Zerberus
saslv2
nevele
perfect.. thanks
so_
someone was asking about this earlier, but what file do I change to change device node ownerships, ie I wan't /dev/modem to be root, lock instead of root, uucp
Zerberus
/etc/security/console.perms
so_
hmmm added some entried but it didn't work to set the perms
Evolution
so_: some things may require entries/rules in /etc/udev/ also.
so_
ah yes, in 50-udev seems to be the culprit
<not something I have to do every day>
BliZZardX
is it possible to setup x with only ssh access?
so then i could vnc into it after
i don't know where to start
quiet
is there any kind of backport repo for things like openoffice 2 and firefox 1.5 ??
i've got both freshrpms and karan, but neither of those have OOo2 or FF1.5

seanos
centosplus has firefox1.5
quiet
ahh... i saw that in the repo list... thanks.
do you know if ti has oo2?
seanos
doubt it.
quiet
ok
thanks.
do i just uncomment the centosplus from /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources?
yum won't see it then, right?
use up2date?
seanos
yum will...
yum --enablerepo=centosplus install firefox
unless you've screwed around with things...
quiet
no
ok
BliZZardX
is there a way to have vnc run it's own x display?
quiet
you don't need an x server to run a vnc server... afaik.
BliZZardX
there's another way to control the gui?
quiet
~/.vnc/xstartup (or something like that) controls what WM/DE you load...
i guess i don't understand exactly what you're asking?
BliZZardX
sec
[23:59:10] <BliZZardX> is it possible to setup x with only ssh access?
[23:59:19] <BliZZardX> so then i could vnc into it after
[23:59:23] <BliZZardX> i don't know where to start
Evolution
BliZZardX: don't paste in here please.
quiet
how to start the vncserver?
mmcgrath
vncserver
BliZZardX
he wasn't here evo
yeah it says, vncserver: couldn't find "xauth" on your PATH.
Evolution
BliZZardX: I don't care. the topic is quite clear about the rules.
mmcgrath
then xauth isn't in your path
Evolution
BliZZardX: so install the xauth package.
LuvRedheads
and you have been told a few times before not to paste in the channel
quiet
hrm... how do I specify which version to install of something?? for example... karan and freshrpms both have irssi, though slightly diff. versions..

Evolution
quiet: ideally you'd use include/exclude statements per repository.
so_
Evolution, thanks evo, udev did the trick
BliZZardX
quiet may i pm you?
Evolution
but you can tell yum to install specific versions.
so_: cool. glad it worked.
quiet
BliZZardX: i don't mind.
aitrus
it's been pretty quiet in here for the past couple days
hmm
how do i do stuff?
you know, that thing
Dyson
what?
it was quiet?
where?
aitrus
wha?!?
who said that?
yukstah
If i wanted to allow a specific host access to snmp on my machine...what do i need?
the following doesnt seem to work:-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 161 -j ACCEPT -s 69.x.x.x
Dyson
yukstah: snmp is udp, not tcp
yukstah
ahhh
that did t..thx :)
any idea what I need to snmp network/processor usage on myu centos box?
anyone?
Dyson
yukstah: net-snmp and cacti for example
yukstah
hm
im using cacti now
Dyson
yukstah: i.e. net-snmp for the snmpd and cacti for graphing
yukstah
thanks
i jus tneeded to know the deamon
Dyson
(Action) doesn't support snmpd after 03:00 CEST
:)
yukstah
for some reason cacti is letting me snmp the hdd's
but not eth0
Dyson
yukstah: cacti is a maintenance-nightmare :)
yukstah
lol
whys that
mmcgrath
Dyson: huh?
Dyson
yukstah: did you actually try to reconfigure something?
yukstah: or did you try to read the docs (which aren't very complete)
yukstah
nope
do i need to?
i added the interface
Dyson
yukstah: and maybe you might be afraid of using php to do snmp queries
yukstah
whys that
Dyson
yukstah: and finally: if you try to relocate it to a different directory or host it will break completely, because too much stuff is copied from the base-config to the database
yukstah
lol
im just playing basic..,very basic
i want to know network usage
mmcgrath
yukstah: actually cacti's pretty easy to use.
If you just want to monitor CPU load on centos make sure Net-SNMP is installed and use that template. CPU load is build into the net-snmp host template
yukstah
what about monitoring network
eth0
mmcgrath
Included
in the template
yukstah
so i create a host
well a "device"
mmcgrath
create a device. Make sure you fill the info out right.
yukstah
what host template?
mmcgrath
click ok. Then on the very next screen click on the link at the top that says "Create graphs for this host"
net-snmp host
yukstah
ucd/net snmp host?
mmcgrath
yes
if you've filled it out right. the system info should get printed in the top left of the screen when you add the host
Then just "create graphs for this host"
yukstah
yeah
snmp error
hm
snmpd is running
firewall is off
mmcgrath
A) firewall B) net-snmp isn't running/configured C) fat fingered.
yukstah
do i need to configure net-snmp?
mmcgrath
yes. You'll have to set your community string.
If this machine is accessable from the internet then stop what you're doing right now and read about what you're getting yourself into.
yukstah
ah yes. i assumed it was public
its not
mmcgrath
k, beyond that there's always #cacti
you can test your host with this:
yukstah
where is the snmp config?
mmcgrath
snmpwalk -v2c -c [INSERT YOUR COMMUNITY STRING] -Of 10.0.0.yourip .iso
/etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
yukstah
defaulyt is public
bronze
hmm - says here: http://www.linux-ntfs.org/content/view/120/59/ that RHEL 4 has full NTFS r/w support. Anyone tried it on Centos?
mmcgrath
bronze: no it says there that you can download an RPM to get NTFS support to work in RHEL 4.
bronze
mmcgrath: Correct. "They" have full NTFS r/w Suipport for RHEL4
yukstah
mccrath -= thx
that test worked
bronze
Sorry if I gave the wrong impression. (They is linux-ntfs.org)
mmcgrath
yukstah: solid
bronze: I've honestly never once had issues using NTFS on any OS I've ever used.
Though I shy away from it because its a crappy file system.
bronze
Has anyone tried the linux-ntfs.org on Centos?
mmcgrath: You written to an NTFS fiile system from(mounted on) a Linux system
mmcgrath
Yes.
bronze
which Lin?
Centos?
mmcgrath
Now adays the only times I ever run into it is when I use one of the many rescue CD's.
bronze
heh :)
mmcgrath
just set it up, if it doesn't work don't use it :-D
yukstah
i only have udc/net cpu, load, and memory usage...
bronze
mmcgrath: I'm hoping to piggyback a litle on other's experiences in terms of long term stable experiences.
mmcgrath
no eth0
yukstah
nope
mmcgrath
k, click on your device.
yukstah
ok..
mmcgrath
click on create graphs for this host again
yukstah
