wwalker
so when yum says "Remove 0 Package(s)" and then during the install it says "Removing : MySQL-server-standard" and "Removing : MySQL-client-standard" is this a CentOS bug, a MySQL bug, or a yum bug and where do I report it?
snowfaked
is there something like drbd where i could mount the disks on both machines? like network raid 1
wwalker
mount what disks on which two machines?
rocky
hm... i need to setup a small backup/file-sharing server here at my small office where only 3 workstations are running at any given time
so what i was considering doing was buying a very cheap box and using a couple 250gb sata drives for this purpose
i was also considering to use external firewire or usb drives ... anyone have experience in such a setup?
Dyson_
these disks are fscking slow
Dyson
rocky: I'm using an external USB-HDD to mirror backups
rocky: and another one with Firefire (same purpose, different customer)
rocky: and they're both really really slow
rocky
Dyson: so you suggest i stick with internal sata ?
Dyson
rocky: I'd suggest that, yes
rocky
i don't want to use eide as i expect to expand beyond 4 drives

dant
you can have more than 4 drives with EIDE and SATA
just need more controllers
Dyson
rocky: hmm... how much is "a couple" of drives?
rocky
i thought standard SATA controllers supported more than 4 disks whereas a standard EIDE controller only supported 4
Dyson
rocky: 2? 20? 200?
rocky: SATA-Hostadapers support one Device per Channel
rocky
Dyson: i will start out with 2, but i expect to add upwards of 10
if possible
Dyson
rocky: and usually there are two channels per hostadapter with sata
Evolution
(Action) notes that he's got a box with around 24 SATA drives at work.
Dyson
(Action) notes that he has seen boxes configured with 24 SATA drives, too
slowgo
(Action) notes he is jealous of Evolution
dant
(Action) notes that anything is possible
slowgo
(Action) add Dyson to list also
dant
the only limit is your imagination, budget and skill ;)
slowgo
Total Free: 857.48 GB/1723.23 GB
RAM: Used: 908/3711MB
yea i know
rocky
well basically when i exceed my disk space i'd like to buy a new disk ... and keep doing that possibly upwards of 10 drives at which point i'll start removing drives
but that will probably be a long time
Dyson
rocky: how are you going to ensure fault-tolerance? (i.e. raid and foo)
rocky
Dyson: i'm not ... i'm a noob at this ;)
i'm trying to build up a low end solution
dant
one big raid 0!
Dyson
ah... i c
Evolution
1 big raid0... where 1 drive failure tanks EVERYTHING
good plan! ;-)
dant
I like it :)

