MeiyoIsHONOR
Excuse me for dragging a horse again, what about 750MHz or 1GHz with 256 or 512ram
dtm
what about it
MeiyoIsHONOR
oh, for a raid 5 system?
dtm
what about it
MeiyoIsHONOR
I am trying to use the most minimum system for RAID 5 (IDE or SATA) and I am trying to figure out what size power supply, proc, and ram to have. Current the systems I have are 230MHz and 550Mhz.
I also have a Compaq server, but it must be used for something else.
dtm
why are you trying to use the most minimum?
just coz you need higher end systems on something else?
R
MeiyoIsHONOR: do you have a hardware raid card, or you're trying to do it in software?
MeiyoIsHONOR
low budget; I am trying to cap off at five or six thousand
dtm
it'd be fine for hardware or software raid, depending on whether you're beating on it with nfs

MeiyoIsHONOR
I want to buy a new card
dtm
the main reason to get a hardware raid card is not for the raid but for the separation of ide channels
MeiyoIsHONOR
even at 230MHz and 550Mhz with 128 or 256mb?
dtm
and possibly write-through cache
with battery
you need to state the application, sir
it's not like there's some level where the code will refuse to execute
R
MeiyoIsHONOR: If you're going super cheap .. why not just get some honking ide or stat drives and do raid 1
?
MeiyoIsHONOR: sorry I meant ide or sata drives.
dtm
yeah that's not only cheap but it uses fewer channels
which simplifies the use of !@%)! IDE
R
MeiyoIsHONOR: and you could even setup a hot spare
MeiyoIsHONOR: all on two ide channels
MeiyoIsHONOR
oh, sorry. I am setting up a samba server with anti-virus which has one to four users (most of the time one user). I will say I know little about RAID!!! though I am told RAID 5 is great for data integrety.
Are you suggesting software raid on ide?
R
MeiyoIsHONOR: at the level of utilization and hadware you have, a simple software raid 1 setup, with some fast sata drives, like 500G would be great
Sneaky_Bastard
I do not recommend software RAID at all
as it is a performance hit
get a real live hardware RAID controller
R
Sneaky_Bastard: a reasonable raid card will cost more than his server
Sneaky_Bastard
hmmm, Adaptec makes a USD $350 one for SATA
that is *not* "HostRAID"
R
Sneaky_Bastard: exactly.
Sneaky_Bastard: He's got a 230Mhz, or 550Mhz system to run it on
MeiyoIsHONOR
Oh, I should explain my ideal with the "low budget". I am willing to buy a new card and hdds, but why buy a new system if it is not needed.
not trying to be a cheap skate, I will buy what is needed
Sneaky_Bastard: do you know the model number?
dtm
Sneaky_Bastard: don't tell people that software raid is a performance hit. any of his CPUs are faster than any even remotely affordable hardware raid.
Sneaky_Bastard
MeiyoIsHONOR: I can dig it up for you
hang on
MeiyoIsHONOR
if you do not mind, thank you
Sneaky_Bastard
model 2420SA
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/sata/sata2raid/AAR-2420SA
we put one of those in a box at the datacenter
it seems to work pretty good
one of the really wild features
was we installed drives that had been built with Adaptec HostRAID
they were more or less out of order
dtm
MeiyoIsHONOR: you may need or want a motherboard bios update if your drives are > 137 GB
Sneaky_Bastard
and the controller automagically figured out which was which and it worked perfectly

dtm
MeiyoIsHONOR: that size requires lba48
MeiyoIsHONOR
okay
dtm
MeiyoIsHONOR: so, then with hardware raid you're not getting any performance difference in your given case and you're tied to a proprietary on-disk format. if you dont have a compatible card in the future and that card dies, you're gone
there is simply no reason for it.
and you'd also want to ensure that you can manage the raid while the system's booted, which is given with software raid and very specific hardware raids
including failure notification and just everything
MeiyoIsHONOR
Well, I need to leave. Thank you for the help and info.
bye
dtm
oh, that Meiyo. he truly was HONOR.

