hali
hughesjr: how's the progress with the Centos port to the t2000?
hughesjr
working on it as we speak ... :)
hali
hughesjr: cool, it's booting at least?
i presume you dropped the 2.6.9 back porting :)
hughesjr
I have a booting kernel ... no 2.6.9 :)
hali
im sure it will work much better than aurora :)
dan__t
hi, hughesjr.
hughesjr
hali: aurora is pretty good too ... they have good stuff there

hali
hughesjr: i haven't tried it since 1.98(?) and it had a few random gotchas
dan__t
I want to install a transparent bridge here at work, to monitor traffic.
hali
2.0 is probably much better
dan__t
hrm hrm hrm.
hughesjr
hi dan__t
dan__t
How goes it
So what are my options for monitoring traffic on a transparent bridge?
I've never done this before, actually.
hughesjr
I did do that a long time ago with an addon for snort
smooge
(Action) keeps blinking
dan__t
That's what I was thinking heh
smooge
(Action) realizes he is reading a question from a couple of hours ago
dan__t
I need passive monitoring
smooge
(Action) catches up
dan__t: i did it a short time ago (1.5 years ago) on a Debian box
I think... it was just "tcpdump -i <name_of_bridge>
snort will do it with an addon
dan__t
heh
rad
diowork
i have a pkg that wants the i386 version of openssl to satisfy deps but i have the x86_64 version installed and it wont install the i386 one because of a file conflict, is there a way around this?
fets
--force ;-/
dan__t
heh
diowork
didnt think yum had a force option
error: no such option: --force
dan__t
I've been at work for 30 hrs
i think i go home now.
denver1
hey can i install programs like amarok, kino, digikam etc. in centos?
so_
denver1, some of that stuff is probably part of kde, otherwise I'd look at the kde-redhat project

denver1
could i add some extra repositories to be able to access them?
Zerberus
http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories
denver1
thanks
sandra78
hi does anyone know how to make a script to send ping and check if a server is available and if not send a msg?
Dyson_
sandra78: nagios :p
patrickj2
Hi. i'm using a Radeon 9200 Pro and I can't get anything more than 800 x 600 . Any suggestions?
so_
patrickj2, monitor settings?
patrickj2
800 x 600 is the highest resolution listed
so_
yes for your selected monitor type
what does it say in the Hardware tab of the system-config-display
patrickj2
how would I access that
so_
how are you seeing the resolution settings?
patrickj2
i have a window visible called configure display, in kde,
so_
try running system-config-display and see if it's the same program
http://www.centos.org/docs/4/html/rhel-sag-en-4/ch-xconfig.html#S1-XCONFIG-DISPLAY
patrickj2
ok
so_
that should give you enough information about fixing it, if you read through those pages
I suspect you just have Generic Monitor or something selected that isn't allowed to go beyond 800x600
it could be a driver issue, but I believe that the 9200 series is supported, otherwise you're on your own with ATI's drivers and support
patrickj2
i think it is a driver issue, the monitor was recognized. Thanks.
sandra78
help!!!
so_
fire!!!
sandra78
how can i do a script to send ping menssages each 20min and if not receive reply send me a email? i think to use de cron but i don't know how to send a receive the ping answer notification
so_
try mon, or nagios or that sort of thing, or if you like you could probably write a script with ping and grep that removes valid responses from the output
patrickj2
nagios
so_
I think I did some small shell script with fping one time too
sandra78
yeah i want to monitor my hosted server from another server if my primary server go down i can receive a sms msg trought a sms gateway
patrickj2
nagios does all that
sandra78
i was thinking to use asterisk but if there is another solution
would be better
nagios
thanks
i will check
flippyhe1d
does centOS not come with a c compiler?
daMaestro
gcc?
flippyhe1d
yeah I have a default install over at Crystal Tech and there is NO c compiler!
seems weird
daMaestro
a default install would not have the devel tools afaik
flippyhe1d, use 'yum' to install what you need
flippyhe1d
so actually, I am new to CentOS ... it seems cool, I come from redhat ... whats so special about centos anyhow?
NthDegree_
it is RHEL AS with enhancements
you can run a kernel that supports filesystems that the default RHEL does not for instance
flippyhe1d
thats cool
now i see it comes with mysql 4.1 ... can I use yum to upgrade this automatically?
NthDegree_
not sure, I use CentOS as a desktop OS :)
you may want to install yumex
Dysk
flippyhe1d, yum makes minor security updates but not major ones.
NthDegree_
that is a graphical frontend for yum
Dysk
To go up to mysql 5 you'll need to use the rpms on mysql's website.
NthDegree_
not necessarily
Dysk
Is there a mysql 5 centos rpm handy, NthDegree_?
NthDegree_
just because something isn't in updates doesn't mean it isn't there
flippyhe1d
so I need to look for rpm's for centos specifically?
NthDegree_
no you can use RHEL ones
Dysk
RHEL ones work too.
That's the whole point of centos is that it's compatible with rhel rpms
NthDegree_
for CentOS 4 you use RHEL 4 ones for it for 3 RHEL 3 for 5 RHEL 5..........................
BlackHand
mysql 5, postgresql 5, ruby 1.8 (required for rails) are in the testing centos repo
php 5.0.x are in centosplus repo
s/postgresql 5/postgresql 8.1
Evolution
postgres 5? we going back in time again?
BlackHand: you leave that time machine ALONE dammit
:-P
BlackHand
heh
Evil2U
I'm trying to update my nvidia drivers and I'm having troubles keeping X server Killed I'm runing centos 4 and suggestions?
aitrus

Evil2U

Just wanted to say thanks for the help guys :)
azurestroke
Hello, I have a question - Anyone here that is expirienced mind answering? :)
aitrus
just ask your question
don't ask to ask
Seaweed
Gasp, Alright
I searched google and came upon a site that had free CentOS books. I downloaded one and opened it, it said Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 at the top. Is CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 the same thing?
aitrus
pretty much
CentOS is RHEL built from source
with some additional community stuff available
Seaweed
Ah alright, so the books should pretty much be reliable
aitrus
i can't speak for something i know nothing about
was this book written by someone intelligent or a monkey?
Seaweed
lol
http://www.linux-books.us/centos.php
Its Copyright Redhat, assuming they wrote them
aitrus
yeah, those are replications of the docs from the redhat website
which are also on the centos website
Seaweed
Ah hehe
Thanks
trung
hi
with squid, when i set http_port ip_of_eth1:3128 it can't start
(i have two nics)
any idea?
aitrus
typically an error message helps
trung
hi aitrus
aitrus
hahah
trung
20 mins?
i think , mirc is free now
aitrus
so, about that error message
trung
aitrus: where get error?
aitrus
the logs
/var/log/messages
squid might have its own log, can't remember
Seaweed
i386 is the version for intel processors correct?
aitrus
uh
well
that's the generic for 32-bit intel/amd procs
Seaweed
Well I have a server with 2 PIII's, so out of the list http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/4/isos/ That would be the primary choice?
aitrus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I686
i386
the i686 kernel will be installed though
which is correct
trung
aitrus:
Seaweed
Ah so with downloading the i386, it will just update to the better kernel for the cpu?
trung
it works