Dyson
(Action) refuses to answer questions considering RAID0
:)
Evolution
I'll answer... with mocking
mocking is an answer.. right?
dant
I like to laugh at people using raid0 to store all their important data for fast access
Dyson
dant: hmm... like binary-newgroup servers? :)
dant: _very_ important data ;)
dant
hmm, important, hmm
Evolution
s/binary/porn/
Dyson
Evolution: if you say so... you probably know it better ;)
dant
it's only going to get worse
HD-Porn
Dyson
even worse... multi-angle hd-porn
rocky: however...
rocky: you can provide up to 16 SATA-Ports with on PCI-Hostadapter
rocky: and the system probably has more than one PCI-Slot...
rocky
well, is there a simple software raid i could/should setup for this?
Dyson
rocky: so the maximum number of drives is more limited by the chassis and budget than the available ports
dant
PCI's not exactly going to give you the best connectivity for 16 SATA ports, let alone multiples of this though...
as I said, imagination, budget, skill, in that order :)
Dyson
dant: PCI, PCI-X, PCI Express, whatever
dant
k :)
Dyson
dant: or maybe SBUS :)
rocky: software-raid, easy setup and expandability... choose any two
dant
you aren't in #aurora? :)
Dyson
what should i do there?
dant
FC on sparc
Dyson
pff
z00dax
whats wrong with CentOS on sparc ?
Dyson
it has a doubtful future?
z00dax
no it does not
there are quite a few people working on it at the moment
dant
it's got a lot of input from aurora?
Dyson
oh, great
z00dax: i put my sparc-plans to dormant-state when I heard the maintainer couldn't do it anymore
z00dax
hughesjr is getting a lot of stuff from aurora for the Niagra support, yes
Dyson: we're not going to let any Arch drop away, we're only adding to it
Dyson
z00dax: hmm... ok. It was "just" beta, so I thought it would be dropped
dant
I did a TL1 on sparc build once
Twigathy_
hmm, any way to get APM stuffs working in CentOS? Right now I get:
[Twigathy@subbunny ~]$ /usr/bin/apm -s
No APM support in kernel
dant
but it just wasn't fun
Dyson
z00dax: if it is still alive, I might get a new(er) SPARC
z00dax
Twigathy_: apm is in the kerel, it will come on if it works with your mobo
Dyson: is very much alive, we've even got a t2000 from sun recently
Dyson
wow
Twigathy_
Ah, i may need to jibble with my BIOS settings a little, or might it be my mobo isnt supported in this kernel (for power management, at least)
z00dax
Twigathy_: or use acpi
Twigathy_
ah, how might one go about doing that?
Dyson
so I'll see if I can still get the Enterprise 3500
z00dax
google knows
Twigathy_
affirmative. Cheers :)
dant
poo
sleep time
Twigathy_
wow, fail >_<
The system appears to suspend, and then immediately comes out of suspend mode
Dyson
Twigathy: this happens often if you've got SCSI-Hostadapters
Twigathy: all my SCSI-Systems refuse to do Standby or Suspend
Twigathy_
hum. No SCSI devices or controllers in this machine. 4x SATA drives and 1x PATA drive, plus a single PATA DVD burner..
Dyson
Twigathy: there might be other hardware which blocks the suspend
Twigathy_
only other hardware in the box is an Audigy 2 ZS soundcard and a Geforce 6600GT (Using the NVidia binaries)
The log for acpid is pretty much empty, so evidently "echo -n standby > /sys/power/state" isnt quite what Im looking for.
Dyson
Twigathy: hmm... dunno
Twigathy_
<grumble> Its times like this im reminded CentOS isnt really meant as a desktop OS </grumble> ;)
Evolution
heheheheh
Twigathy_
(Action) quivers
Evolution

Twigathy_
dont kick me ;)
Evolution
:-P
Dyson
(Action) never had any real issues with CentOS as desktop os
just don't try to use notebook-features for your workstation :p
s/for/on/
Evolution
Dyson: what if your workstation is a notebook?
Dyson
Evolution: then don't use notebook-features on your notebook :p
Evolution
:-(
Cobra
(Action) considers thwapping Evolution
Twigathy_
hmm, I guess another way to approach this would be....saving the current gnome session and shutting down completely - is that possible? :D
Evolution
it all works except sleep.
Dyson
so "real" suspend works, but standby doesn't?
Twigathy_
nothing works here, thats what im trying and failing to get to work
Dyson
hmm
yep, but as soon as you get it running, you'll probably realize that wakeup has issues :)
at least this was where I stopped investigating
Twigathy_
lol
http://pastebin.ca/79170 <-- silly thing :(
Evolution
Twigathy_: linux is dying. just go get the windows restore cd that came with your lappy and install a real os.
Twigathy_
Its not a laptop ;)
And I'd rather not use windows....
Evolution
even better. clearly you need some windows XP lovin
Twigathy_
denied.
Evolution
windows security is far better than linux security though.
and the windows firewall is unmatched in quality
Twigathy_
>_<
Evolution
hehehehehe
(Action) can't keep this up with a straight face.
Twigathy_
If by security you mean "lack of" then maybe... ;)
And if by "unmatched in quality" you mean "sucks ass"...

Opps- looks like a firework got thru my Windows firewall.

doesnt matter a great deal, im on a reasonable (for the UK, at least) connection here - (2/5): openoffice.org-lib 100% |=========================| 38 MB 01:01
not quite as fast as the university network, but pretty quick :)
yay, updated :)
Evolution, so....windows update > yum? ;)
