Eureka
I'm trying to set up a web server, I have two machines running linux, in order to increase reliability of the web server. I've set up http apache on both. I'd like to have one as a backup in case the other one goes offline. How can I accomplish this goal?
range
heartbeat.
PacketScan
thump. thump , switch
Eureka
thanks
range
Or loadbalance them. But then the load balancer could go down ...
PacketScan
round robin dns
but you need two external ip's.
range
PacketScan: That sucks if one machine goes down.
Because half of the requests go to the dead machine.
Zerberus
Eureka: are you a CentOS or a Fedora user with your 2 machines? i ask because you ask your question in both channels
Eureka
Zerberus: I've got a few machines with FC, a few with CentOS for servers

range
Centora.
Zerberus
range: *g*
if it is not FecOS
PacketScan
range, yar but relieve load from one machine and there by decreases the chance of failure.
range
I'll believe that, when I see it. RRDNS is great for mirror structures (like mirror.centos.org), but sure isn't a solution for high availability.
jlc
anyone know what redhat-release looks like on rhel 4.3
Zerberus
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 3)
jlc
ah, thx
i tried 4.3 :)
for something like WebSphere to install without getting Unsporrted OS, what do you think I need to do
cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 3)
CentOS release 4.3 (Final)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 2)
i have now tried many :)
Dyson
jlc: hmm... trace the installer?
jlc: maybe it doesn't read /etc/redhat-release but checks the os by other means
jlc: i.e. rpm -q redhat-release or sth like this
jlc
k
how do you trace it, just trace ./install ?
Dyson
strace
but beware, it will produce _loads_ of output
jlc
k
Dyson
but if you write to a file and Ctrl-C when it sais unsupported os, the test will be probably near the end of the output
may I ask what you are trying to install?
jlc
websphere application server 5.1
Dyson
hmm... afaict the IBM tools just check /etc/redhat/release
erm... /etc/redhat-release
jlc
yeah, I'm looking at supported OS's, i might have grabbed the wrong .x release
Dyson
yeah... or maybe the IBM-check relies on the exact format of the file
i.e. whitespace and newlines and such
btw... this installer... is it a script?
jlc
i looked at it, gobbly stuff
:)
Dyson
a gobbly script or a gobbly binary-executable? :)
jlc
binary :)
yep, i grabed 5.1 and 5.1.1 is supported
I could have swore I grabbed 5.1.1 friday
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21206183
that answers that :)
Tm218
what do i do if yum cannot find the correct dependency when installing something?
im trying to install bmon
and
it cannot find: librrd.so.0

Zerberus
rrdtool is provided by rpmforge for instance
Tm218
okay, i tried installing rrdtool
and it gave me:
actually
i just installed rrdtool and it still says when i try to install bmon that that dependency cannot be located
Zerberus
rpmforge is a third party repository with EL rpms
Evolution
Tm218: are you trying to build against rrdtool?
Tm218
all i am trying to do is install bmon
Zerberus
the bmon you want to install is too old
z00dax
where is bmon coming from ?
Tm218
yum
Zerberus
it requires an old rrdtool so lib
kib
ok here is the deal
z00dax
which repository ?
kib
/usr/lib/librrd.so.2 exists but not .0
so bmon is depending on something older then rrdtools seems to provide now
but rrdtools probably used to isntal .0
z00dax
kib: what repository are you getting bmon from ?
LuvRedheads
rpmforge issue
Evolution
that's something that the repository maintainer needs to account for, which is why z00dax is asking which repo is providing bmon
kib
it looks like the package inthe repository is not been updated
z00dax: we use rpmforge
Evolution
kib: #rpmforge is your place then.
kib
you do you know of another one that might be better?
Evolution
you need to let them know.
kib
ok Evolution
z00dax
are we sure bmon is actually coming from rpmforge ?
Evolution
or send an email to the rpmforge/dag folks to make them aware of the conflict.
z00dax
kib == Tm218 ?
Tm218
no
Evolution
z00dax: since they won't answer, I'm operating under that assumption.
Tm218
kib = partner of tm218
z00dax

iam8up|lpy: one of you is enough.
Cobra
Evolution|a|b|c ?
Evolution
heh
Cobra
happy 4th :)
Evolution
it's not the 4th yet :-P
Iam8up|lpy|dsc
.
Cobra
'.' ?
oh, are you working tomorrow Evolution? ;P
iam8up|lpy
<(`-`)>
Cobra
I.am.a.puppy?
Evolution
Cobra: yes. actually I do have to go to work tomorrow
iam8up|lpy
me too =)
we can be working during holiday buddys!
Cobra
you scare me
iam8up|lpy
=)
Evolution
(Action) attempts to resist the urge to not punch iam8up|lpy
iam8up|lpy
i'm just joking....
don't hate me
donkdonk
does anyone have the cert from LPI? http://www.lpi.org/en/lpic.html
Evolution
donkdonk: yes.
z00dax
donkdonk: i am quite sure there are people in this world who do have lpi certs
donkdonk
z00dax: i meant in this channel :)
Evolution
I know of at least 3 such certified people in this channel
and several more who are certifiable
Cobra
(Action) jumps up and down...
oh...wait...
Evolution
(Action) rests his case.
Cobra: :-P
donkdonk: the question becomes: Why are you asking?
Cobra
everyone needs a good sidekick for some jokes :P
donkdonk
Well i just passed the 101 and 102 exam and i was wondering if anyone took the level 2 or 3 exams
z00dax
I wont be surprised if some of the people involved with the tests / process itself - hang out here sometimes
donkdonk
Mostly I am wondering if it is worth the energy, as in do employers look for that?
z00dax
donkdonk: you should be talking to employers and recruiters etc. not here
donkdonk
or do i need a "big name" like a RHCE
lunk
any repository recommendations for installing mythtv?
Evolution
donkdonk: depends on the employer. as z00dax says... you're probably asking in the wrong forum
z00dax
lunk: check wiki.centos.org
Evolution
donkdonk: some employers demand proof of skill, rather than just a piece of paper
some want the paper itself.
donkdonk
z00dax: sorry i am not familiar with a #ceo channel ;)
lunk
z00dax: doh, zero results for mythtv
z00dax
if they wrote the Cert's out on softer paper - you could use it as toilet Paper emergency supply
Evolution
heh that's about how I feel about it.
my last employer wouldn't pay for certifications because they were a 'waste of resources'
which translates to "if you have a certification, you're not any smarter, we just have to pay you more now."
z00dax
lunk: look around, i see a link to myth-tv just fine
donkdonk
well i have some skill IMHO i just want to be able to market it better
Evolution
donkdonk: if you want a job a cert will help. If you want a *GOOD* job... they won't make a difference. reputation, and skill are more important.
lunk
z00dax: i'm so not seeing it
z00dax
lunk: too bad
lunk
thanks for the help sir.
donkdonk
Evolution: well i hear that. I am new to the field and looking at a jump start. just so long as no one says "man that was a big waste of time"
lunk
anybody else have any recommendations for a repository with mythtv? Avoiding teeth pulling would be super.
z00dax
all certs are a big waste of time :)
Evolution
lunk: I've got some pointers for it
z00dax
for the people doing them - on the other hand, they are a fantastic source of income for the trainers
Evolution
lunk: follow what z00dax said. :-P
lunk: mythtv is in the ATrpms repository. but that repository may cause problems with your system, and the packager for that repo doesn't seem to care so we don't support it here.
lunk
yea, that's the one i'm having trouble with
Evolution
if you use that repo, and it breaks your box... we'll just mock you if you cry about it.
LuvRedheads
heh
