linux sucks compared to windows my windows 95 box has a 11 year uptime beat that
dtm
well done
tojoe
must be a smart kid, installing windows at age 2 :p
dtm
and hacking the OS in ram with a binary debugger to keep it running
Eureka
someone have a moment to help me upgrading a software called ruby
range
"yum update ruby"
Eureka
range: it doeesn't update
it's not on the repos yet
dtm
range: incorrect answer. now Eureka shall destroy you!
please state your home address so that he may have your home burned to the ground.
Eureka
dtm: you will be regret man, TX boy

olinux
argh, this is maddening
trying to transfer file between 2 servers and it stalls after about 1mb
i've tried wget, ftp, sftp
same result
dtm
olinux: over what medium
olinux
wget http://myurl
ftp to vsftpd server
dtm
what medium, not what application
olinux
(commandline client)
tar file
dtm
:-I
what medium, not what file format
ethernet, wifi, etc
donavan
(Action) snickers at dtm
dtm
hi
olinux
heh
ethernet,
dtm
we're traversing the OSI and then some
olinux
well internet in between
dtm
okay check the cable for teeth marks
do you have cats?
or are your ethernet cables fashioned from beef jerky
donavan
check the internet cabling as well
olinux
not cables..
centos1 is at my office, centos2 is at colo facility, i'm on winxp at home
dtm
check the internet, too. it runs mostly under ground.
you will need a backhoe
olinux
i can download the file just fine to home
dtm
centos1!!!
i've never heard of anyone using that. neato
olinux
centos version 4.3
dtm
centos1, V 4.3?

olinux
i'll call it centos@work, centos@colo, winxp@home
dtm
oh! you're talking about pseudohostnames.
olinux
yes, all centos are v4.3
dtm
k
olinux
i'm thinking maybe something netowrk config related
dtm
olinux: do your hub/switch indicate collisions
does 'dmesg' have errors
can you transfer reliably from centos1 or centos2 to anywhere else
olinux
i can download files to winxp@home
(Action) tries centos@home
same deal ...
wget http://myurl stalls out
centos@work is behind router, /etc/hosts should contain WAN ip or LAN ip?
dtm
olinux: /etc/hosts for what purpose
there is no automatic "should", other than that you "should" be using bind rather than /etc/hosts
olinux: you're getting the same deal even within the same lan?
olinux
i'll try from another machine on the same lan
dtm
k
17:36 < dtm> olinux: do your hub/switch indicate collisions
17:36 < dtm> does 'dmesg' have errors
bobnn
did you say bin to ftp befopre stating xfer?
oh wait, wget, too, nevermind
olinux
bobnn- no
ya wget crapped out as well
bobnn
when using ftp client to ftp server on binary files, I've seen that hang things. but wouldn;t expect that w/ wgwt.
or even wget
olinux
dtm, i dont see anything in dmesg
Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 233419
Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 233420
bobnn
just as a wild guess, i'd say that's bad.
olinux
but not the transfer issue :/
dtm
olinux: how do you know that
olinux
it's not caused when the transfer stalls, and I can transfer fine to my winxp@home
dtm
maybe increase verbosity
of transfer
like 'scp -v'
olinux
ok
bobnn
how are you uiisng wget to send a file top a vsftpd server?
I don;t see that anywhere in man wget
olinux
bobnn- i'm not sending with wget... since my ftp put didnt work i went to destination and tried to wget it
bobnn
and that also failed after 1MB?
olinux
ya
end result i want to get file from centos@work to centos@colo
i can get file from centos@work to winxp@home
Evolution
have you checked your firewall? local and remote?
olinux
i can not get file from centos@work to centos@home or centos@colo
Evolution
mostly to ensure that pasv ftp is allowed?
olinux
nice, scp is working
bobnn
what happens if you then send from winxp@home to centos@colo
Evolution
olinux: that smells of firewall issues.
olinux
bobnn- is should be able to do that, but only have 1.5mb at home
plus there's apparently a prob that needs addressed
Evolution
(Action) wanders off to talk to the wall about olinux's firewall issue. perhaps the wall will be more responsive.
olinux
Evolution- but i dont get why i CAN download the file from work to my home machine (http)
but cannot wget the file to my home centos
port 80 is open to the work server
so even if there is firewall issue (passive vs active), port 80 should be fine
crap ..
13% 34MB 0.0KB/s - stalled -
that's the scp transfer
Evolution
olinux: quit changing protocols and fix one thing at a time.
olinux
ok :)
but i saw the same prob ftp/http.. that's interesting
Vilela
well I had this before
Evolution
also, as to your disk write errors you listed earlier, that COULD be related to your problem, as it a transfer has to put the file SOMEWHERE
Vilela
olinux: I had this issue with many clients of an internet provider, it was the MSS size
olinux: use 'tcpdump -n -i ethX' and see if when it stops the MSS gets its size changed
olinux
ok,
i did have a bi**h of a time getting openvpn to work reasonably and the mss was the fix
Vilela
olinux did you solve it with MSS clamp via iptables?
olinux
still rather slow, but hard to say if that's because I only have T1
no, i set the windows client to something
(Action) searches MSS clamp iptables
Vilela
try mss clamp
Evolution
olinux: see, it's info like that which would be good to know when helping you troubleshoot things....
Vilela
I don´t know how is MSS clamp´s support on CentOS, ´cause I used slackware in that era
olinux
Vilela- this is a problem caused by the network equipment (router/switch)? os? ISP?
Vilela
olinux: we have no way to tell. it maybe a problem in any router in the path
iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN -j TCPMSS --clamp-mss-to-pmtu
olinux: in my case it was a Linux GRE problem
olinux
ok
Vilela
olinux: well I put FORWARD, actually FORWARD is for a router... in your case it maybe -A INPUT I guess
olinux
thanks, i have a bit of reading before i understand the whole mss
Vilela
olinux: I think MSS is the TCP packet size. There´s something called MSS Discovery that tries to discover the maximum MSS allowed in your path to the server. But maybe sometimes your path just get changed (and MSS also, but not updated) so you have to start a new TCP connection because the old one was destroyed
give a try and tell me
olinux
try the iptables?
Vilela
olinux: the iptables forces the MSS to the correct value if there´s a bugged router or a server with a bugger MSS Discovery
*bugged
I´m trying to find the routing map of Linux kernel... but without success
olinux: look how a packet travel inside Linux http://www.docum.org/docum.org/kptd/
olinux
ok
TimG
hi, i am trying to recompile my kernal and I am following a guide
When using make config
I get several errors
dtm
TimG: put em in rafb.net/paste
TimG
ok
http://rafb.net/paste/results/SMvkkd19.html
Zerberus
hrhrhr
TimG
Any help? I am not a familier linux user and i am following a guide. Trying to get this done hastly
Zerberus
TimG: why do you try to compile a custom kernel?
TimG
Kernel timer frequency reasons. :P
Zerberus
"/bin/sh: gcc: command not found" reread that line
it is obvious
TimG
o.o
Zerberus
omg, you are Bruffellz
TimG
word :D
So i am not sure what that means?
