i know z00dax i thought it was stange
dan__t
dum de dum...

I am cornholio!
duckdown
Hey all.. How can I simplify the user adding process in console? system-config-users needs an X server, is there something a curses front end or even a script that justs asks for the info?
z00dax
useradd ?
duckdown
thats the big command line version, im a novice user and thats complicated to do each time
orc_orc
duckdown: what does: man -k add | grep user offer?
duckdown
A few off-topic entries maybe but useradd also
z00dax
adduser ?

duckdown
nope useradd
LuvRedheads
adduser/useradd is too hard ?
orc_orc
z00dax: seemingly it laks a man page which make it findable ;)
z00dax
:) adduser is another name for useradd
duckdown
okay thanks then sorry to waste your time
orc_orc
/usr/sbin/adduser -> useradd
(Action) chopped the: lrwxrwxrwx
z00dax
duckdown: you dont usually need to do much more than "useradd <username>" and passwd <username>
so_
where can I read up on the start/stop priorities for initscripts, just need to be sure my processes are stopping in the right order
orc_orc
so_: goole for: initscripts dependency
there are projects formally analyzing this in debian, fedora, and Sun atm
so_
but mostly in Centos is numerical with chkconfig, so I was just going to set it this way
chkconfig's man page only mentions it in passing though
orc_orc
so_: yes: this line: # chkconfig: 2345 20 80
so_
I know, I have such lines, but I don't know what numerical order they get executed in on start and stop...bah I should just read the script that calls the initscripts :)
orc_orc
but really that is just the lipstick extension in the initscripts for chkconfig which SGI had writen up being docoed by EWT
that example will get a S20 link, and a K80 link
skippybal
helo... could someone help me? i would like to run a program at startup...
orc_orc
so_: they are parsed in ascending numerical order, and as I recall then alpha, according to Unix convention
Evolution
skippybal: startup of what? the system, the window manager?
skippybal
shoutcast server,
i use webmin
i can start it via the command line,
so_
orc_orc, on both startup and shutdown they proceed 1->100 which is how I thought they went just trying to read some docs to confirm
orc_orc
so_: man init is your better friend, as mentioned at the bottom of the sysconfig man page
Evolution
skippybal: how did you install the shoutcast server?

