without rebuilding them..
Evolution
bruce1: for the last time. there is not, nor has there ever been a -debug kernel rpm for centos4.
you are deeply confused and have possibly been given false information elsewhere.
as I've said REPEATEDLY, now in multiple channels the debuginfo rpms are supplements which provide the debugging information.
there is no kernel-debug package, nor has there ever been.
Cobra
of course, you can pretty easily grab the src rpm and build it with whatever options you like, including debug.
bruce1
Evolution the file i just posted was in the errata for centos..
Evolution
bruce1: not for centos 3 or centos 4 it wasn't.
bruce1
don't know the version.. i could check..
but it was from the centos..
Evolution
bruce1: not for centos 3 or centos 4 it wasn't.
bruce1
it appears that it might have simply been provided from redhat
Evolution
bruce1: get your facts straight before you're removed.
you're growing irritating.
bruce1
but the fact that it's there states that it has been done, and i assume it can be done now..
Evolution you're giving false/wrong information
range
Hmmm. 2.4.9 looks like CentOS 2.1
Evolution
bruce1: no, I'm not.
smooge
2.4.9 is centos-2.1
or RHEL-2
bruce1
Evolution - the file was for centos2 http://www.centos.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=53
Evolution
bruce1: that version is in 'maitenance mode' and is not considered current. centos 3 and 4 are the 'current' versions
now please get your facts straight.
dtm
bruce1: so basically the only thing your OS needs is..... "the files". well that's a good start.
i like it
Evolution
dtm: :-P
dtm
can NOT argue with that
Evolution
nope, an operating system still definitely requires files of some sort.
donavan
(Action) demands entertainment
bruce1
Evolution - i'm not saying that the 2.* version is current.. what i am saying is that you can have a 'debug' version of a kernel and you've been trying to tell me about something else..
i'm trying to figure out how to build the latest version of centos from source, as well as a 'debug' version..
range
bruce1: But there never has been one for the current products. Yes, if you're able to build your own kernel from the src.rpms you might build yourself such a package.
Cobra
all of centos? bugger.
range
But it's neither b
provided by CentOS or by upstream.
bruce1
range - and all i've beentrying to do is get information to figure out how to accomplish this..
range
bruce1: You have a strange way of asking.
bruce1
range - i've been under the impression that if you have the srpms... then you should be able to build the kernel for both regule/debug..
regular..
Evolution
he's still not yet looked at the build directory on the mirrors either
bruce1: have you read the rpm building docs at rpm.org? have you actually LOOKED at how the rpm is built?
bruce1
range... if you go back and look at my very 1st post... you'll see this is what i asked!
Evolution
do you have a single question that shows you've attempted to do any research at all on your own?
bruce1
Evolution - what build dir..
i've already started downloading the iso/srpms..
http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/4/isos/ <<< is there another dir..
Evolution
bruce1: the one on the mirror containing all the build scripts I've told you about multiple times already
that's not even REMOTELY close to the url I gave you
range
And the debuginfo rpm doesn't cut it?
smooge
bruce1, the -debug item was only in the RHEL-2/RHL-7.x series
bruce1, it was deprecated for debuginfo in the later items
bruce1, the code in the spec files to create a -debug no longer exists.
bruce1
smooge - really...
Evolution
smooge: I wouldn't put much time into correcting/helping. he seems to not be interested in helping himself
bruce1
smooge do you know why it was removed..
Evolution i don't have a url from you.. i do have on e from cobra..
range
bruce1: Because *now* there are -debuginfo rpms.
anel
Hi everyone
I need a hand
bruce1
range - so if i understand you .. you're saying that one can build a 'kernel', and a 'kernel-debuginfo
package..
range
Tried #chirurgy? :)
bruce1: It has been done, yes.
bruce1
cool..
anel
I'm trying to rebuild centos from scratch, any pointers on where to start?
bruce1
and if i further understand... you're saying essenatially that i can run either kernel, or kernel-debuginfo..
range
anel: Ask bruce1, he's trying to do the same.
bruce1: No, I am not saying that.
You have been told that the debuginfo stuff is supplemental to the normal rpms.
anel
bruce1: what are you trying to do? I want to make a cool new distro using centos
then sell support service and updates
bruce1
ok.. then can you tell me what kernel-debuginfo provides
range
dbug symbols?
bruce1
anel i'm simply looking to get a better understanding of centos/building os from scratch..
range
+e
bruce1
range - but i still need the 'kernel' to run..
anel
someone will help me? where are the build scripts?
range
anel: That's great. And you're donating 80% of that money to CentOS?
Evolution
range: what's the current distance record for a kick in here?
range
100 yards?
anel
why does centos need money?
Cobra
when it rains...
anel
I'm sure these guys make buckets of cash
besides, I have a few touches of my own to make things even better
Cobra
lol
Evolution
(Action) takes donavan's toys away
donavan

:P
donavan
only for self amusement
Evolution
donavan: do you have power enough to punt him from -devel also?
donavan
no
Evolution
Cobra: don't forget, many people here are quite familiar BOFH or know kainX personally... :-P
LuvRedheads
:)
donavan
is cobra one of kainX's boy toys?
LuvRedheads
heh
Evolution
donavan: yep.
bruce1
Evolution - you're the kind of person that gives the net a bad name..
range
Zerberus: Good, that I only read -test and -devel then :)
anel
what did I do to get booted?
dries
i think i'm just in time to watch some #centos entertainment :)
