To make those changes, do I just type those as commands?
Or do I add them to /etc/sysctl.conf?
Or either one?
hughesjr
that is formated as sysctl.conf entries
Evolution
drop that in sysct.conf (some of that is already in there)
and then do sysctl -p
which will read it in and make it active
funzone
off to break laptop...will no doubt be back later...

EriSanHome
hi all, i'm not an experienced used and would like to get some help with permissions, anyone up to it?
hughesjr
EriSanHome: what do you need?
EriSanHome
i'm trying to execute a command as non root user, and that asks me for a password, gave it the root pwd, but it's not accepting that
the non root user has no password, so tried also pressing just enter, but nada
hughesjr
hmmm
EriSanHome
how can i change the owner of the command?
hughesjr
well ... files have owners ...
what is the command
EriSanHome
the command is digitemp (to read out 1wire temp sensors)
AndyUK
hi, silly queston but is tightvnc available as an rpm ?
EriSanHome
how do i give a user permission to access /dev/ttyS0 ?
range
Add him to the correct group.
AndyUK
Sorry to aski silly q's but I;m a noob to EntLinux distros, is centos4.3 comaptable with any RHEL4 rpms by vitue of it being built from the EL4 srcs ?
sid
I made changes to /etc/sysctl.conf (with vi) and then did "sysctl -p" and it didn't seem to have any affect...did I do it wrong?
Here are my changes, http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/46o92f76.html

centos 4.3 + adaptec 2400 ATA raid card = it works
?
oh dear.. a bit terse.. i have an Adaptec 2400 on a system that i was going to migrate to centos 4.3 tomorrow.. and i have just had this awful thought that like the lsi card i have in another system it will not work... oh well only one way to try.
paulstuffins
hey guys would the vnc viewer from http://www.vnc.com work on cent os or is there one i can get via yum?
range
Have you tried?
To get one via yum, I mean?
paulstuffins
not yet no
range
Why not?
paulstuffins
didnt know if it would be listed as vnc or something obscure
range
Maybe time to read the yum documentation ...

paulstuffins
i wouldnt have thought the yum documentation would tell you all the packages and the names
range
No, but it will tell you how to find out if some package provides something.
paulstuffins
a search will tell you that
range
<http://www.centos.org/docs/4/> contains some pretty in depth documentation about yum
And yes, there is a package containing a vnc viewer for centos. It's in the base repository.
paulstuffins
found one via yum and ta for the link ill go have a look at that now :D
eger
i need some software raid advice, anyone around?
gerardocb
what u need, eger?
eger
should i create 3 software raid partitions on each drive and create /boot, swap, and / each mirror
or should i create 1 raid partition on each drive using all the space
make that raid mirror an LVM
then create my /boot swap and / in the LVM
or am i out of my mind
gerardocb
I prefer the first one way
eger
yea thats how i started doing it, then it seemed i could get slightly simpler with just one raid1 device
and making it an LVM
maybe it really doesnt make that big of enta diff in a software raid environ
ah i guess i have to do it the first way, bootable partitions cant be on a LVM
gerardocb
hehe
that's a good point...
BTW, I think it won't boot the first time
until you install grub on the second raid partition
eger
oh really?
u mean if the first drive fails i prolly gotta fix the MBR on the second for it to boot grub?
gerardocb
well... boot *will* fail...
after install, you need to boot on rescue mode and install grub on the second disk
eger
hmmm
gerardocb
probably, u can do it before install reboots...
eger
its rebooting now, just finished
hmm...its booting without installing grub on second drive
gerardocb
hehe
well...
it never worked for me... :S

has anyone upgraded from fedora 4 -> centos?
thinkloop
whats so special about centos compared to say slackware or ubuntu?
f13
thinkloop: its based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, so thats the real question. Whats special about RHEL vs slackware or ubuntu

when i get to file ipw3945-kmod-common-0.0.73-1.nodist.rf.noarch.rpm i get the following errors
kmod-ipw3945 = 0.0.73 is needed by ipw3945-kmod-common-0.0.73-1.nodist.rf.noarch
what am i missing here?
f13
funzone: you don't have the rpm kmod-ipw3945 installed.
funzone
i have been looking high an low for that and cannot find it.....
that is what i was thinking
f13
well, where did you get the ipw3945-kmod-common-0.0.73-1.nodist.rf.noarch.rpm package?
funzone
from dags site
f13
did you look there for the matching kmod package?
funzone
done that been there.....searched his site...
have all three from his site....
f13
all three what?
funzone
ipw3945-firmware ipw3945d ipw3945-kmod-common

SRoTC
Hi Guys... Im a newb (contain ur laughter), ive just installed CentOS 4 and i cant get network connectivity (i think), i can ping my router but no other addresses, whats wrong?
dtm
SRoTC: do you have a dns set properly in /etc/resolv.conf and do you have a default gateway when you type '/sbin/route'
"nameserver" entry in resolv.conf
SRoTC: can you ping an ip address such as 64.233.187.99
funzone
sounds like a gateway problem
.
(Action) feels like screaming head off..............................

:-I
funzone
no :-O
i have a touch pad on this laptop and it is driving me nuts when i am using linux

i've got an interesting question, I have 2 Sata cards , they are slotted into 2 PCI slots, How do I know which one is sda, sdb, etc?
hologram
are there different model/size hd's hooked into each card?

my centos 4.3 nfs server suddenly can't be mounted by a linux host that always could mount it before. no firewalls on either one, connected by a 100Mbps switch. the server's /var/log/messages says the request was authenticated and then the client says RPC: Timed out. portmap is running on both and nfslock/nfs are running on the server. tcpdump shows the traffic getting through. any ideas?
lunk
look at dmesg for failed DMA requests
could be the drive died
dtm
no errors in dmesg
hologram
tried restarting the nfs and/or portmap daemons?
dtm
hologram: yessir
on both hosts

dtm: retrace your steps.. some aspect of either system must have been modified at some time

Eureka: 'hdparm -I' gives full info so perhaps you can correlate the serial numbers. or unplug one and see which one remainsa t the bios screen.
hologram: no they haven't really. i moved em across the country and changed the ip addresses.
hologram: sounds like the server won't respond to the client.
but pinging works in both ways
hologram
other tcp/ip traffic communicates alright?
k
dtm
yeah. and ssh.
so we are full duplex and such
davidj
Anyone here good with qmail?
dtm
tcpdump on the server sees the rpc traffic and /var/log///messaegs indicates that the request was successful.
hologram
you portscanned the server to verify the daemon port is available?
hm
dtm
yeah tcp 111 and 2049 are open
hologram: exportfs successfully reports it ont he server
i'll do a stop and a start rather than just a restart.
hologram
hm
dtm
^piggy^: do you use ecomstation?
^piggy^
dtm: yeah, but in my defense i am a linux admin. :P
dtm

^piggy^
from my hostnames i obviously host ecomstation.org here at home