skippybal
ftp the file's to a folder, change the owner and group.
and run it by going to /home/sc
and running ./sc_serv
Evolution
ugh
skippybal
sorry..
Evolution
that's a horrid way to install it...
skippybal
i'm pretty new to linux :-(
Evolution
skippybal: for centos, you really want to install most things via rpm
skippybal
i use rpm alot
didn't know there was an rpm
donavan
via rpms
so_
orc_orc, ah /etc/rc.d/rc is most enlightening
Evolution
there's an icecast rpm which will do very similar things.
skippybal: with your way, the only thing I could suggest would be to edit /etc/rc.local to start it, which is very hackish, and not recommended.
skippybal
i downloaded the file's can i run multiple instances?
brb sorry
ohone
Evolution
if the code allows it.
skippybal
phone
orc_orc
so_: that it the heavy lifter in the process for non-BSD (ie SysV) type daemon process startup, yes
dan__t
orc_orc, I found firmware.
orc_orc
dan__t: congrats
dan__t
I have this eerie feeling that the passwords are not stored in the same section as the firmware, thus my little experiment will not work.
Time will tell.
duckdown
Hey all... If I wanted to restrict people on my machine from connecting to a list of regular efnet IPv4 servers (Only like 8 out of them all support IPv6 and thats all I want to allow) where can I add the list of servers I want to deny access to?
lancelan
duckdown, iptables ??
dan__t
har
flash upgrade failed...
Sneaky_Bastard
nooooo!
devhen
anyone know where i can get wine packages for centos 4?
Evolution
devhen: centos.karan.org -> wiki.centos.org/Repositories
devhen
thanks Evolution!
VicRicker
Hi. Any LVM experts alive?
lancelan
VicRicker, one would hope so for the future of LVM
VicRicker
I meant here. :-)
Evolution
VicRicker: are you implying that we have hostages?
because I'll F'ing KILL THEM if you come any closer........
I mean.. uh....
VicRicker
hehe
Anyway.. I took a drive from my Fedora box, slapped it in my centos box and want to add to lvm.. I wiped the partitions and tried to do pvcreate but I get a weird error.
"Can't open /dev/hdd exclusively. Mounted filesystem?"
I tried with the gui tool system-config-lvm.. it has the same error.
devhen
Failed dependencies: liblcms.so.1 is needed by wine-cms
donavan
VicRicker: dd if=/dev/zero the drive and reboot
VicRicker
I tried that... I didn't let it finish but it ran for quite a while..
I guess I will try again
devhen
nvm, found lcms and lcms-devel in that repo
slowgo
I hate to bother you guys with all my newb questions and i have googled ...but i need a little guidance to a site/location for centos/linux command line instruction/learning?
donavan
devhen if you properly configured for the repo you are using you would have auto resolved the deps
devhen
donavan, right. i was just d/l pkgs 1 at a time ;)
damn, ive got no fonts in putty thru wine... any ideas? (blank where there should be text)
VicRicker
slowgo man -k is your firiend
friend too
lancelan
devhen, why would you want to run putty through wine ??
devhen
lancelan, its the only i way i can get function and backspace keys to work for telnetting to an SCO server (yuck, SCO....)
VicRicker
wow sco is the work of Satan
Evolution
devhen: it's fairly trivial, you just have to tell rxvt, or gnometerminal or Kterm or xterm to use the proper TERM value....
say, vt102
VicRicker
for backspace, you might be able to use 'stty' too.
lancelan
devhen, I thought putty was available for linux ...
http://rpmforge.net/user/packages/putty/
devhen
ill check that out thanks!
lancelan
np
devhen
it worked thanks so much!
VicRicker
Has anyone tried mugshot.org? or do you want to? I have some invites left.
dan__t
orc_orc, failed again.
*sigh*
hah looks like i fried the board, too.
dberry
anyone running device-mapper-multipath along with lvm?
Evolution
not me.
evilrabbit
I once ate a chicken?
Evolution
I once kicked a guy from irc named evilrabbit
evilrabbit
ouch
no love
Evolution
:-P
evilrabbit
Evolution, I didn't like the new eureka
it wasn't as gripping as the first 2
Evolution
I just watch it for jo.. she's hot.
evilrabbit
jo is hot
Evolution
there's nothing quite like a feisty italian chick with a BFG
evilrabbit
chicks + guns + tight uniforms = AWESOME SHOW
hence pamala andersons success
anywho... im outta here.
dan__t
okie, i got the firmware back.
donavan
Evolution: watching myth busters?
VicRicker
I'd do Pam Anderson again... If she begged me.
:-)
daMaestro
Evolution, thanks much for your help on the clock issue with the new dual core CPUs
i think this link would go well on your wiki: http://www.vmware.com/support/kb/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=d9NN5-5i&p_lva=&p_faqid=1420 just as some added info
steve_Laptop
hello all I download the 4.3 server cd is there a howto some were for setting up web/mail/samba/print servers? or can I use the ones I find for fedora
donavan
steve_Laptop: a majority of the information you find for RedHat/Fedora/RHEL apply to centos with little modification
steve_Laptop: and all the tasks you ask about are covered in www.centos.org/docs/4
steve_Laptop
donavan, ok thanks im a newbie when it comes to servers.....
Evolution
daMaestro: interesting link.
thanks, I'll put it up.
dan__t
(Action) stabs Inter-Tel
Evolution
(Action) stabs InterTrode
dan__t
heh.
fedorared
Where might I get a later rpm of MySQL-python that might work better with MySQL 4.1?
I guess a better question would be how do I bludgeon MySQL-python into doing utf8 instead of latin-1 and will a later version help.
kraypius
im having a problem. proftpd messed up and I uninstalled it.. now there should be no ftp server running but my server is still accepting ftp connections
so_
kraypius, the process is probably still running you'll have to kill it
kraypius
im not seeing it on the list though
i see ftpd -l -a but only once ive initated an ftp connection
so_
perhaps you have another ftp server package on there then :)
kraypius
or this thing is lieing to me
so_
you can use netstat and maybe lsof to see what processes are running for ftp, or it's being started from xinetd
donavan
anyone have a url for inter-tel? I need to send them some compliments, money, thank yous for keeping dan__t distracted
kraypius
2177/xinetd listening port 21
so... should i just kill that?
donavan
sig hup might be smarter
but then I'm merely a code monkey wuddo I know
kraypius
hm
fedorared
I would /etc/init.d/xinetd restart
kraypius
still accepting connections
:(