dan__t
hi
dtm
hi
dan__t
how goes it
dtm
it's ok! how bout yew
i'm not doing so well with learning selinux. i keep walking away and coming back and having gotten nowhere in days ;)
it's functional but not understandable at this point
dan__t
I'm wanting to make an RBL and DNSBL
I think that'd be a neato LAMP project
dtm
these do not exist?
dan__t
They do. However, I think it'd be neat to use for our systems at work.
dtm
and so why are you not using the existing one?
z00dax
dtm: look at dwalsh's blog - nice stuff there w.r.t selinux
dtm
z00dax: kthx
dan__t
I am. Like I said. I think it would make a neat LAMP project.
dtm
dan__t: oh. so i guess i missed something. you're not making something from scratch, then?
dan__t
That's what I'm hinting at.
dtm
what is? (that was a y/n question)
dan__t
Yes. I am hinting at making something from scratch.
(that was a y answer)
dtm
ok so far you've said that you're going to use something existing and you're going to make something from scratch, both to do the same thing.
dan__t
I never said I'd use an existing one, but thanks.
dtm
yeah, you did.
and... thanks for what?
dan__t
You asked if existing RBL and DNSBLs existed. I answered with "yes", because I'm sure that, well, they do exist.
dtm
i asked why you're not using the existing one and you said "i am"
dan__t
Well, you see, that's because I am using existing RBLs and DNSBLs
dtm
:-I
dan__t
emphasis on "am", "currently do", "will continue to use", and the like.
dtm
yes and you said that the thing you want to do is the same function
right?
dan__t
However, I am suggesting that assembling my own lists would be a neat project, utilizing MySQL and PHP hackery.
z00dax
dan__t: what sort of scalebility are you looking at ?
dan__t
I don't care. I just want a project.
dtm
dan__t's time is worthless
z00dax
do it in prolog with flat files then
dan__t
We push 8k messages/hr usually, I don't know if we'd ue it.
Sorry for wanting to learn, dtm. haha.
dtm
we know this, you say it all the time. but is your employer going to pay you to reinvent the wheel for no apparent reason on something you call "hackery"?
dan__t
For shame.
Yeap.
dtm
that is the question!
dan__t
And if they do not, and I ee myself learning more about the system as this project continues, I might get ballsy and work on it from home. How's that sound?
dtm
:-o
dan__t
Is that alright with you if I take on a project to learn a bit about it?
dtm
yeah, it's just not alright for you to project your emotional hystrionics onto me
dan__t
I'm not. For whatever reason you come off as an asshat. Maybe I just have a negative preception of you anyway.
dtm
you have a negative perception of yourself which you project.
it's sad and unjust to all
dan__t
I'll think about changing that. Once you're done taking jabs and stabs at people's questions, you're usually pretty informative.
z00dax
you guys want to cut this off ?
paulstuffins
Hi guys, I have been trying to install Apache on a fresh install of CentOS 4.3 yet I keep getting the error "error: rpmdb: damaged header #292 retrived -- skipping" in an endless loop. Any reason why this would happen on a fresh install?
dtm
i dont; just curious.
z00dax
take it to #centos-social if you care enough
dan__t
here we go again.
hah
New install does not necessarily mean everything works.
z00dax
paulstuffins: did you get any errors during the install ?
dan__t
I suppose I'd delete /var/lib/rpm/__db.00** and rpm --rebuilddb ?
paulstuffins
z00dax: no
z00dax
paulstuffins: something is definitely broken. as dan__t said, try that first
in /var/lib/rpm - get rid of all files that start with __ and rpm --rebuilddb
dan__t
yay i'm the winner.
z00dax
paulstuffins: also, have you installed anything from outside the distro that might mess with bdb ?
paulstuffins
only thing i have installed is vsftpd
z00dax
how ?
paulstuffins
yum
z00dax
right
did you do that rpm thing yet ?
dan__t
downloading message 1 of 6744
vegbox444
I just installed mysql-server what is teh root password
?
z00dax
vegbox444: think about it. what do you think it might be ?
vegbox444
blank?
or my actual root password
tried those didnt work
lol
tried changing it with mysqladmin -u root password hahahaha
z00dax
and mysql server is actually runnin ?
dan__t
what's the actual error
z00dax
s/n ?/ng /
paulstuffins
huh dan__t?
vegbox444
yeah
its running
dan__t
not you, paulstuffins.
vegbox444, again, how about the actual error?
vegbox444
says access deneid for root @ localhost
dan__t
ok.
